Biography

Mr Fernando Zapico, Spanish Education Advisor, Embassy of Spain in The Philippines


Mr Fernando Zapico obtained his Master in Linguistics and English Studies at the Universidad de Oviedo, Spain and also
holds a Postgraduate Degree on Geographic Linguistics of Spanish from the Universidad de La Rioja and a Diploma on
CLIL from Nottingham University. Mr Zapico has worked as an English teacher, teacher trainer, foreign language advisor
and Head of Plurilingualism at the Department of Education in Asturias. Since 2012 he has been the Education Advisor at
the Embassy of Spain in Manila, Philippines. Mr Zapico has published numerous articles and materials related to bilingual
teaching and evaluation.
Dr Leonel Alvarado, Senior Lecturer in Spanish, University of New England NSW & Massey University of New Zealand
Dr Leonel Alvarado coordinates the Spanish programs at Massey University of New Zealand and the University of New
England, NSW. Dr Alvarado teaches Latin American literature, travel writing, music and politics and has published several
award-winning books of poetry and criticism. Dr Alvarados current research is on music, nationalism and identity in Central
America.
Mr Howard Jacobs, Inspector, Languages, Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW
Mr Howard Jacobs has had extensive experience teaching German in primary, secondary and tertiary contexts. From 1992 1997 Mr Jacobs worked for the then Department of Education and Training delivering a range of professional development
programs to languages teachers. Since 1998 Mr Jacobs has worked at the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational
Standards NSW developing Languages HSC examinations and is currently Inspector, Languages.
Ms Gregoria Lopez, Academic Coordinator, Instituto Cervantes Sydney
Ms Gregoria Lopez has extensive experience working as a Spanish language teacher in Australia and overseas. Ms Lopez
has published several press articles about how to teach Spanish as a Foreign Language and is co-author of the Manual
Practica la Expresion Oral A2/B1. Ms Lopez is reponsible for the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) which
trains teachers as examiners in Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Jess Bergas Paz, Head of International Studies, Indooroopilly State High School, Queensland
Mr Jess Bergas Paz is currently the Head of International Studies at Indooroopilly State High School in Brisbane,
Queensland. Mr Bergas Paz has been teaching Spanish in Australia for 12 years. He was previously a journalist in Spain
across different media networks (radio & TV). Mr Bergas Paz was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, and
the MLTAQ Language Teachers 2009 AWARD Involvement in Languages Education in Queensland for making an
outstanding contribution to the profession. He is also the IB Coordinator, Chair Panel for Languages in Queensland and
also mentors pre-service teachers at the University of Queensland. Mr Bergas Paz has developed the only Spanish
immersion program in Australia, and has also been part of several research projects on Content & Language Integrated
Learning (CLIL). A recent publication is Languages, cultural capital and school choice: distinction and second language
immersion programmes. Smala, Simone and Paz, Jesus Bergas and Lingard, Bob (2013).
Ms Anna Pallares, Teacher of Spanish and Music, Wentworth College, New Zealand
Ms Anna Pallares has a Degree in Psychology, as well as a Diploma in Piano from the Conservatory of Music in Barcelona,
where she studied for ten years. Ms Pallares graduated from Massey University as a teacher, specializing in languages and
music. Her experience for over twenty years has been teaching Spanish to children, youth and adults, often using music and
rhythm in her classes. Since 2003 she has worked as a teacher of Spanish and piano at Wentworth College. Ms Pallares
also runs Linguamusic, offering piano and Spanish private tuition.
Ms Heidy Hernndez, Spanish IB Tutor at Queenwood School for Girls, NSW
Ms Heidy Hernndez has been a Spanish Language teacher for 12 years, teaching both the HSC and the IB program. Ms
Hernndez has participated in projects with BOSTES and has been part of the HSC marking team.
Dr Celina Bortolotto, Lecturer in Spanish, University of New England NSW & Massey University of New Zealand
Dr Celina Bortolotto is a Lecturer in Spanish at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, and Lecturer in Spanish at
Massey University of New Zealand where she teaches Spanish language, phonetics, and translation. Dr Bortolottos
research focuses on the interrelation between cultural values and individual emotions as it is represented in literary fiction.
