General Environment
Technological Development
Aircraft provide fast and reliable mode of transport for long distance travel.
Few people believed that powered flight is possible before the Wright
Brothers invented and built the worlds first successful airplane. Today, the
spirit of innovation continues and its driving the industrys response to its
environmental challenges. Technological improvements in the field of
aviation has made it possible for aircrafts to be more fuel efficient. Todays
aircraft are now more than 15% better in fuel burn compared to comparable
aircrafts a decade ago, and will provide 40% lower emission the previous
aircraft design. Newer aircraft, like the Boeing 787, consume less then three
liters, on average, per 100 passenger kilometers. This compares favorably to
that of compact cars.
Advancements in solar technology is now paving the way for a fossil fuel free
air travel. The worlds first round-the-world flight with a plane using only
solar power has happened last March of this year. Its the biggest step
towards removing fossil fuel from air travel meaning lower emissions and
operational costs for commercial airlines. NASA is also looking for
environmental friendly air travel. NASAs N+3 design developments
represents almost zero emissions. The Sky Whale, a concept from Spanish
designer Oscar Vinals, could hold 755 people, take off vertically and self
repair its own wings, even makes it more environmentally friendly. Its double
fuselage and solar concepts on the wings will make refueling unnecessary.
In the computing space, the introduction of the iPad, and the emergence of
tablets in general, made it easier for airlines to provide entertainments at
ones fingertips. Hawaiian Airlines, for example, already offers iPad minis for
passengers to use in-flight instead of installing screens on the back of the
seats.

B. Industry and Competitor Analysis

Technological Developments
It is a known fact the the airline industry extensively uses technology in its
operations although they are limited to the operations of the airlines. To
survive the intense competition in the airline industry, latest technology
must be adapted by airliners. Technological changes have to be adapted to
include mobile technologies concerning ticketing and customer service.
Recent technological developments have made it possible for ticketless
travel and mobile booking. Social media also has to be leveraged by airliners
to ensure that the the airline industry will not be left behind with the changes
in the social and technological areas. Using advanced aircraft technology will
not only result in lower consumption of fuel, but will also improve efficiency
and lower airline operation cost. Also, the increase in use of the internet has
provided many opportunities to airlines. For example, Air Sahara has
introduced a service wherein seats can be auctioned one week before
departure, through the use of the internet.
