Items to Display as Agenda: (Activities)


- Starter: Begin by writing in your Writer's Notebook an entry on a time that either they
have ever felt bullied, or a bulleted list of different adjectives and traits that they would
think describes a bully.
-As a class: read the first chapter of The Bully by Paul Langan.
-Mini-Lesson on Exposition.
-Students will make predictions about what they think the rest of the story based on their
own experiences and the exposition components that we identified.
Purpose: Opening Statement of Value for Days Lessonthe WHY
The ability to enjoy and be impacted by literature is two fold. One we must understand
our own perceptions that we bring to a text, and second we must understand the
components that make up a novel, so that we think critically about them.
Lesson Procedures: (Introduction, Development, Conclusion)
Introduction:
1. At the start of class the students will respond to the personal response question. (15 min)
2. Students will be given a chance to share some of their personal responses. (10 min)
Development:
1. The class will read the first chapter of The Bully. (15 min)
2. Mini-lesson on Exposition Components. (10 min)
Conclusion:
1. As a class we will identify Exposition Components. (5 min)
2. Students will share their predictions on the rest of the story. (5 min)

Materials and Resources:


1. Writer's Notebook/Place for personal response.
2. Mini-lesson on Novel Exposition Components. (Should be a Hyperlink to PPt)

Before, this class will focus on continuing activity in their Writer's Notebook. At this point the students
should be finished with just about all 25 of their first entries that are due on September 20th. This will be
great opportunity for the students to add to their Writer's Notebook.
During, the students will have an opportunity to participate in guided reading. This will be a great
exercise to help students practice helpful reading strategies. They also will get an opportunity to identify
component of a novel's exposition.
After, the students will be given an opportunity to make predictions and practice text inference.
