Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true
God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with
the Father, Through him all things were made. For us men and
for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of
the Holy Spirit he was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became
man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he
suffered, died and was buried and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come
again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his
kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
Who with the Father and the Son he is adored and glorified.
Who has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy
catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. I look forward to the resurrection of the
dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
HOLY:
Let all that is within me cry holy. Let all that is within me cry
holy. Holy, holy, holy is the lamb that was slain.
Let all that is within me cry Jesus. Let all that is within me
cry Jesus. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the lamb that was slain.
Let all that is within me cry mighty. Let all that is within me
cry mighty. Mighty, mighty, mighty is the lamb that was
slain.
HOLY COMMUNION
Father I have sinned, help me find my way. Remember not
my sins, just let me hear you say:
*I forgive. I love you. You are mine. Take my hand. Go in
peace, sin no more, beloved one.
Father I have loved, if thats the word you use. Ive played
so many games, thats left me so confused. (*)
Father, I have returned. Im here with you to stay. Im
standing at your door, hoping that youll say: (*)

REFLECTION
Jesus uses stark language today to make a point. There is no putting
off decisions we must make and changes we have not yet gotten
around to. Its not about later, its about now. We must carefully think out
and weigh decisions: how are we to respond to Jesus today? What is
very clear from the gospel is that it costs to serve completely and
utterly this Christ we call Lord. My mother would say, No ifs and no
buts. One thing is for sure, as followers of Christ we cant coast. We
certainly cant say we live in a Christian country and just go along
with our government and societys values. Jesus says we have to
consider to what nation and family we belong. We are members of his
family and citizens of the kingdom of God. At this meal we come
forward once again to claim our allegiance to Jesus and in the
Eucharist recommit ourselves to his way. Jesus is asking new followers
and long-time Christians for careful consideration. We cant be nave in
our commitment to him; cant run on cruise control. Our priorities must
be grounded in him and if they are, sacrifice will be asked of us. I was
tempted to say may be asked of us. But there is no doubt what Jesus
is asking of his followers, that sacrifice will be asked of us. Make that
the present tense: is being asked of us.
Isnt that why we gather here, because we need food and drink to stay
on the journey with Jesus to Jerusalem? Theres always a danger of
compromise, or giving up on the journey. From what Jesus says today
discipleship will require us to make difficult choices about: a life
partner; how we are to use our resources; our career choice;
responding to Jesuss call to serve the poor, etc. Following Jesus is not
about what will be asked of us, but what is being asked of us right now;
living our commitment to Christ fully this day. We need food for this
journey. That is what Jesus gives us today, here and now, present
tense, nothing less than his whole self. Today, we are still surprised at
how those fishermen were capable of leaving everything behind, their
job, their families, to follow Jesus (They brought their boats to land
and followed him, leaving everything: Lk 5:11), precisely when He
manifested himself before them as an exceptional collaborator for the
business which they lived from. If Jesus of Nazareth would make the
same proposal to us, in our 21st century..., would we have as much
courage as those other men had?; should we be able to sense which is
the true gain for us? The demand that Jesus laid on the shoulders of
his would be disciples minimal when compared with the complete
fulfilment that he is willing to offer to those who can accept his call and
invitation.
We Christians believe that Christ is ever present; this resurrected
Christ, therefore, requests us, not only to Peter, John or James, but to
George, Joe, Paula, and all of us who accept him as our Lord, that we
accept him from Luke's text in the boat of our life for He wants to
rest by our side; He requests us to let him make use of us, to allow him
to show us where He wants to guide our existence to, so we can
become productive amid a society which every day is more far away
and in need of God's Good News. The proposal is quite attractive, we
need only to know how are we, and if we really wish, to manage to get
rid of our fears, of our worries about what people may say or think
and set a course for deeper waters, or what is equivalent, to horizons
which may be farther away than those restricting our quotidian
mediocrity of anguish and disappointments. He who stumbles on his
way, no matter how little he moves forward, always gets somewhat
closer to the end of his journey; but he who runs out of his way, the
more he runs the farther he gets from the end of his trip (St. Thomas
Aquinas).
For the Synod: The theme of our Synod is: The Family in the context of
the New Evangelization and our Topic for this month is: Marriage in
the mind of the Church While the Church honours and recognizes the
importance of a husband and a wife as the foundation on which
Christian family is built upon, Jesus words in todays Scripture
challenges that very basis. The cost of following Jesus is everything of
ourselves, because Jesus desires to redeem everything of ourselves. It
means preferring to be like Jesus, Gods Son and inheriting the
kingdom which is within you (17:21) rather than having anything else.
For, as Jesus says, what does it profit a man if he gains the whole
world but loses or forfeits himself? (9:25). We cannot replace the
primordial place of the first commandment of Love. We must love God
first and the rest will work out naturally.
