This lace scarf is knitted in a heavy lace weight yarn, but would look equally good (if not better) in a
lace weight yarn. It is a repeating 16-stitch, 12-row pattern and is easily adaptable to make as wide or
as narrow a scarf or stole as you would like to create. You just change the number of 16-stitch
repeats you work across the width of the scarf. The sample scarf used an entire skein of John Arbon
Excellite yarn (489m/545yds per 100g)
I cast on 71 stitches to create this scarf:- 4 x the 16-stitch repeat, plus 7 stitches to create the garter
ridge edging.

What you will need to knit the scarf

3.25mm (US3) circular lace needles or needles to get an appropriate tension.
100g Heavy laceweight yarn (approx. 500m/570yds per 100g) or yarn or your choice. Please note,
changing the yarn will change the amounts required to knit a scarf of this size.

Instructions
(If you prefer to follow a chart, you will find this on page 3. You will also find a glossary of
stitches on page 3.)
To knit the sample scarf, cast on 71 stitches. This will create four leaf ladders across the width of the
scarf.
If you would like to make a narrower or wider scarf, the formula for calculating the number of stitches
to cast on is 7 + (n x 16) where n is the number of ladders you want. To give you a rough idea of
dimensions on my sample scarf, each ladder is approximately 2.75 inches or 7 cms wide and the
garter ridge edging adds approximately 1 inch (2.5cm) to the width. If you are using a different weight
yarn, you may want to swatch first.
Lets start knitting..
