Objectives

Students will review color mixing and tones by creating a color tone scale.
Students will use their knowledge of color schemes to create a color pallet
for their painting.
Elements of Art
Students will use their color mixing skills to create a color wash for their
monochromatic still life painting.
Art Production
Day 1 45minutes
Demonstrate: PPT
Guided Practice: Tone Scale w/ Grey
Using one color of your choice create a tone scale.
On the left of your canvas board paint a swatch of the color.
On the right paint a swatch of mid-tone gray.
Combine the two (color + gray) evenly to make a mid-tone.
Finish your value scale by creating three different levels of tone on
each side of this mid-tone.
Guided Practice: Intensity Scale w/ Compliment
Using two complimentary colors create an intensity scale.
On the left of your canvas board paint a swatch of on compliment.
On the right paint a swatch of the opposing compliment.
Combine the two evenly to make a mid-tone neutral.
Finish your value scale by creating three different levels of intensity for
each color. (Ex. Gradually add a little more blue to the mid-tone to
increase its intensity to the left. Gradually add more orange to the
mid-tone to increase its intensity to the right.
Day 2 45minutes
Demonstrate: Color Wash (videos)
Show students how to create a color for their still life painting. Using
ample amounts of water thin the acrylic to create a sort of watercolor.
Guided Practice: Small Canvas Board
Create a color wash for your sphere using the techniques shown.
Day 2 45minutes
Independent Practice:
Create a color wash for each of your forms in the still life.
Be sure to pay attention to the difference in shading for the objects and

Shade: any color + black, shadows
Tone: any color + gray
Intensity: The brightness or dullness of
any color. Any color + its compliment
Chromatic Black: a black made of a
chroma or color rather than containing
any specific black pigment.
