On August 15, 2016, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the 783rd
anniversary of the founding of the Order, our confrere, Msgr. Moacyr M. Grechi, the Archbishop
Emeritus of Porto Velho, Rondnia presided at the blessing of the new priory Convento Nossa
Senhora das Dores at So Jos Dos Campos. In attendance were our confrere, Msgr. Joo M.
Messi, the Bishop Emeritus of Barra do Pira / Volta Redonda, the Prior Provincial and his Council,
local Servite communities, professed students from So Paulo, representatives from our communities,
members of the local clergy, lay groups assisted by our friars, members of the Secular Fraternity,

Sorrows, the patron of the priory.

During the celebration a history of the Servite community at So Jos Dos Campos was read. The Servites
arrived in 1955 and established a formation community which was later moved to Curitiba, the Colnia de
Frias Santo Antnio M. Pucci; at present there is a private school and a small priory. With income realized
from the sale of part of the property the Province decided to build a larger priory for the local community, the
provincial curia and possible adult vocations.
The priory has two stories: the ground floor houses the community rooms: kitchen, refectory, laundry, television
room, chapel, library and chapter room) and the Provincial Curia offices. On the upper floor there are twenty
bedrooms and a large meeting room.

: Family Gathering

On August 19-21 we organized the 2016-2017

Family Gathering (a gathering of friars parents) at
Jaya Matha Priory in Bangalore.
These were
unforgettable days for all of our friars.
The gathering began with a simple prayer service at
9:30 AM on August 19. Two of our parents and local
friars lit a lamp. Fra Lourdu Xavier OSM (the
Assistant Master of the Simple Professed) invoked
the presence of God and extended a warm welcome
to our parents. Fra Anand Lourdu Raj, OSM (the
Master of Simple Professed), and Fra Antony Shaji,
OSM organized an Ice Breaking session. All our
parents took an active part and thoroughly enjoyed
the session.
At 11:45 AM we celebrated the
Eucharist. At four oclock in the afternoon we organized fun and games for our parents. It was a high
energy moment. For a brief time, our relatives could ignore their day-to-day worries and become children
once again. They played the games with interest and enthusiasm. At 6:30 PM we began our Mega
Cultural Night. The presence of our parents added to the excitement of the occasion. The Cultural Night
was a hit! The program included folk and Western dances, comedy and a drama that highlighted the daily
sacrifices our parents made for us. This special event brought our first day to a close.
On the second day (August 20, 2016) we made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Health and
the Shrine of the Infant Jesus. We celebrated the
Eucharist and prayed the novena to the Infant Jesus.
After Mass we were given the special blessing of the
Infant Jesus. Our fathers conducted the services and we
prayed for the Order during Mass. All of us were left with
a feeling of spiritual nourishment
In the evening we visited a flower show in Lalbagh. The
beautiful flowers, trees and the musical fountain in
Cubbon Park were a source of inspiration and relaxation
for all of us. We returned home satisfied with the days
activities.
On the third day of our gathering (August 21, 2016) we
celebrated the Solemnity of St. Philip Benizi with our
parents. There was a Eucharistic Celebration in which to our delight neighboring Christian families and
well-wishers joined us. This grace-filled occasion (the Family Gathering) came to an end and our families
went home, happy and satisfied.

P.T.F.: Moving the Library

This past summer was somewhat special for us, the friars of St. Alexis International Formation Community.
Each of us had to choose a time to help in the work of moving the Marianum Pontifical Theological Faculty
library to its new and more spacious home. We were divided into three groups: the first worked from June 27th
to July 16th; the second from July 18th to August 6th; and the third from August 8th to 27th. Under the direction of
the librarian, Fra Silvano M. Daniele, we moved the vast collection of books and the metal files into the new
building and then dismounted the shelving in the old library. In spite of the very strenuous effort involved the
work went off without a hitch. Each group was tireless and as a result each group finished its work before the
designated deadline. Personally, I very much appreciated this experience. Apart from the healthy physical
exercise it provided us the opportunity to work together on a single project. This strengthened our bonds of
fraternity and helped us to prepare for the challenges of the coming school year.

: Meeting and celebrations at Loreto

The Regnum Mariae Secular Institute experienced ten intense days in early August.
The first four days were devoted to the Second International Meeting of Responsible Sisters; there were
two from Mexico, two from the Philippines, the members of the council, the responsible sisters from the
Italian groups, a sister in charge of formation and two representatives.
This second meeting involved review, study,
discussion of our specific charism and
communion with the Servite Family.
The absence of Father Giovanni (our General
Assistant) caused some discomfort but the news
that his health was improving was met with relief
by all.
An expert from another Secular Institute made
an important contribution to our understanding
of and involvement in todays world. Formation
issues were also discussed.
The following days were devoted to a meeting of
our Italian fraternities.
These days were
devoted to retreat and Biblical study we had a
Biblical scholar to assist us. He was a friend
from the diocese of Taranto who understand the Word and the tasks facing lay people in todays Church.
The theme that inspired our study and prayer constantly was MERCY.
Here again the Italian groups enjoyed the assistance of another expert who belongs to a Secular Institute
dedicated to support of those who find themselves in any kind of difficulty. There were occasions of
special joy with those sisters who celebrated their fiftieth and twenty-fifth anniversaries. There was also
joy for those two young candidates who made their PROMISE and embraced definitively the charism of
Regnum Mariae. Our two jubilee celebrations in the Basilica of Our Lady of Loreto were especially moving.
The local Bishop, Msgr. Tonucci was present for the occasion.

