Dialectical Journal:
1.) "Are they changed because they want to go back to their
old life, or is it because they're so depressed at realizing
their old life was no better than what we have now?" (149)
This question is asked by Thomas because hes's curious
about why people are changing. But they realize that their
old life is better than their new life.
2.) I remembered things from growing up, where I lived, that
sort of stuff. And if God himself came down right now and
told me I could go back home If it was real, Greenie, I swear
I'd go shack up with the Grievers before goin' back." (197)
From Alby's experinced of the changing process he explains
to thomas that he remembers some memories of his past life
and he believes theres no world outside the world
3.) I promised him! he screamed, realizing even as he did so
that his voice was laced with something wrong. Almost
insanity. "I promised I'd save him, take him home! I promised
him! (358)
Thomas is hurt by chucks death because he made a promise
that he will take him home safely
4.) "If you ain't scared you ain't human" (9)
Alby is warning Thomas about how scary the new place can
be and its okay if hes afraid because they all are.
5.) Thats one of the reasons we run this place all nice and
busylike. You get lazy, you get sad. Start giving up, Plain and
simple (77)

They want Thomas to start helping because they want to

keep them busy so they gain strength."
6.) You dont understand, shuck-face! You dont know
anything, and youre just making it worse by trying to have
hope! Were dead, you hear me? Dead! (117)
They are trying to give hope to each other so they wont die
while in the maze and they dont want anymore people dying
they want them to keep trying to survive.
7.) Are they changed because they want to go back to their

As Thomas lost his memory, they are both sad because their
memories has been snatched away and they cant remember
anything.
8.) This aint got nothin to do with no hate or like or love or
friends or anything. All we care about is surviving. Drop your
sissy side and start using that shuck brain if you got one
(86)
Thomas mistaked alby feelings of hate, she says that
survival is more important than her feelings to show shes not
weak.
9.) "I didnt do anything wrong. All I know is I saw two people
struggling to get inside these walls and they couldnt make
it. To ignore that because of some stupid rule seemed selfish,
cowardly, as well, stupid" (166)
Thomas wanted to be selfless by saving the struggling
people but he thought the rules were unfair.
10.) Most of the physical effects are caused by something
else. First the delusions start, then animal instincts begin to

overpower the human ones. Finally it consumes them,

destroys their humanit, We wont let them do this to
children, Weve sworn our lives to fighting wicked, We cant
lose our humanity, no matter the end result (366)
The disease makes them lose their humanity. Act different,
think different, look different. But they will fight till the end.
11.) "Sometimes you dont look very hard for things you dont
believe will can happen." (260)
Most of the time good things happen when your not looking
so hard for them and they come unexpected.
12.) "Tonight, theyd make their stand, once and for all."
(202)
They are going to face the struggles and try to survive it and
get stronger through on their life.
13.) "Avoiding other people was his new goal in life" (37)
Thomas had a goal of becoming a runner but the other
people doubting that will happen so to focus on his goal he
had to not let people in his way.
14.) "Cant take a chance that one day, in one spot,
somewhere, an exit might appear. We cant give up. Ever"
(245)
They realize that sometimes people wont get through their
goals, but it will show when your close to acheving his goal.
15.) "Minho looked at Thomas. I nominate this shank to
replace me as Keeper of the Runners." (128)
Minho witnessed the hard work thomas has done so he
thinks thomas a spot to become a runner.
16.) "He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold

darkness and stale, dusty air." (10)

As Thomas awoken from losing his memoires he gets up and
sees that he is in a new world.
17.) "Be thankful for these walls."
The walls is thankful by it protecting them from the
Greavers.
18.) "If we're gonna die, let's do it freakin' fighting!" (89)
They reason if their going to die fighting is because its to
sacerfice themselves up to the challenge in the walls and to
escape this world their in.
19.) "You're welcome. I was just trying to help.' Thomas felt
like kicking him in the face." (155)
Thomas was getting unwanted help so he was aggravated.
Even though he just wanted to help him, he doesn't need
help.
20.) "Shes the last one ever"
They got shocked saying she was going to be the last person
sent to the world which is Teresa.
