PROJECT NAME: The LIGHT Project: Paving the Avenue for Change

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Many prisoners feel rejected by society once they are released. Prejudice,
intolerance and stereotypes abound; this affects those who have used their time in
prison effectively as much as those who have not.
The society unfairly generalized all prisoners to be of negative character.
They were often viewed as reckless and irresponsible, aberrant and deviant.
However, the unfortunate truth stood behind the bars.
Academics and criminal experts underscore the responsibility society has in
taking part in the rehabilitation process. Trusting ex-prisoners to turn their lives
around can turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Only a few understand that detainees
do not just strive to make a new start, they also attempt to dream a new, brighter
dream. This very thought motivated our local chapter to pave the ways for
transformation and to be the light of the future.
In line with this thought, our local chapter came up with a socio-civic activity
entitled, The LIGHT Project: Paving the Avenue for Change. This project aims to
visit one prison wherein detainees use their spare time making crafts for the
purpose of selling them to finance their daily needs.
Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng
Maynila (JPIA-PLM) will hold true to its purpose and promise to be the avenue for
change. We will always serve as the channel, the bridge, and the path for a brighter
tomorrow. Indeed, transformation begins when someone has the courage to stand
up and take the challenge.

OBJECTIVES:

This project aims to uplift the detainees personal, social, spiritual, and
psychological demeanor.
This project aims to help change the misconceptions about the prisoners
through the promotions of their handicrafts to various people and possible
buyers.
This project aims to develop social values and social responsibility among
JPIAns through:
1. Exhibiting a deeper sense of service; that is, compassion for humankind.
2. Demonstrating a principled attitude and mindset in implementing
outreach projects.
3. Becoming directly and intensively involved in outreach programs; thus,
realize community involvement as a responsibility.

CHOSEN BENEFICIARY:
Our local chapter started a negotiation with New Bilibid Prison at
Muntinlupa City to conduct The LIGHT Project within its vicinity. Detainees in this
penitentiary make handicrafts for a living.
