USING THE GRAPHIC DISPLAY CALCULATOR FOR

FUNCTIONS

Many functions questions can be completed using the TI84.

How to Sketch the Graph in the Calculator
Press
then type the given function into the calculator.
Press
and the calculator will show you an image of
the given function.

Changing the Window
To change the window, press
and change the values
of Xmin, Xmax, Ymin and Ymax.

*Default window
Xmin=-10
Xmax=10
Ymin=-10
Ymax=10

*If a domain is given, use the values for Xmin and Xmax

*If a range is given, use the values for Ymin and Ymax

Key Pieces of Information

There are key pieces of information that are often asked
about in Functions questions.
*Maximum/Minimum
*Asymptote
*X-Intercepts (Also known as Zeros)
*Y Intercept
*Points of Intersection

Maximum and Minimum Points
These are the turning points on graphs. (See below)

To find the max or min point of a function after the function
has been graphed...

Press

Scroll down to minimum or maximum and Press
When the calculator asks "Left Bound?", scroll to the left and
press
When the calculator asks "Right Bound?", scroll to the right

Vertical and Horizontal Asymptotes

An Asymptote is a line which the graph approaches, but does
not touch.
*Horizontal lines have equation y= ____
*Vertical lines have equation x=_____

There is no button on the calculator used to find the
asymptote. In order to figure it out. Use the "Trace" button
and scroll left or right and/or change your window in order to
figure out the whole number value that x or y approaches,
but does not touch.

X Intercepts
An X intercept is the point at which a graph crosses the x
axis.

X intercepts are found in almost the same way as maximum
and minimum points. However, instead of scrolling to
"Minimum"or "Maximum", you should scroll down to "Zero".

Y Intercepts
A Y intercept is the point at which a graph crosses the y axis.

There is no special button used to find Y intercepts, so you
will need to "Trace" the point.
Press
and scroll to the point of interest.
Remember that the x coordinate at the Y intercept must be 0!

Points of Intersection
When asked to sketch two functions, you may need to find
the point(s) at which both functions intersect (meet each
other).

SOLUTIONS TO COMPLICATED EQUATIONS (with one

variable)

The solutions to complicated equations with one variable can
ALWAYS be found by using the graphing function on your
calculator.

How?? Take a look at the example below.

SOLVING SIMULTANEOUS EQUATIONS USING THE

CALCULATOR

At times, we will need to solve two equations and two
unknowns. You may do this using the elimination method, the
substitution method or by using the Graphing Calculator.

The example below demonstrates how to use the Graphing
Calculator to solve simultaneous equations.
