CALCULATION & CONCLUSION

1. Which variable(s) in the Beers Law plot corresponds to the slope?
Beer's Law
A=lc
The slope (m) contained in Beer's law is l.
2. How do you determine the slope with 2 data points?
To determine the " l" based on 2 data points, l = A/C = (Astd+unk - Aunk)/ (C dilutedsol)

3. Use Beers Law to find the molar absorptivity of each ferrocene. Show one sample calculation.
Sample Calculation For Ferrocene
M1V1=M2V2
(.00175M)(.010 L) = (xM)(.025 L)
x = .0007 M
C = .00175 - .0007 = .00105

= A / lC
= (.118 - .087) / [(438 nm)(.00105)]
= .0674

Acetyl Ferrocene
= .0913
Diethyl Ferrocene
= 1.07
4. Using the molar absorptivities calculated in the previous question, calculate the concentration of the solution in the flask I for each ferrocene.
Concentration = Absorbance / Slope
Ferrocene Concentration = .0029M
Acetyl Ferrocene = .011M
Diethyl Ferrocene = .00024M
*Other group who did diethyl ferrocene may have recorded and shared the wrong values which results in a small concentration above.
5. Using the dilution equation (MconcVconc = MdilVdil), determine the concentration of solution A.
(MconcVconc = MdilVdil)
Solution A Concentration: .0007M
6. What is each ferrocenes mass and the total mass of the mixture that was loaded on the column? (Note: The total mass should be different for each
ferrocene, as each ferrocene measurement was done by a different group.) 7. Calculate the mass percent of each compound in the mixture by dividing
the mass of each individual component divided by the mass of all three added together. Multiple this value by 100%. As an example, here is formula for
the mass percent of Compound 1: Mass % of = m(Cpd 1) x 100% Cpd 1 [m(total)]
Mass % of = m(Cpd 1) x 100% Cpd 1 [m(total)]

8. Consult Figure 3 for the structures of the three unknowns. Based upon the order by which they eluted from the silica gel column, what is the identity
of Compounds 1, 2 and 3? Record your answer in your notebook and provide an explanation.

ERROR ANALYSIS
1. What modifications could be made to the procedure to better account for random (indeterminate) errors?

2. List three potential systematic (instrumental, methodological, or personal) errors that could be made in this experiment. (Note: Be specific,
systematic errors are in the details. For example, losing your solution because you knocked over the cuvette is not a systematic error its a gross
one.)
Some instrumental errors were the use of the 25 mL volumetric pipettes. There is bound to be room for error while measuring out the solutions.. A personal
error would be forgetting to close the windows on the mass scale which could affect the actual mass.

3. Did any gross errors occur? Did you mess up? Did the equipment or instrumentation fail?
Some gross errors that occured happened when the TLC plate was left in the solvent too long and the solvent past the mark. There were no instrumentation
and other equipment failures.
