The idea of line can mean a broad variety of things.

It can be used to define the shapes

of places, people, and objects; or it can be used to illustrate ideas and concepts. Line
materializes in an endless list of things, places, and even concepts. Its something we as
humans create on a daily basis through expression. Line is one of the most important
components in art and design; we see line in the way light and shadows interact with the objects
and settings around us, and it is also a versatile tool with which we can create and manipulate
to provoke thought and emotion. Its such a vague object, and may not even qualify as an object
at all, yet it is one of the most prominent things in our everyday lives.

The idea and use of line as an object has existed for as long as human perception and
arguably beforehand. It is a prominent component in each of the most historically and culturally
significant works of art, from parietal art, to renaissance paintings, to iconic pieces of modern art
such as the works of Keith Haring. One of the most culturally significant myths featuring line is
the Red String of Fate. This myth, originating in China, tells the story of an invisible red string
tying together those who are destined to meet each other. This myth paints the idea of line in a
romantic way, showing its power in connecting people. In a contrary representation, a figurative
line is used in the Chinese folktale of The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd. This story tells of two
people whose love is forbidden, and as a result they are separated by the Silver River. This
can be an example of line being used to keep people apart, rather than bringing them together.

Line fits into virtually every era and genre. Its an item with such broad characteristics
and definitions, despite its simplicity. Lines can symbolize a connection between two things,
bringing people and opposing forces together. On the other hand, line can represent a divide
between two things, drawing a line to separate people and even ideas. A straight line represents
order and diligence, a curved line expresses freedom and relaxation. Line can be manipulated
to represent heartbeats or sound waves.

Because the concept of line is so complex and in depth, the best way to express this
object is to simplify and strip down the idea of line and show how a simple horizontal line can
materialize in several different places, contexts, and narratives. I believe that an evenly timed
pacing and symmetrical framing will showcase my object in the best way. Instead of focusing on
a single narrative, an abstract illustration of the way line presents itself in the lives of different
people in different situations may be a more candid and interesting study of such an object.
