It was a usual hot day near the Caguas River
where the battle was to be fought. We could hear the horses of the approaching Spaniards and the howling of their dogs. But we were ready. We were many and every Taino was armed with a club or a spear. We had the best bowman at the front facing the Spaniards. I could see my father and brothers behind the bowman. Then a roar as loud as thunder came from the Spaniards. They used long metal tubes that exploded with fire and threw metal balls at our side. Smaller handheld tubes were also exploding and throwing little metal balls at us. I began to see some of our warriors go down with blood coming out of their bodies.

When the Spaniards charged at us they were led
by their mean dogs and men on horses. Then followed the men on foot with their long metal sticks that could easily cut through skin. Some of our warriors were able to attack and kill some of the Spaniards, but the Spaniards metal clothes protected them and our warriors did not have any metal to fight with or to protect us. I saw my father and brothers cut by the Spaniards sticks. My older brother was fighting off a dog when a Spaniard speared him from behind.
