House & Home

By A L A N FET T E R MA N

From the Philadelphia skyline

to a fieldstone farmhouse, our region
is a microcosm of architectural
wonderment. A cross section of styles
and types are readily found across
the land, including federal, Victorian,
modern, cape, English Tudor, art-deco,
row-home, condo, trailer, log cabin,
and more.
If youve ever tried to define the style
of your own home, you know that style
can be a vague and puzzling term.
Architectural style is the vocabulary we
use when we classify buildings according
to their appearance, structure, materials,
and historic period. The words origin
in part is associated with the Latin
word stimulus, which essentially is
something that affects something else
that element that sparks attention or
idea. Its a mighty fine asset and aesthetic
when architectural diversity is peppered

about the land. Its telltale of our diverse

cultural melting pot stoked by centuries
of interactive and progressive living.
Im a great fan of a well-made
structure and the integration of ground
plan, layout, construction, and design.
Big or small, its about rendering the
best of outcomes for the best of costs
and efforts available. Ive lived in
a trailer, rancher, bungalow, town-twin,
condo, farmhouse, and modern home
to name a few. One cherished home,
a flat roof Malibu-Ranch, was encased
in floor to ceiling windows that welcomed
nature inward for all to enjoy. The snow,
wind, and rain all experienced from
a fireside internal view, a fine home
for sure. But being built in the 1950s,
far from energy efficient.
On the other end of the spectrum,
I owned a quintessential farmhouse
built in 1714 that was constructed over

1 0 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / S E P T E M B E R O C T O B E R 2016

a spring. Bubbling basement water and

high humidity were always at hand. It
was far from modernizedrather rustic
and riddled by age. With heavy 20-inch
stonewalls and deep windowsills,
historical ambiance was abundant, and
the cold winds of winter could be readily
felt running wild across the floors, not
unlike the mice.
I also lived in an old Doylestown
twin built circa 1890 with random width
pumpkin pine floors and 9-foot ceilings,
a gem in many ways but the small thin
lot was always a challenge, and all sounds
above a whisper were shared with
nearby neighbors.
Whether rented or owned, no matter
the style, shape, size, pros and cons, the
bottom line is we are blessed in this
region with great diversity and variety
when searching for a house. And as we
find our way forward on the yellow brick

road of life, one cant help appreciate
the diverse architectural vistas and
options speckled along the way. Truly,
a house is the cornerstone from which
family, neighborhood, community, state
and union is formed and, in the end,
theres no place like home. | r

PUNKS
GROWING
UP
ITS KIND OF BEEN A LONG TIME
COMING BECAUSE OUR LAST RECORD
CAME OUT 12 YEARS AGO.

To say that we have not heard any new

music from iconic southern California
four-piece band the Descendents
in a while would be an understatement.
Back in 2004 was the last we had
of a taste of new music, but earlier
this summer, they returned with
Hypercaffium Spazzinate, a collection
of new songs that demonstrates the
punk icons have not lost a step after
all this time. I caught up with front man
Milo Aukerman to chat about the new
record, his midlife career change,
as well as the personal limitations
of his songwriting subjects.

15

MUSIC

Yeah, its kind of been a long time

coming because our last record came
out 12 years ago, Aukerman details as
he dives into the story behind the bands
seventh studio album. Planning began
around 2011, and not long after, the ideas
started rolling in. Outside occupations
with each bandmate played a part in
slowing down the process that ended
up finishing in early 2016.
Were really happy with how it turned
out, observed Aukerman.
For decades now, there has been
a constant on/off cycle with the
Descendents due in large part to
Aukermans day job as a biochemist.
The band, the songwriting, touring
everything was seen in large part as
a hobby to the singer to help relieve
the stresses of life.
I initially was involved in music and
figured that I needed a backup career
because music is so unstable, Aukerman
recounts. Science seemed to fit the bill
for me because it did really give me
a lot of intellectual stimulation.
Such was the case until a recent
change caused careers and hobbies
to flip flop. After years of working
in the industry, Aukerman was laid
off from his employer, the chemical
conglomerate DuPont. Surprisingly,
the situation was not a complete loss,
as the job and environment had
started to sour.
I kind of need a break from science
right now just because the last few
years at DuPont were kind of miserable
for me, he said. With his immediate
job troubles behind, Aukerman set
his focus on turning music and the
Descendents into his full time gig.
I guess I had it all backwards, because
in the end the science was the unstable

thing and the music was a more stable

career for me.
Aukermans pent-up frustration from
having lived the corporate life led to
a renewed motivation to write songs
again. With music being his outlet
from the world around him, the subject
matter for many of the tracks on the
Descendents albums are from deeply
personal views and emotions.
Sometimes those frustrations are
about the little things, and sometimes
theyre extremely big and fill you with
despair, explained Aukerman. Thats
all the stuff that music helps me to deal
with. I think thats why our songs tend
to be about personal subjects. We dont
tend to write about the world, we write
about our individual lives, because
thats what really frustrates people in
the end, the day-to-day bullshit that
people deal with.
A major recurring theme throughout
the record stems from drummer Bill
Stevensons health scare. In 2009, he was
diagnosed with a massive brain tumor,
and in 2010 it was surgically removed.
I started writing songs to document
that, recalls Aukerman. Two of the
songs on the record are about his
recovery and his struggles.
Aukerman was not alone in writing
about this moving event, as the other
three members contributed, as well.
These selections include Comeback Kid
and Smile penned by Aukerman, and
Victim of Me, written by Stevenson.
All three are examples of the Descendents
mixing their signature quick, upbeat
punk songs with a bit more mature
substance within.
No stone is left unturned when it
comes to the songwriter matter, even
at this point in the bands life.

