PWHT ( METHOD AND EQUIPMENTS ) - 4

The post weld that heat treatment of the welded joints on a pipe or the branch connection
shall be carried out by electric resistance method and after the completion of all welding
or repairing operations. No welding shall be performed on the heat treated joint, otherwise
the joints shall be re-heat treated.
The heating coils or elements are of electrical resistance type. The resistance heater coils
are electrically and thermally self insulated and are built to size for each individual pipe.
The applied voltage across the coils is either 220 or 380 volts AC depending on the
power requirements.
The power controlling panel is composed of :
a . A temperature controller and indicator of digital or analogue type.

2/4

b. Recorder for recording of presses ( with different points and colors )

c . On and off switches, indicator lights , input and output terminals for power and
thermocouple connections.
d . Electrical power contactors of proper rating.
Each panel will supply a single heating station and therefore for each heating operation
one panel will be needed .
5 - PREPARATION FOR PWHT
Heat will be applied locally by means of electrical heating elements to a circumferential
band of the pipe in which the center portion is the weld.
The width of the heated band on either side of weld edge shall be according to para
333.2.6 of ASME B.31.3 or para 132.7of ASME B.31.1 and shall not be less than three (3)times
the pipe thickness or 50 mm whichever is greater
6 - THERMOCOUPLES ATTACHMENT
The thermocouples shall be in metallic contact with the parts being heated and shall be
The thermocouples shall be in metallic contact with the parts being heated and shall be
be attached by an approved mechanical method(temporary localized weld deposits, etc.) .
in order to avoid incorrect temperature reading due to direct radiation to thermocouples,
the thermocouples shall be protected by ceramic putty, ceramic fiber blanket or any other
suitable insulating material.
The cold junction of thermocouples and compensating lead wires shall by protected from
direct heat .
7 - THERMAL INSULATON METHOD
Heating object should be covered by ceramic fiber .
1. Width of insulation sufficient the temperature outside the band is below 200 c
2. Ends of pipe to be blocked by insulation.
8 - PWHT TEMPERATURE TIME RECORD (PWHT CHART)
The work temperature and its rating shall be temperature represents the actual
temperature
of the weld area .
Each thermocouple may be connected to the controlling and recording obtained for each
treated joint .
post weld heat treatment shall be recorded .

9 - THERMOCOUPLE ARRANGEMENT
The number and location of thermocouples for piping is as follows.

straddle to the weld
One shall be on weld center and the remaining two shall straddle the weld
Shall be located on weld center 180 apurt , the other 2 shall straddle the weld

10 - HEATING , HOLDING AND COOLING

Heating rate is unlimited up to 300C and form there on will be per requirements ASME B31.3
The selected heating rate is 200C c/hour
Holdig temperature would be per table 1 Holding time would be one hour per inch of pipe
wall
tickness (minimum one hour).
On completion of holding, the heated pipe will be slowly cooled at the rate and to the
temperature
Specified in the table 1 and then left to cool down in still air . The selected cooling rate is
250C
c/hour
11 - HARDNESS TEST
Hardness checks shall be performed to determine if heat treatment has been performed
Satisfactorily . (100 % of those which are locally heat treated)
The hardness limited shall apply to the weld and the weld and the heat affected zone.
Hardness tests shall be made with a Brielle testing machine or a portable hardness tester.
Hardness test of the heat affected zone shall be made at a points as near as practicable
to the edge of the weld.
Hardness tests shall consist of at least two surface measurements on the deposit weld metal.
Hardness results on the weld metal shall not exceed 200HB for P.NO.1 & 225HB for
P.NO.3&4,241 HB for P.NO.5
Results of hardness test shall be documented.
12 - REQURID DATA OF PWHT CHRT
a) chart identification number
b) data of performance
c) weld identification / line number.
d) number , position & reference mark of the thermocouples.
e) temperature & time scales.
f) signature of inspector .
