Assignment No. 01 (Unit-I)

1. (a) Discuss the significance and scope of Operations Research in modern management.
(b) A post office requires different numbers of full-time employees on different days of the week. The number
of full-time employees required on each day is given in Table 1. Union rules state that each full-time employee
must work five consecutive days and then receive two days off. For example, an employee who works Monday
to Friday must be off on Saturday and Sunday. The post office wants to meet its daily requirements using only
fulltime employees. Formulate an LP that the post office can use to minimize the number of full-time
employees who must be hired.

2. (a) Write a short note on the applications of LPP.
(b) RTU plans to admit students of Engineering Science stream (called stream A) and management-Humanities
stream (called Stream B). These are to be admitted from among the candidates who have passed Higher
Secondary examination. The Institute has stations to interview candidates at Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. The
candidates called for interview have passed higher secondary examination mainly from Central Board, West
Bengal Board and Tamil Nadu Board. The students have also been called for interview from other Boards.

It is assumed that all candidates called for interview appear before interview board. It is decided to form the
stream A and B according to the following specifications.
A Should Contain:
At least 50% from Central Board.
At most 50% from Tamil Nadu Board.
At most 30% from other Boards.
B Should Contain:
At least 70% from Central Board.
At most 50% from West Bengal Board.
Between 40% to 60% from other Boards.
The students admitted to stream A and Stream B have to pay Rs. 300/- and Rs. 200 respectively as admission
fee. Formulate a LPP which makes best use of available information.
3. (a) Estate Department has purchased sufficient amount of curtain cloth to meet the current requirement of the
institute. The curtain cloth is in pieces, each of length 14 feet. The curtain cloth is in pieces, each of length 14
feet. The curtain requirement is given in table 3.

(b) A firm manufacturing three products A, B and C. Time to manufacture product A is twice that for B and
thrice that for C and they are to be produced in the ratio 3: 4: 5. The relevant data is given in Table 4. If the
whole labour is engaged in manufacturing product A, 1600 units of this product can be produced. There is
demand for at least 300, 250 and 200 units of product A, B and C and the profit earned per unit is Rs. 50, Rs. 40
and Rs. 70 respectively. Formulate the problem as a linear programming problem.

JVVNL has three electric power plants that supply the needs of four cities. Each power plant can supply the
following numbers of kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity: plant 1 35 million; plant 250 million; plant 3
40 million (see Table 3). The peak power demands in these cities, which occur at the same time (2 P.M.), are as
follows (in kwh): city 145 million; city 220 million; city 330 million; city 430 million. The costs of
sending 1 million kwh of electricity from plant to city depend on the distance the electricity must travel. Find
the Optimum minimum cost of meeting each citys peak power demand.

A Bearing company has four manufacturing plants and five warehouses. Each plant manufactures the same
product, which is sold at different prices at each warehouse area. The cost of manufacturing and cost of raw
materials are different in each plant due to various factors. The capacities of the plants are also different. These
data are given in the table 6:

(ii) Find the solution using VAM method.
9. An airline that operates seven days a week has a timetable given below. Crews must have minimum layover
time of 6 hours between flights. Obtain the pairing of flights that minimizes layover time away from home. For
any given pairing the crew will be based at the city that results in the smaller layover. For each pair also
mention the city where the crew should be placed.

10. Solve the traveling salesman problem by using the data given below:
C12 = 20, C13 = 4, C14 = 10, C23 = 5, C34 = 6, C25 = 10, C35 = 6, C45 = 20 and Cij = Cji . And there is no route
between cities 'i' and 'j' if a value for Cij is not given in the statement of the problem. (i and j are = 1,2,..5)
