CITY OF SAN JUAN

POLITICAL CLANS & POWER BLOCS

EJERCITO-ESTRADA
The Ejercitos kept control of the San Juan City as members of the powerful clan
are proclaimed winners after a very heated local race against a former ally, the
Zamoras. With 28,828 votes, incumbent mayor Guia Gomez successfully defended
her post from her vice mayor, Francis Zamora of the Nacionalista Party (NP) who got
27,604 votes. The vice mayoral post, meanwhile, went to Senator Jinggoy Estradas
daughter and incumbent Councilor Janella Marie Ejercito who got 29,939 votes
against NP bet Rolando Bernardos 20,505.
ZAMORA
The Zamoras and Estradas were used to be political allies in San Juan City until
2013, when the Ejercitos fielded Gomez again as mayor, contrary to the familys
promise to the Zamoras that they would end their reign in the citys mayoralty.
Ronaldo Zamora, the incumbent representative of San Juan is a long-time
congressman who served the city for almost two decades. His son, Francis Zamora
who served for two consecutive terms as Vice Mayor, ran for mayoralty post in the
2016 elections. He faced the incumbent mayor Guia Gomez, promising to stop the
dynasty of the Ejercito-Estradas, who, in his words, have run the city's politics for 47
years. However he lost to Gomez.
