Guidelines to Write a Lab Report

1. Cover page: The cover page must include Title (Chapter title as shown in lab
manual/lab sheet), group name, and particulars of members such as matric card
number and IC.
2. Introduction: This should include brief comments of the importance of technique(s)
used or function(s) of the practical. If a new technique or instrumental method is
introduced, give a brief discussion about the method or theory behind the experiment.
3. Objective(s): This should include statements on why the practical was performed. To
prepare the statement, ask yourself,
a. What are the goals of this experiment?
b. Why you are doing the experiments?
c. What will you get at the end of the experiments?
4. Experimental/ Materials and Methods: The details should be including chemicals
and equipments used and how the experiments were conducted. Data and observations
should be recorded in your notebook as you proceed through the experiments.
5. Results: This should include all data presented in organized formats such as table(s)
and graph(s). Assign numbers and titles for your table and graph.
6. Discussion: This section allows you to discuss and explain results that you obtained.
Results section should be emphasized. Students may make plausible hypothesis to the
results obtained and may speculate the failure to obtain certain results with references
to support your hypothesis.
7. References: students should cite facts or data from sources outside of the manual or
class notes. Two references (at least) should be consulted and cited including books,
research papers, review articles and websites. Citations and listing of references
should follow the format of a thesis.
