Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda, regarded as

the Philippine national hero, was the first intellectual in
Southeast Asia to think systematically about social and political
issues.
The purpose of this paper was to explore the socio-political
and economic thoughts of Jose Rizal. In order to respond to these
thoughts, we have to scrutinize his works such as the Noli Me
Tangere, El Filibusterismo...

For example:
Rizal looked upon education as a prerequisite to the
realization of a peoples freedom. It is through education that
people obtains knowledge of themselves as individuals and as
members of a nation. He insisted on educating his people so that
they may successfully eradicate the vices of their society. He
wanted them to develop a national awareness of their rights and
pride in their countrys heritage and culture.
At early age, Jose Rizal developed the spirit of nationalism
as he became aware of his Motherland. Inspired by the gains he
had in education, he had envisioned what education can do to a
country if its leadership would be made up of a pool of educated
youth. He expressed his thoughts on education in his poem
entitled Through Education Our Motherland Receives Light.
The first stanza of the poem is a follows:
The vital breath of prudent education
Instils a virtue of enchanting power;
She lifts the Motherland to highest station
And endless sizzling glories on her shower.
And as zephyrs gentle exhalation
Receives the matrix of the fragrant flower,
So education multiplies her gifts of grace;
With prudent hand imparts them to human race.
In this poem, Jose Rizal urged his fellow students to
educate themselves because wise education gives birth to science
and art. As the hope of the Motherland or Fatherland, they could
also do a lot to improve not only their lives but also the social
conditions of the Philippines. Jose Rizal considered education
very important among the youth who will someday assume leadership
in the country.
