Design Concept
The overall design of the fitness center will reflect the diverse
community and bring in natural elements into a modern spaces
for socialization and exercise. The spaces will be used by all
age groups, so the colors will be simple with pops of colors like
yellow and orange to promote energy. Conversation areas will
bring in colors to promote socialization and relaxation. Furniture
pieces will reflect a natural, sustainable environment with hints
of yellow and orange to make all the areas cohesive. The
natural furniture pieces and bright colors will be a welcoming
experience in the reception area. People will be able to build
strength, knowledge, a sense of community, and pride.

Industry Research Questions
The following are the questions to help you research and gain knowledge about this weeks finish
material. State whether you met face to face or did a telephone interview with a professional who is the
manufacturers representative or supplier or researched the manufacturers website. All responses must
be in your own words. Frame two questions of your own at the end on the basis of what you think is
important for your knowledge and practice as an interior designer.
1. What is the name of the company, and what types of products does it represent?

Industry Research Questions
7. How does this company respond to sustainable or green design?
Wallscape Wallcoverings found recycled paper tubes that protected their commercial
wallcovering better, and weighed half of the ineffective conventional packing. Some added
benefits were also fewer deliveries, and best of all, happier customers. It was estimated a
carbon reduction equal to 800 gallons of fuel a year, not to mention tolls, time, traffic, and
scheduling efforts. A quality 20oz wallcovering can have up to an "R5 Value for thermal
resistance". Basically, it keeps the heat in on cold days better than a drywall painted finish
would. Most exterior walls have an "R19" grade insulation inside them. Wallcovering can add at
least 15% to that benefit, thus decreasing the carbon footprint over time. (Wallscape)
8. Describe at least one of the companys new, innovative product introductions.
With their custom printed wallcoverings, there is always new ideas being submitted by
consumers.
9. When did the company begin producing their products?
Wallscape Wallcoverings was started by Paul DiMaggio in 2006. (Wallscape)
10. Do you provide both commercial and residential options?
Yes, we are open to the public and designers.

1. What is the name of the company, and what types of products does it represent?
Kirei is name of the company. They produce Kirei Board, Kirei Bamboo, Kirei Coco, Echo Panel
Panels, Echo Panel Systems, Echo Panel Tiles, Echo Panel Modular Partitions. Most of their
products can be used in cabinetry, walls, and other applications. (Kirei)
2. Where is the manufacturer located?
Kirei is located in Solana Beach, CA.
3. How does the supplier or manufacture work with the interior design profession?
Since 2003, they produced beautiful, sustainable, functional design materials for interior
designers and architects.
4. What is the recommended installation procedure for the material? Are any special techniques or
tools, particular temperature, or other conditions required?
Most standard wood adhesives work with Kirei Board. Kirei Board is very porous and may soak
in some adhesive, so its best to test out the join on a sample before final joining is done. Kirei
Board takes biscuits and splines and can be mitered for a waterfall edge if care is taken to
prevent as much chip out as possible, but an easier method is to cut a rabbet joint. Kirei board is
laid in roughly 5mm 2 plies on the surface, so the rabbets depth can be set to match these
breaks between plies. This method can be more desirable as it requires cutting a joint in only
one of the boards, increases the glue surface, provides support and alignment for the boards,
and the heavily figured Kirei Board does well to hide the joint. Nails/Screws Kirei Board is made
from sorghum straw and a small amount of poplar wood. Kirei screw holding power is less than
wood or plywood of comparable thickness. Screws hold better on the face when they go
through at least one layer of poplar rather than on the edges where they do not engage any
poplar. In high traffic areas or where more screw hold is required small plates of plywood should
be attached to provide a secure mounting plate for hinges or pulls. Finish/Brad nail holes are
easily hidden by the figure of the Kirei Board with by using wood filler or putty. (Kirei)

5. What are the products' performance specifications: fire ratings, acoustic ratings, wear ratings,
stain resistance, and antimicrobial protection? (McGowan 96)

Wall Covering Trends

According to Interior Design Magazines article 10 Trends to
Watch for in 2016, our homes will become our sanctuaries as
the outside world have become busier and more pressured.
Wallcoverings will be bring serenity, simplicity, and
seamlessness to our homes. The trendsetter in colors,
Pantone, introduced two colors of the year, Rose Quartz and
Serenity. Rose quartz is a pastel pink and Serenity is a
powered blue. They both invoke a calmness. Wallcovering
companies have provided their own versions of these two
colors bringing a calmer, natural aspect to wallcoverings.
(Interior Design)

