DERMO DRILL Powerful, Quick & Safe Driller

Deep water drilling operation is such a significant aspect in oil and gas industry nowadays.
Difficulties in finding new proven reserves on land and too many mature fields operated encourage
oil and gas industry players to shift their choice to offshore. This phenomenon is happening in
Indonesia of which the western part is full of mature fields and is difficult to find new reserves.
Todays oil and gas industry are developed more in the eastern Indonesia, especially to discover
new offshore reserves.
Eastern Indonesia is not well explored yet compared to the western part which has been explored
since 125 years ago because its petroleum system has more complex structure and older
sedimentary rocks with average water depth of 15,000 ft. Eastern Indonesia is considered to be
under-explored, with many basins have not yet been drilled. This problem occurs due to its depth,
poor infrastructure, remote onshore location, and poor understanding of the geological structure.
Yet, history of oil and gas exploration in eastern Indonesia has generated some proven plays of
petroleum production, for instance at Kutai-Tarakan-Makassar Strait, Buton, East Sengkang,
Salawati Basin, Seram, and Arafura-Timor Sea. According to those facts, we can conclude that
eastern Indonesia actually provides huge oil and gas resources, but in the other side it also
provides a high risk exploration which avoids many companies to start the exploration.
High drilling cost, sophisticated technology (including the needs of powerful rig) as well as drilling
safety quality issue have become obvious challenges in offshore drilling operation. Overcoming the
challenges faced above, we come up with the idea of a magnificent rig which is powerful, quick,
and safe named Dermo Drill.
Inspired by a protected reptile due to its endangered population, we adopt the philosophy of
strong shell (carapace) structure of turtle to our rigs basic design. With the hexagonal-shapedstructure on the center of its basis, surrounded by pentagonal structure on its outer side, we create
a rig design with high space efficiency, strong structure, and great storage capacity. Innovasion of
the usage of 3 base legs (commonly 4) results on the lighter total rig weight yet still stable floating
on the water for its hexagonal ponton structure. Rig is able to hold total weight up to 9 lbs and to
give 25 million lbs bouyancy force which makes it floating stably on the water. The space efficiency
and base leg structure save structural cost up to 52%.
Besides, this Dermo Drill is equipped with high-technology equipments which are undoubtedly
able to improve rig ability in drilling operation. Some of them are:
1. Dual Ram Rig System
A system which allows us to reduce drilling time operation, twice lifting capacity (one used as
main derrick to drill, another one as secondary derrick to do several complementary job), and

DERMO DRILL
increases safety level while doing the job. It does not need drawwork, which results on saving
energy for hoisting system.
For derrick specification, the main parameter, which influences its design, is the heaviest
hookload base on the depth of reservoir target (case of East Indonesia Reservoir). Thus, we use
Ram Rig to carry hookload up to 750,000 lbs according to production casing weight as the
longest casing installed. This system is proven saving drilling time up to 20% for exploration
wells and 40% for development wells.
2. Dynamic Positioning System
This system adjusts rig position automatically under external forces (ocean waves reach 4
meters of height, 25 knots of wind velocity, storm, etc.) which give a high trajectory accuracy
and minimization of borehole problem while drilling job is operated.
3. Cyber Drilling System
Cyber Drilling replaces roughneck job by using computerized equipment. This system reduces
people required to operate drilling tools and increases safety level for the employees.
4. Continuous Circulating System (CCS)
In order to maintain borehole stability and create a better ECD management of mud we use
CCS. It is applied in our rig to reduce borehole problem so that we can save cost of drilling
operation. In the other side, mud pumps for mud circulating are designed based on its required
capacity to provide sufficient flowrate, pressure, and power. In our oil rig design, we use mud
pumps which are capable of generating 900 GPM in total based on Moore method, pressure of
6000 psi, and power of 3200 HP based on Jet Velocity method.
5. Cutting Tank Dryer
Aimed to create a better space efficiency, an attempt to combine cutting tank with own drying
system is conducted. This will accelerate the transport processes as well.
For enviromental aspect requirement, conventional waste treatments are used rather than using
any reinjection system for formation water or cutting waste for it is not economic to inject waste
deep into the well and the geological characteristics of eastern Indonesia sea whi ch is not wellrevealed yet. Renewable energy resources are not used because of their unpredictable
effectiveness in offshore condition.
Rig design and equipments above are prototyped using light-but-strong materials. For ponton, we
use styrofoam to create air/water-filled structure so that it can be drowned into the water. On the
other side, for the testing will be conducted on the water, PVC is used as the base legs as well as
deck material due to its stability when receiving load under water. For other material that will be
used as rig utilities or equipments, chic carton (for several facilities) and/or balsa wood (for derrick
and crane) will be our first option to be applied.
By using powerful rig as well as cutting-edge technology, drilling operation job can be done faster.
We guarantee you that Dermo Drill is capable of responding challenges in deep water drilling
operation, particularly in eastern Indonesia, without ignoring safety quality improvement and

economic aspect of deep water drilling operation itself as well.
