1. Visuallearningisalearningstyleinwhichideas,concepts,data,andother
informationareassociatedwithimagesandtechniques.Studentswiththis
learningstylehavestrengthsinlearningandreadingwhenvisualaidsare
presented.Thistypeoflearningstyleisoneofthethreemainlearningstyles,
alongwithkinestheticlearningandauditorylearning.Waystoeffectivelyutilize
thevisuallearningstylecouldbetousegraphs,charts,maps,anddiagramsin
lessonswithstudentswhobenefitfromvisuallearning.
2. Appliedlearningisalearningstyleinwhichstudentsapplyknowledgeandskills
learnedfromthetraditionalclassroomandtranslatethemtohandsonorreal
worldsettings,creativeprojectsorindependentordirectedresearch.Students
applywhatisgainedfromexperiencetoacademiclearning.Studentswhoprefer
appliedlearningpreferrealobjectsandsituationsthatarepractical.Waysto
effectivelyutilizeappliedlearningintheclassroomcouldbetoallowstudentsto
havestudentscompleteprojectsandwritingintensiveactivities.Inthese
activitiesstudentscoulduseexternalresourcesandrealworldconnections.
3. Verballearningusesbothwrittenandspokenword.Studentswhousethisstyle
typicallyfinditeasytoexpressthemselvesbothways,andpreferverbaland
languageskills.Thesestudentshavetroublepositioningthingsinspace.An

effectivewaytoutilizethislearningstylecouldbetoconductactivitieswith
rhyming,initiatingvocabularybanks,orcreatingtheirownnewsletter.
4. Sociallearningisalearningstyleinwhichstudentsprefertoworkdirectlywith
classmatesandinstructors.Thesetypesofstudentsarepeopleorientedandenjoy
interactingwithpeers.Toeffectivelyutilizethislearningstyle,teacherscould
createactivitiesandlessonsthatcanbeconductedingroupsorpartners.
5. Pragmaticlearningisalearningstyleinwhichstudentsarepractical,logical,
andsystematic.Studentswiththislearningstyleliketofollowasetofdirections
whencompletingtasks.Toeffectivelyutilizethislearningstylewithstudents,
teachercancreatelessonsthatrequirealistofsteps,focusonproblemsolving,
anduseastructuredstudyenvironmentintheclassroom.

Asateacher,itisveryimportanttoknowthelearningstylesofeverystudentinthe
classroom;infact,thisideaisespeciallyimportantforEnglishLanguageLearners.
EnglishLanguageLearnersthatarenewtotheclassroomareatadisadvantagecompared
totherestofthestudents.Teachersmustfindwaystohelpthesestudentstransitionand
learnEnglishasbesttheycan.Ifateachercanidentifythestudentsdominantlearning
styles,theteachercancreatelessonsoraccommodationsforthestudentusingthe
particularlearningstyle.Forexample,ifthestudentisavisuallearnertheteachercan
providethestudentwithimagesthatcorrespondwithwhatheorsheisteaching.The
teacherandstudentwouldbeatapositionforhigherdevelopmentwiththeeffectiveuse
oftheselearningstyles.
