START COUNTERMAINTENANCE PRACTICES

Replacement (See Figure 201 or 202, 742001.)

Start Counter. In the event of malfunction of the start counter, replace as follows:

Removal
(1)

Remove the start counter leads from the exciter.

(2)

Remove two nuts and washers that retain the start counter to the gearbox web. Remove
the counter.

Installation
(1)

Install a serviceable starter counter. Retain with two washers and nuts; tighten to 58 lb in.
(0.560.90 N.m).

(2)

Connect leads as described in para 1.B., 741001.

(3)

Record the number of accumulated starts from the old counter in the engine log.
NOTE:

Refer to Adjustments for Invalid Start Counter Readings, para 11.F., 720000,
EngineDescription and Operation, for the procedure to be used when the
cycles recorded on the start counter are known to be incorrect.

Alternate to Replacement
A.

An alternate procedure may be used in the event of start counter malfunction. Counter replacement is not necessary, provided:
(1)

The counter leads are disconnected from the exciter.

(2)

The number of accumulated starts is recorded in the Engine Log.

(3)

Starts are accurately counted by pilots and mechanics for entry into the Engine Log.