: Sharing our Servite Heritage: Mary, Mother of Mercy

The beautiful posters given to representatives of the Order at the

UNIFAS Assembly in June have been used at the parish church of
Holy Rood, Swindon, England. They were the focus for prayer on the
evening of 15 August. These images and others shown on power
point helped us in our reflections. The evening was based on the
prayer service Salve Regina composed by Fra Ignacio M. Calabuig
OSM, translated by Fra Paul M Addison OSM. The evening was
attended by over 100 parishioners and was much appreciated.

: In the footsteps of the Servites, Meeting with

For young Catholics all over the world the Jubilee Year of Mercy was marked by a special event: the
convocation of the World Youth Day in Krakow to celebrate the Jubilee of the Young.
As members of the Servite Family we wanted to join this ecclesial event to a specifically Servite journey. We
visited those places where our Orders Germanic observance flourished in the seventeenth century. On July 25
we left the Marian Center of the Servite Sisters of Reparation (Riparatrici) in Rovigo and reached Innsbruck
where we enjoyed the hospitality of our Priory. Fra Fero M. Bachorik, the Prior of the Innsbruck community
joined our group and traveled with us for the remainder of the journey. On July 26th we went up to the
sanctuary of Maria Waldrast where we celebrated Mass. On the 27th we were on our way to the Czech
Republic. We spent two nights at Nove Hrady a former Servite priory. The memory of Fra Bonfilius M.
Wagner, the last Servite to live there was still alive in the town. On the 28th we headed for the city of Prague
which was already crowded with young people on their way to Krakow. On the 29th we started on the road to
Poland. We spent the night with families in the village of Gdw on the outskirts of Krakow. These families we
generous and hospitable. On the 30th we began our march to the Campus Misericordia where we joined young
people from all over the world and took part in the vigil led by Pope Francis. His words to us were rich and
meaningful and he gave us a special blessing God bless your dreams. The celebration of the Eucharist was
equally moving and as is the tradition at the Masss end he charged all these young people to go out and
proclaim the Gospel. After the final blessing we immediately began our journey back to Italy. On the way we
stopped at our former priory in Trieste where we celebrated the final Mass of our journey (August 1). I would
like to add the words of three of those young people who took part in our pilgrimage. They wanted to share
what they experienced at this splendid event.
fra Giacomo M. Malaguti

A small overview of young people at the

Popes Mass

Young members of the Servite Family at the statue

of St. Philip Benizi on Charles Bridge in Prague

I rediscovered the ability to love and be happy. Not only that, I found again the faith I thought I had lost
because of what was going on in my family. The greatest emotion I felt was at the Popes message to us
young people to believe in our dreams and not allow others to tell us how to live. We are the masters of our
own lives. I am asked: what did I bring home? I brought home a new me, with new values, principles and
different dreams. Listening to what was said and learning what happiness really is allowed me to see the world
with different eyes. I now have a new, big family those who made this journey with me. I will never forget
them in spite of distance.
(Cristina, 17 years old from Agerola Salerno).
The experience of World Youth Day has transformed part of me. I have been able to evaluate and examine
what it means first to be a man and then a Christian. If someone asked me what was most striking in this
experience I would answer without hesitation: opening of the mind, that meeting people with different ethnic
backgrounds, cultures, languages and nationalities has made this opening possible. Another important
element is the difference between this trip and others. From the moment I put on my shoes and went out the
door on this journey I felt different. I did not feel like a tourist, nor did I feel like a guest; I felt like a pilgrim. This
was exactly it! For the first time in my life I felt like a pilgrim and this has made the trip an unforgettable
experience.
(Lorenzo, 20 years old from Follina, Treviso)
The Pope told us a secret for all those who were capable of hearing it. It was the secret of happiness, true
happiness, which we can only find in an encounter with God; it is only with him that we can be ourselves
without a mask, without fear. When I got back from World Youth Day I was happy and I still am. It made me
happy. If someone should ask me what did World Youth Day mean for me, I would answer: My summer
adventure, the chance to meet with so many young people and with God and above all an experience I will
never forget.
(Irene, 17 years old from Trieste)
