Introduction
A Level
The General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level), or A Level, is the 'gold standard' of CIE
qualifications. A Levels are one of the most recognised qualifications around the world. They are accepted
as proof of academic ability for entry into universities, institutes of higher education and military schools and
they are equally important for young people moving into employment.
A Levels have exactly the same value in admitting students to all universities as their UK equivalent. They
are also accepted as entry qualifications by universities of the European Union, on a par with the French
Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, etc. Good A Level grades can be a key to admission for all the world's
major anglophone universities. University course credit and advanced standing is often available in countries
such as the USA and Canada where entrance to university takes place after only 12 years of education.
Good grades in carefully chosen A Level subjects can result in up to one full year of credit.
AS Level
The General Certificate of Education (Advanced Subsidiary Level), or AS Level, was introduced in 2000. It
represents the first half of an A Level course but may also be taken as a free-standing qualification.
AS Levels are accepted in all UK universities and carry half the weighting of an A Level. For example,
students may be admitted with suitable grades in two A Levels and two AS Levels (in place of 3 A Levels).
Details of the tariff operated by the UK Universities and Colleges Admission Service, are given on the UCAS
website.
Institutions outside the UK which offer credit for A Levels can be expected to offer half that amount of credit
for AS Levels.
AICE Diploma
The Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) was first introduced in 1996 as a broader-based
alternative to A Levels. AICE is a Diploma which is awarded to students passing enough A and AS level
examinations to earn six credits in subjects chosen from three groups: mathematics and science, arts and
humanities, and languages. AS level passes count for one credit while A level passes count for two.
Therefore AICE students obtain credit equivalent to passes in at least three A Levels.
