GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Please READ the format instructions below. Failure to follow these instructions may result in a 5 point
penalty to your exam score.
(1) Print your full name and section number (1 = Holman, 2 = Loveless) at the top of this page.
(2) Read and sign the honor statement below.
(3) Put answers to all questions in the spaces provided on the test.

Show all work for full credit. All answers must include proper units and be in engineering (decimal)
format. No credit will be given for answers without supporting work. Partial credit may be awarded for
incomplete or incorrect problems.

You may use the backs of the exam sheets as scratch paper.

Problems and questions are weighted as indicated. Maximum score = 100 points. Budget your time wisely.
Do not leave any problem or question blank.
HONOR CODE STATEMENT

This exam is given under the Vanderbilt University Honor Code. You should not have anything on your desk
except your calculator, laptop computer, and appropriate writing equipment. Space has been provided on each
page for you to work the answers out. Any other papers on your desk will be considered a violation of the
Honor Code.
If you are using a calculator, you must clear its memory prior to the exam. If formulas, information, or
programs pertinent to the course are stored in your calculator and used during the exam, such actions will be
considered a violation of the Honor Code.
If you are using a laptop computer, you are required to disable all wireless access (WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.)
during the exam. The only software you are permitted to run during the exam is Mathematica (or Matlab), and
you may not use any previously saved Mathematica / Matlab workspaces (notebooks). Running any other
software during the exam (including email or text messaging applications) will be considered a violation of the
Honor Code.
HONOR CODE PLEDGE:
I have read and understood the above Honor Code Statement. The work on this exam is strictly my own. I
pledge my honor that I have neither given nor received aid on this examination.

Problem 1. (25 Points)

For the above circuit, the current i through the 4 resistor is measured between 0 and 4
seconds (s) and plotted above.
(a) Assume q(0) = 0 C. Find the total charge, qtot, that moves through the resistor from 0 to
4s.
(b) Determine the power supplied or absorbed by the 4 resistor at times t = 0.5s, t= 1.5s,
and t = 2.5s.
(c) Find the total work w absorbed by the resistor from time 0 to 4s.
