ThismarksthemilestoneasthefirsteverNationalPopulationRegister(NPR).
Allthepersonsagedabout15arephotographedandfingerprinted(eightfingersand2
thumbs)tocreateabiometricnationaldatabase.
Thisisthe15thcensusforIndia.
Thecountryfirststarteditscensusintheyear1872.
Thefirstregularcensuswasconductedintheyear1881byLordRippon.
15thcensuswillcoveredall640districts,5767tehsils,7742townsandmorethan6lakh
villagesinthecountry.
15thcensusstartedonApril1,2010andtheentireprocesswascompletedbyMarch5,
2011.
NPR is set amidst NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid), the UID (Unique
Identification Project) and still waiting in the wings the DNA Bank. NATGRID will
enable 11 security and intelligence agencies including RAW, IB, ED, National
InvestigatingAgency,CBI,theDirectorateofRevenueIntelligenceandNarcoticControl

operation.

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state with 199 million people followed by
Maharashtrawith112million.
Lakshadweepistheleastpopulatedwith64,429people.
Theoverallsexrationationwidehasincreasedby7points940.(In2001itwas933).
Anincreaseinsexratiowasobservedin29states/UnionTerritories.
Keralahasthehighestsexratiowith1084followedbyPuducherrywith1038.
DamanandDiuhasthelowestsexratiowith618.
JammuandKashmir,BiharandGujarathaveshownadeclineinsexratioascomparedto
census2001.
Thechildsexratiois914.(0to6years).Itwas927inCensus2001.
Theliteracyrateincreasedto74.04percent.(Itwas64.83percentincensus2001).The
