CHARACTERISTICS

There are many characters that are available in the passage but pick one or two
that you can write a lot with. That has to be Phileas Fogg because he is the mai
n character.
Phileas Fogg s characteristics:
Characteristics
Punctual and disciplined
Evidence
Phileas Fogg wakes up at precisely eight o clock in the morning and has breakf
ast exactly 23 minutes later.
He also owns a clock which is very unique because it shows not only the time
but also the year up till the second.
He also has a routine where he goes to the Reform Club for his meals and to
meet up with his friends.
Characteristics
Determined
Evidence
During his travel, he persevered. Despite having faced so many calamities an
d challenges, he did not give up and never once did he complain. Instead, he fou
nd solutions to his problems for instance; they had to buy an elephant to get th
ere from one place to another because there were some problems with the train.

Characteristics
Caring/Compassionate
Evidence
Phileas Fogg decided to rescue Aouda, who was a stranger to him, from the ba
ndits. Although this rescue could have caused him his wager or even life, he was
willing to take the risk. They stayed on until at night to conduct the rescue m
ission.
Characteristics
Generous
Evidence
Phileas Fogg, paid for the fine on behalf of his butler, Passepartout becaus
e he trespassed the temple wearing shoes.
Phileas Fogg also gave away the elephant to the guide as a token of apprecia
tion for helping them.
After rescuing Aouda, he made sure that she was taken care of and paid for a
ll her expenses and even invited her to join them to Hong Kong.

Least favourite character has to be Detective Fix right?

Again, list down what you do not like about him. Just like Phileas Fogg.
THEMES
From the characteristics, you can derive the themes. You can have themes in phra
ses or word. I usually teach my students to use one word theme just because it i
s easier to remember.
Therefore, you can find perseverance and love as the themes.
Perseverance can be seen throughout the novel especially all the trials that Phi
leas Fogg and his butler Passepartout endured. So, all you need to do is take th
e evidence from above.

MESSAGE/MORAL OF THE STORY
How I normally teach my students is that I give them a template.
For message or moral of the story, you can also use the characteristics that you
have memorised.
For example: punctual and discipline
We should be punctual and discipline.
After that, again.... you follow the evidence given:
Phileas Fogg wakes up at precisely eight o clock in the morning and has breakf
ast exactly 23 minutes later.
He also owns a clock which is very unique because it shows not only the time
but also the year up till the second.
He also has a routine where he goes to the Reform Club for his meals and to
meet up with his friends.

After the evidence, you need to tell what does it teach you. Why punctual is imp
ortant?
For example, punctual is important because if we are not punctual we will cause
people to wait for us and that is not a very good habit especially when we are i
n the working world. It is unprofessional.
Think of something that you can relate to so that it will give depth to your evi
dence. Don't worry, I will get to the writing part later.
FAVOURITE SCENE
For favourite scenes, you can always look back at the evidence in the characteri
stics.
For example, you pick the incident where you explain the rescue mission of Aouda
. Why is that your favourite scene? Here you can incorporate what you have learn
t - moral of the story. We should help people who is in need of help because we
do not know when we will be in trouble. You can also elaborate on his (Phileas F
ogg and Passepartout) selfless act.
With that, your points will be strengthened and carries more weight because it s
hows that you know how to analyse and evaluate!=)
DO YOU LIKE THE STORY?
So, how do you find the story? Was it interesting? Was it boring? Which part of
the story was interesting? What do you feel when you have finished reading the b
ook?
In order to write, you can pick a few of important scenes - rescue mission of Ao
uda, the sail back to Liverpool, and the capture of Philea Fogg which almost cos
t him his wager. From these incidences, you describe what you felt. You were to
uched, you were anxious if they would make it, you felt sorry for Phileas Fogg,
etc. You like the story because what it teaches you. Here you can write the mora
l of the story. What you have learned from this novel that made you like it. =)
YOUR OPINION ON THE ENDING
What is the ending of the story? - It was a happy ending isn't it? Phileas Fogg
won the wager and Aouda was with him in the end.
After you have briefly elaborated the ending, were you anticipating for such end
ing or did you catch it by surprise? Were you satisfied with the ending? If yes,
why? Probably you could say:
every good person deserves a good ending
especially when Phileas Fogg has worked so hard and did not give up duri
ng his trials along the journey
Aouda did not leave him although at first they thought Phileas Fogg has
lost all the money. It shows that Aouda loves Phileas Fogg for who he is and not
after his material possessions.
Similarly, Passepartout is loyal to Phileas Fogg. He did not leave him.
the writer had a good twist towards the end
everyone thought that Phileas Fogg will not win the wager because of the
delay Detective Fix had caused him.
However, he was saved by the alertness of Passepartout and the time diff
erence. That saves the day.

The Moral Values that I Have Learnt

I have selected the novel entitled Around the World in 80 Days written by Jules Ve
rne in order to answer the question. The novel tells about a gentleman named Phi
leas Fogg who goes around the world in 80 days with his butler, Jean Passepartou
t as they embark on journey which is full of adventures and surprises.
The moral values that I have learnt from the novel are be organised, be brave an
d be persistent. The moral values are portrayed by the main character in the nov
el, Phileas Fogg. First and foremost, Phileas Fogg is an organized person who l
eads his life in a well organised way such as his shaving water must be of a cer
tain degree and he eats his lunch every time in the Reform Club at his usual tim
e. In addition to this, Phileas Fogg is a brave person when he decides to save A
ouda. He has to risk his life and freedom to rescue Aouda but Phileas Fogg is wi
lling to do whatever is within his reach to free her from her kidnappers. Last b
ut not least, Phileas Fogg is a persistent person when he accepts a bet to trave
l around the world and he finally succeeds in his quest.
In conclusion, the moral values that I have learnt from the novel are be organis
ed, be brave and be persistent. All the moral values have taught me to be a bett
er person in my life.
