Its Time to get Thinking

About your Science Fair Project!

New Home ISD will be hosting a science fair again this year. Students will begin looking for or
thinking about what they would like to do for their science fair project on 09/08/16.
The science fair serves to allow students the opportunity to investigate a unique, original
scientific question that suits their particular topics of interests. The best science fair projects
have personal relevance and are questions that can impact daily life.
New Home ISD believes firmly in the benefits of the science fair in developing essential science,
math, English, and technological skills. The New Home ISD Science Fair gives students the
opportunity to continue to develop Scientific Process Skills as outlined in the Science Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for grades 4-12. For a comprehensive list of TEKS
covered and how these standards are assessed on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic
Readiness (STAAR), please contact your students science teacher.
The top students at our district science fair will compete at the Texas Tech University Regional
Science Fair for a trip to the State Science Fair in San Antonio, Texas.

*The final project includes completing a scientific experiment, gathering

results/observations/data, creating a graph to reflect data, drawing conclusions, and assembling
project components into the New Home ISD Science Fair PowerPoint Poster Template.

This year, we are very fortunate to have a brand new research poster printer, thanks to a grant
from Monsanto!
As a result, each major project deadline (see above) will require project
components to be submitted in electronic form, or typed and printed.
All projects should be progressively saved on a flash drive. This is ESSENTIAL to
project completion. Keeping up with project components is the responsibility of
the student.
All project components will be assembled in a New Home ISD Science Fair PowerPoint
template, and submitted electronically to the students science teacher in both PowerPoint and
PDF form.
The Fine Print:
1. Students are responsible for the cost and acquisition of any and all materials necessary
to complete their science fair projects.
2. Students whose projects require growing mold or bacteria will need to have their project
and timeline approved by their science teacher.
3. Students whose projects require input or guidance from a person in a particular field of
study must have their mentor acknowledge (sign) a mentor agreement. These students
are still responsible for completing the project independently.
4. Students whose project involves other living participants (humans, plants, animals, fungi,
and/or bacteria) will have to complete a form acknowledging ethical procedures.
a. Investigations with human participants must have signed release forms from
each participant.
5. Students whose projects involves dangerous chemicals or explosives will be required to
turn in a risk acknowledgement and adult supervision plan before their project will be
approved.
*All forms mentioned can be found on Mrs. Multers Science Website
http://sciencewithmrsmulter.weebly.com or can be obtained from your students science teacher.