Trends in Flooring
Softer carpet, bigger tiles, wood-looking vinyl, and cheaper versions of
wood floors is some of the current trends in flooring. Manufactures are
creating softer carpets that are also eco-friendly by using newer techniques
and materials. Tiles are becoming larger with new 12x12 tiles hitting the
market. Vinyl flooring is being printed with wood grains to mimic the more
expensive wood flooring. Laminate is becoming more popular in the wood
floor due to its lower cost. All of these trends are building a huge flooring
market that is becoming more and more green. (Umberger)

Trends in Architectural Materials

The trends in architectural materials range from texture to metallic and more. No one wants a
boring flat wall, so designers and manufacturers are coming up with many different textures.
Immersive texture, essentially texture through composition, the unique way a material or mixed
media are assembled together, was strong at a recent UK Design show. Caroline Hough
Design constructs surfaces using handpicked sections of timber that are cast into metallic polished
resins or a sandblasted timber surface with Jesmonite. (Whiteley)
Metallic is still hot and used in many different applications from walls to cabinets. Monochrome is
still trending and metallic materials allow to create some of the monochrome designs.

Trends in Millwork
The popularity of granite is slowing and quartz countertops are becoming more poplar. The
engineered stone is more scratch, stain and heat resistant than granite. The durability and low
maintenance is whats making this material grow in popularity. (Improvenet). You are seeing more
manufacturers producing vibrant color options for all different kinds millwork.

Cost Estimation
The cost estimation for the P-3 (Popular Gray) is a
total of $104.98. The cost for one gallon is $52.49
and the total square footage needed for 517
square feet. One gallon of paint covers 400 square
feet, the project will require two gallons in order to
cover the juice bar walls.

COST ESTIMATION
For the laminate in the Juice Bar, the price per sq. feet is $3.46. The back wall of the Juice Bar is 26.9 sq. feet,
so the total price for the Juice Bar wall would be $110.72.

Cost Estimation for Hardwood Floor

The hardwood floor costs $5.73 per square
feet. The Juice Bar is 517 sq. ft. $5.73 times
517 equals $2,962.41.

Cost Estimation
For the Wilsonart Matte Aluminum, Im using Home
Depots pricing for a similar product. Wilsonart 144 in. x
144 in. Laminate Sheet in Satin Stainless Linearity is
$136.00. The Retail Space counter is 135 in length.
The piece would be large enough to use and split in
different lengths to finish the counter. (Home Depot)

Justifications
The material for the juice bar is hardwood flooring. The dark
color will play off the bright colors and light walls and bright
colors. The flooring will be easy to clean. It will hold up well
from sliding chairs and foot traffic.
For the retail space, the material is a rubber flooring. The
material is a gray color with specks of blues.

Justifications
For the reception area, a stone veneer was chosen to bring out the outdoors
of the Midwest indoors. The material is easy to maintain and brings texture
and the colors shared throughout the design. For the juice bar, the laminate
was brought in due to easy maintenance and its play off the dark floor
chosen. The retail material will continue the outdoor feel with the multicolored wood veneer with the orange color paint. The offices will continue
with the same laminate in the juice bar to bring coherence. In the
social/lounge area, one of the walls will include a cork wall to allow different
fliers and other materials to be posted for different events and other
activities happening in the health club. All the materials were chosen for
their ease of care.

Presentation Board

I have learned a lot from this course. First would be researching and selecting materials for a project. I
learned there are a lot of resources out there for many different materials. It does seem overwhelming
with information. The more you learn about the manufacturers and suppliers Im sure it will be easier to
help pick materials. I realize there are a lot of details you need to remember and look for. I really
enjoyed doing the lighting scenarios to see how light affects different materials. I never really thought
about how it can change the look of materials. I know this will help with not only making choices for my
house but for future classes.
I really enjoyed learning about the sustainable materials. I had heard of LEED, but didnt know much
about it. I learned how materials can provide LEED points for exterior and interior for both commercial
and residential. Im glad to see there is the ARCAT website to help find sustainable materials along with
the USGBC. I think we have been given some great resources for future classes and our careers.
I think the biggest things Ive learned was the attention to detail. The details are needed in finding
materials, details of the project, details needed to be provided to the client and other designers or
works. I had never created a presentation board, so I learned about the details needed to make it. I
think its still a work in progress and I hope to learn more about making the perfect one. I feel this
classes have given some great insight in the design business. I look forward to learning more.
