Introduction
Food, Supermarket and Cooking works well with any beginner class, but is ideal for a
teacher with a multi-level beginner class. All teachers know the challenge of finding
material for a multi-level class. Its difficult to find one workbook to meet the needs of
all the students. We created our own material to overcome this problem. Each theme has
three beginner levels. Most target vocabulary is illustrated, but in some cases higher
level students will be asked to use their dictionaries to define the target vocabulary.
The students reinforce the new vocabulary with time-tested exercises. Once the
vocabulary is reinforced the students practise their new vocabulary through reading,
writing, listening and speaking exercises. A rich variety of exercises will
interest and engage your students.
Teachers often wish there was an audio CD with workbooks. They want their students to
hear more native speakers of English in their classroom. The audio CD included with this
book has six native speakers - 3 male and 3 female. The CD content and track numbers
are listed in the table of contents. Also look for the symbol seen to the right on the
exercise pages. It indicates an audio CD track is available and the track number. Some
tracks are dedicated listening exercises, some are audio answer keys and others are
alternative tracks for read-a-long or passive listening. This content information is
available in the table of contents. If you dont want your students to be passive listeners
try this activity. Photocopy the target vocabulary, pass out one word to each student
and then play the read-a-long track. Each time the student hears their word they hold it
up or they stand up.
We have included pounds and kilograms in the book since some food packaging, cookbooks and advertising may use one or the other, or both. The word yogourt can be
spelled several different ways but we used this spelling - yogourt.
See the Instruction Tips on page 136 for extra activities.
