NetNumen M3 (ZXC10
BSSB) Networking Model
Overview

The NetNumen M3 (ZXC10 BSSB) helps operators implement

integrated centralized management of all NEs (Network
Elements) of ZXC10 CDMA mobile communication system in the
whole network. This system supports hierarchical networking
and multiple communication modes, and is capable of local and
remote centralized operation & maintenance of various NEs in
the CDMA network. In this way, it provides a solid basis for the
comparison, evaluation, and network optimization of equipment
status in various areas.
The NetNumen M3 (ZXC10 BSSB) has two networking models:
3-layer networking model and 2-layer networking model.

Two-layer
model

Figure 1 shows the 2-layer networking model.

The Network Management Center (NMC) is the NM convergence

point. NMC gathers data from OMM modules interfacing with the
respective NEs.
The NEs configuration is done in OMM. OMM is a convenient
management tool for telecom operators customer service
personnel, network design personnel, and onsite maintenance
personnel. Network elements that form part of a CDMA network
comprise Base Station Subsystem.
The NEs include BSS and BSSB equipment.
BSS is based on 2.5 generation CDMA technology.
BSSB is based on the 3rd generation CDMA technology. It is an
ALL-IP machine.
Three-Layer
Model

The 3-layer networking structure has an additional Local

Network Management Center (LNMC) layer between the Network
Management Center (NMC) and Operation and Maintenance
Module (OMM). LNMC and NMC have same installation
procedures.

NMC Client

Description

NMC Client

The NetNumen M3 (ZXC10 BSSB) system has numerous O&M

functions to fully satisfy users actual management demands,
and to be gradually migrated to unattended NetNumen M3
(ZXC10 BSSB) system. Capable of local operation &
maintenance of various NEs, the system provides such O&M
functions as configuration management, alarm management,
security management, and performance management, and
implements centralized O&M. Based on the basic NM functions,
the NetNumen M3 (ZXC10 BSSB) system enhances system
maintenance & management by supplying a series of auxiliary
tools that help users to inspect running state of network
equipment, and implement control over the equipment to ensure
stable running.
OMM consists of OMM client and server applications, usually
installed on the same computer. NMC server and client are
normally installed on two different computers but they can be
installed on the same computer for actual server installation.
Session Server is installed in separate server. This separate
server works as an auxiliary server for OMM. Session Server
stores session information in the high-rate packet data system,
providing backup session data for different services.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

Chapter 1 Overview

Install Session Server and OMM on two separate servers. Since

the Session Server and OMM installation is similar, this chapter
does not focus on Session Server installation. Supply the same
parameter on the installation window of Session Server and
OMM.

Software Installation
Requirements
Overview

NMC and OMM applications have different installation

requirements and procedures. This section describes installation
requirements for NMC and OMM applications.
The installation requirements of NMC and LNMC are the same.
Hence, this section does not describe LNMC.

Appendix

Disk Array Configuration

This appendix describes the procedures for Disk array
configuration. Before the actual configuration process,
knowledge about various concepts is necessary. In this view, the
two sections which are described in this appendix are:

Disk array Concepts

Disk array Configuration

Disk Array Concepts

This section describes the concepts about disk array.
Disk array

A disk array consists of several disks combined into a single

continuous storage space.

Hot spare

It is a mechanism where, when an active disk fails, another idle,

powered-on and standby disk can take its place immediately.

Initialization

It is the process to write zero in the data area on the logical

drive, and create the appropriate parity bit, so that the logical
drive is ready.
The initialization process will delete the old data and create the
parity check, and will check the logical drive for consistency
during this process. An un-initialized array is not usable.

Logical drive

The logical drive divides the disks in one or different arrays into
a continuous storage space, which is distributed over all the
disks in the array.

Logical volume

Also referred to as a disk partition, a logical volume is a virtual

disk composed of logical disks.

Logical Unit
(LUN)

A logical unit consists of one or more disk modules bound

together.

RAID

The RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) is an array of

multiple small independent disks.
The RAID disk sub-system has a higher I/O performance than a
single disk.

Confidential and Proprietary Information of ZTE CORPORATION

185

NetNumen M3 (ZXC 10 BSSB) (V 3.08.19.00) Software Installation Manual (Windows)

RAID Level

RAID is available in the following levels: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 3,

RAID 1+0 and RAID 5.
RAID 0+1 combines the characteristics of RAID 0 and RAID 1:
excellent read/write performance and high security. However, it
requires a high cost to build the array, and the data space is not
efficiently used.
RAID 5 is now the most popular RAID level. RAID 5 uses blocklevel striping with parity data distributed across all member
disks. The RAID 5 array built with n hard disks has a capacity
of n-1 hard disks, featuring a high space utilization ratio. The
data lost on any disk can be recovered based on the parity data.
RAID 5 features high data security, fast read-write, and high
space utilization. However, its disadvantage is that when one
hard disk fails, the overall performance of the whole system
degrades sharply.
Table 25 provides a comparison between the RAID levels.

It is a form of redundancy, where the data on a disk has an

identical copy on another disk. RAID 1 and RAID 1+0 both use
mirroring.

Parity

It is a bit that is added into a byte for checking errors in data

storage and transmission. In the RAID, this method can be
applied to all the disk drives in the array.

Reconstruct

It is the process to reorganize the data on the logical drive after

the RAID level is changed.

SCSI

Abbreviated for Small Computer Systems Interface, it is a wellknown protocol and standard for connecting the computer and
its peripherals.

SCSI disk
status

The SCSI disk has five statuses:

Ready: un-configured, powered-on operable

Online: configured, powered-on operable disk

Binding

Hot Spare: standby powered-on disk for use when one disk
fails
Failed: Failed disk due to errors or put to off-line by the user
with the NetRAID controller
Rebuilding: Disk recovering data from one or more key
logical drive

It is the process to format one or multiple disk modules into one

LUN (logical unit) in the disk array storage system.

Check Primary and Secondary IP

address
Preliminary
Setup

OMM server communicates with BSC, as well as with the upperlevel NMC/LNMC. When BSC and NMC/LNMC IP addresses are on
different network segments, the OMM server has one IP address
for each of them.
Configure two IP addresses whether the OMM server has one or
dual network cards. However, IP address of NMC/LNMC network
segment acts as the primary IP address, and that of BSC
network segment as the secondary IP address of OMM server.
Perform the following procedure to check the Primary and
Secondary IP addresses.

Steps

1. View IP address of each of the dual servers by using

i p c o n f i g command. Upper one is the primary IP address,
and lower one the secondary IP address.
2. When the single network card has multiple IP addresses,
network properties window shows the IP addresses. The one
in the window is the primary IP address, and that in the
advanced option is the standby IP address.
3. Use the i p c o n f i g command to view them. Upper one is the
standby IP address, and lower one the primary IP address.
END OF STEPS.

Result

216

Network Configuration and its verification are complete and the

network is working properly.
