STUDY ON SOIL INVESTIGATION

OF HABITAT ILUMINAR
INTRODUCTION
The above soil investigation was taken up by Mis. Geo Frontiers, # 48/7-3, 1st Cross,
Maruthi Nagara, Chandra Layout, Bangalore - 72
This report consists of the details about the various field tests and laboratory tests performed
and the recommendations made based on the results of the tests. The primary objective of this
investigation is,
1. to establish the ground condition at the site through field and laboratory testing.
2. to assess the allowable bearing pressure based on field and laboratory testing.

SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work includes,
1. Drilling the bore holes at the specified location using rotary drilling up to 1 2.0m
depth.
2. Conducting Standard Penetration test in soil at every 1.5m depth or whereever
strata changes up to the Refusal Strata
3. Collecting undisturbed and Representative samples in each of the strata for the
laboratory tests.
4. Conducting suitable laboratory tests on Soil / Rock samples for different Index
and Engineering properties.

FIELD TEST
a. Standard penetration test:Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted at different depths in all the
bore holes as the bore hole was advanced down and the 'N' values were recorded.
The SPT was carried out according to 1S 2131-1981 SPT (Standard penetration
test). The number of blows required to drive a 50mm diameter split spoon
sampler for a depth of 30cm using a 65 kg hammer is recorded as N values. The
test is halted if
i.

50 blows are required for any 150 mm penetration

ii.

100 blows are required for 30cm penetration

iii.

10 successive blows produce no advance

and correspondingly the N -value is recorded as "REFUSAL" .

As the bearing capacity depends upon

and hence on N, it can be related directly to N.

Teng (1962) gave the following equation for the net ultimate capacity of a strip footing.

net ultimate bearing capacity(kN/m2),

where

B=width of footing, N=average SPT number, Df=depth of footing. If Df>B, use Df=B.
and

are water table correction factor.

For square or circular footings,

i) ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE

Both shear failure and settlemen criteria are considered while arriving at the final value of
Allowable Bearing pressure. The values of allowable bearing pressure are calculated at
different depth (for a footing width of lm). This helps the structural designer to select the
allowable bearing pressure at the required depth depending on the structural loading. The
following allowable bearing pressure, which gives a factor of safety of 3.0 against shear
failure and for an allowable settlement of 25 mm is recommended.
ii) TYPE OF FOUNDATION
The type of foundation at a given Allowable bearing pressure is controlled by the magnitude
and type of loading.
* Individual footing may be designedwith the above recommended Allowable Bearing pressures
and all the column footings should be proportioned for equal settlement.
* The area of coverage of the footings should not be more than half of the total construction
area. If so, a raft foundation system is recom mended.
iii)

MODULUS OF SUB GRADE REACTION

The modulus of sub grade reaction can be determined from the Triaxial test data as per
IS 2950 -Part - 1 and IS 2720 -Part XI

where
E, = Modulus of elasticity of soil
E = Young's modulus of (oundatin material,
. = Poissons ratio of soil and
J = Moment of inertia of structure if determined or of the foundation.

2
From the test result, Es = 50.9x 10 kg/cm and = 0.3

Substitute this data in above equation with suitable E and I to obtain the values of
Modulus of Sub grade Reaction.
