B. COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
(a)

understand proverbs, idioms, clichs, similes;

(b)

interpret short texts (e.g. poems);

(c)

skim and scan a variety of texts;

(d)

analyse short texts for overall theme, main ideas and supporting details;

(e)

identify and use basic parts of speech and tenses;

(f)

read literary and narrative texts and identify basic elements such as character, plot, style, technique
and theme;

(g)

deliver simple presentation on a prepared topic based on short stories; and

(h)

write essays of about 250 - 300 words.

Notes:
Assessment 1: Answer questions (comprehension and grammar) based on a poem. The test should be
administered in class.
Assessment 2: Answer reading comprehension questions based on the text given. The test should be
administered in class.
Writing Assessment: Write an essay of about 250 300 words based on the two short stories in Unit 6. This
task should be completed in class.
Individual Oral Presentation based on the 3 texts in Unit 7. Give students about 5 minutes for the oral
presentation. Students should not read but may refer to notes. The use of audio-visual aids is encouraged.
