Course

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have

taken out of this course is competency U-5-3. (Medication
administration-Calculating medication dosages-Demonstrate
knowledge and ability to safely calculate dosages, concentrations, rates
and volumes)

What I Learned

I learned how to appropriately calculate medication dosages for patient

administration. The course taught me how to convert the doctors order
and available medication to the correct dose for the patient.

Proficiency Rating

I would rate my proficiency in this area as good. During my guided

practice lab, CIA and through the Safe Medicate program I was able to
practice dosage calculations quite thoroughly. I look forward to getting
hands on experience in my clinical so I can further my skills in this
area.

Why It was
Meaningful/
Significant

This is a very significant skill to know when working as a licensed

practical nurse in the future as administering the appropriate
medication dose can prevent medication errors and health and safety
issues.

How I will Apply

this Learning in
Nursing Practice

This skill will be very useful in my upcoming clinical as well as in my

future career as a licensed practical nurse. It will ensure that I am
calculating appropriate medication dosages for clients in whichever
setting I chose to work in.

Course

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have

taken out of this course is competency G 2-4. This competency
includes assessing and managing surgical incisions as well as
facilitating healing through wound care. I learned the theory part of this
through the course's textbook as well as online resources. I gained
hands on experience through the guided practice labs and CIA that I
participated in.

What I Learned

I learned how to complete all tasks in this competency including

dressing changes, drain removal, wound irrigation, wound packing,
removing sutures and staples, etc. These all relate to this specific
competency as it is significant to assess and manage surgical incisions
and wounds appropriately to ensure proper healing.

Proficiency Rating

I would rate my proficiency in this area as good. During my practice

at home, guided practice lab and CIA I was all of the skills of this
competency. I look forward to getting hands on experience in my
clinical practic so I can build on my skills.

diabetes mellitus, hyperemesis gravidarum, hypertensive disorder,
malposition of fetus, placenta previa, pre-term labor and spontaneous
or missed abortion.

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have

taken out of this course is competency K-2-3. This competency
includes having the knowledge to assess and provide care to a woman
who is pregnant and may be experiencing complications.

What I Learned

I learned how to assess and care for a woman who is pregnant and
who may be experiencing complications in her pregnancy. This is
significant to the competency as I feel more confident in assessing and
caring for a woman who is pregnant or experiencing pregnancy
complications with this gained knowledge.

I would rate my proficiency in this area as good. I feel comfortable

with the knowledge that I have gained in the theory portion of this
course and look forward to getting hands on experience in my clinical

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have

taken out of this course is competency L-1-3. This competency
includes having the knowledge to assess and provide care to children
with common pediatric diseases and medical conditions. During the
theory portion of this course my child developed croup for the first
time. Based on her signs and symptoms I was able to apply my
knowledge from this competency and figure out what her condition
was.

What I Learned

I learned how to assess and provide care to children with common

pediatric diseases and medical conditions. This is significant to the
competency as I feel more confident in assessing and caring for a child
with a disease or medical condition with this gained knowledge. With
this gained knowledge in pediatrics I will be able to collaborate more
effectively with my team in patient care.

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have

taken out of this course is competency R-3-2. This competency
includes having the knowledge to assess and plan what type of
preventive activity you will provide a client or community with. During
the theory part of this course a client that I work with in an adult group
home developed gout. With the knowledge that I have gained through
this course and using secondary prevention I was able to support his
dietary needs to assist in preventing his gout from becoming worse.

What I Learned

I learned that there are three different levels of prevention in health

promotion and the significance of each. This is significant to the
competency as I feel more confident in the knowledge I have gained
with each of the levels of prevention and feel that I will make better
assessments in the future on what level of prevention an individual or
community needs in order for me to support them to the fullest.

course and was able to apply this at my current workplace with the
individual I support that has gout.

According to CLPNA one significant learning experience that I have
taken out of this course is competency M-1-5. This competency
includes gaining the knowledge to better understand the individuals
that you will be working with that could have a mental health condition
or illness. During the theory part of this course I worked a relief shift in
an adult group home with an individual that has schizophrenia. Before
this course I had only a basic understanding of what schizophrenia was.
With the knowledge that I have gained through this course I felt I was
able to better support him and felt more comfortable and confident in
my interactions with him during my shift.

What I Learned

I learned that there are several different types of mental health

conditions/illnesses that patients may have. I gained knowledge in
studying these conditions/illnesses and have a better understanding of
them. This is significant to the competency as I feel that I will be more
confident in working with patients with these mental health
conditions/illnesses at my current workplace as well as in the future as
a licensed practical nurse. I feel I will be more supportive and aware of
their needs with this gained knowledge.

I would rate my proficiency in this area as good. I feel comfortable

with the knowledge that I have gained in the theory portion of this
course and feel I was able to understand the individual with
schizophrenia at my current workplace better .
