ELE846: Power Systems Protection and Control

Course Description:
Brief introduction of the power systems topics covered in ELE746. Topics in this course will include
Symmetrical components; Unsymmetrical Faults, single line-to-Ground fault, Line-to-Line Fault and Double
line-to-Ground Fault; power system protection, instrument transformers, Overcurrent relays, Radial line
protection, Reclosers and fuses, Directional Relays, Zones of Protection, Impedance relays, Differential
protection, pilot and digital relaying; Power system Controls, Generator-Voltage Control, Turbine-Governor
Control, Load-Frequency Control, and economic dispatch; power system stability, Swing equation, Equal-area
Criterion, Numerical Integration of the Swing Equation, and methods of improving swing equation.. Students
will be using ETAP for assigned projects.
Learning
Objectives :

At the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:
1. Use the specialized core knowledge of electrical machines learnt in the previous Energy
Conversion and power system courses (ELE637and ELE746) on Transformers,
Generators, and per unit systems to apply in power system network calculations (1d).
a.
b.

Assessment Method: Directly assessed in scores in tutorial quizzes.

Assessment Measure: Students are given rubric (marking guide) ahead of time.

2. Compares model predictions with real world equipment (2b)

a. Assessment Method: Directly assessed in scores during tutorial quizzes and
midterm exam.
b. Assessment Measure: Students are given rubric (marking guide) ahead of time.
The rubric is used to mark them.
3. Creates predictions of outcomes and justifies the assumptions made in calculating power flow in a
transmission line, when all the information are not given explicitly (3d).
a. Assessment Method: Directly assessed in scores in written project report.
b. Assessment Measure: Student is expected to follow template and rubric (i.e.
marking guide) given in the project assignment.
4. Generates solutions for choice of protective CTs, and settings of protective relays for coordinations. (4d).
a. Assessment Method: Directly assessed in scores in midterm, final exam, and
project written reports.
b. Assessment Measure: Students are given marking schemes in the exam questions
and rubric (marking guide) for projects ahead of time in the assignment.
5. Contributes to team work in an equitable and timely manner (8a).
a. Assessment Method: Indirectly assessed in scores as a component in marking the
projects which involve team work.
b. Assessment Measure: Students are given guidelines to work in a group and produce
reports on short circuit studies, protection relay settings, and stability studies.