1 6 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / S E P T E M B E R O C T O B E R 2016

MUSIC

I mean Ive touched on all of it,

Aukerman observed. This includes the
brighter side of life, as well. He goes on
to describe a tune he wrote for his wife
as a complete, over-the-top romantic
love song. And then theres Light
A Candle an aptly-titled number that
takes on a double meaning of sorts.
It combines romance with farting,
Aukerman explained. Ive always got
to have at least one song about farting,
so that was it.
Unfortunately, the two aforementioned
tracks did not make it onto the album.
However, the writing session turned
out to be so productive that the group
ended up with enough material for two
releases, Hypercaffium Spazzinate
and an EP titled Spazzhazard. Between
the two, there are 21 new songs from the
Descendents, and a lengthy collection
of B-sides, as well.
radiusmag.com

There are probably an additional

1415 songs that are just complete
outtakes.
With glowing reviews of the album,
the rejuvenated Descendents are
prepping for life on the road again.
The already lengthy catalog of hits
and crowd favorites makes adding
new work a little more difficult, but
its a welcomed challenge.
Thats the main thing for us, said
Aukerman. Dont just play the old
ones, play some new ones, as well.
Be sure to catch the Descendents
as they make their way to Philadelphia
on Oct. 13 at the Electric Factory. | r

Art meets music

at alternative space
Canal Music Studios
By ST EVE CHE R N OS K I

Hidden behind Lambertvilles Mill

Ballet School and Rojos Roastery is Canal
Music Studios, an alternative creative
destination and performance space where
art meets music. Founders Adrienne
Walsh and George Laks had been
teaching music locally since 2006, before
deciding to expand and build what is now
Canal Music Studios in 2013.
Although George, who has toured
with Lenny Kravitz since the 1990s,
eventually relocated to Los Angeles,
Adrienne has seen her pool of music
students increase, from 60 to 160,
and has hired more instructors to
accommodate the pupils, whose ages
range from four to 84.
Hallway art by the nonprofit Project
Rooms adorns this multipurpose
innovation space, and continues until
reaching the soundproof room containing
a grand piano, drum kit, public address

system, backline, microphones and

amplifiers. The surrounding artwork
fuses with the musical experience, and
is intentional; the rotating art in the
studios is geared to inspire seasoned
musicians and budding students
of music alike.
I wanted a creative spark here,
Walsh emphasized. I felt that art and
music go together, so ideally the writing
process could start here, and the finished
product could be played here.
That creative spark was partially
inspired by the collaboration
Appalachian Spring between modern
dancer and choreographer Martha
Graham, with composer and conductor
Aaron Coepland. This melding of the
two is perhaps the signature of Canal
Music Studios.
Walsh regularly performs first violin
in the Allentown Symphony Orchestra

and section violin at Symphony in C at

Rutgers-Camden, while also freelancing
with multiple groups, including the New
Jersey State and Center City Operas.
Through these experiences, she has built
up a network of instructors who play
professionally and possess advanced
musical training.
One student, prodigy pianist Yash
Pazhianur, traveled with one of Walshs
teachers, New York concert pianist
Elisha Abas, to Changsha, China, where
they performed a concert with 1,500
people in attendance. Pazhianur has
now received a composition scholarship
to Juilliard.
We want to take committed students
to a professional level, and provide

Walsh said. If a student doesnt want

maintained by the Project Rooms, an

experimental gallery that hosts rotating
seasonal exhibitions. The shows take
place in five different rooms within
the studios expansive area, usually
beginning with an artist reception on
a weekend evening, and running for
three to four months. They are curated
by Jane LaFarge Hamill, a New York
City-educated painter, who moved to
Lambertville in 2012, along with local
art historian Allison Richard.
LaFarge Hamill met Walsh shortly after
the studios opened, and the two agreed
on the concept for how artwork should
integrate with the musical process.
We ask five artists to each take
a room within the space and do
whatever they wanted with it, said
LaFarge Hamill. We show everyone
from artists who have been working
for 30 years without showing their

pieces to anyone, to those who show

internationally, said LaFarge Hamill.
One rare solo art show at the
studios encapsulated the small-town
vibe of Lambertville with threedimensional claymation. Spectral
was an exhibition of photographs
by Simon Allen, who is in the process
of creating a stop-motion animation
film about a tiny fictional town named
Mothers Peak. For inspiration, Jane
and Allison connected Allen with the
Lambertville Historical Society, which
provided him with older neighborhood
photographs of the city. From there,
he designed neighborhood sets from
the photographs, and took closeup snapshots of his own miniature
carefully-constructed street scenes.
The end result combined the finished
clay sets displayed on strategically
placed instruments with the original

2 2 / R A D I U S M A G A Z I N E / S E P T E M B E R O C T O B E R 2016

next to Allens renditions.
Our curatorial process is based
on open access and exposure. We
want to make sure The Project Rooms
is a watering hole, where local artists
get exposure and viewers can gain
access to artists who might not be seen
elsewhere in town, wrote LaFarge
Hamill and Richard.
Perhaps what separates this northern
Lambertville locale from other galleries
is that it serves as a mecca for both artists
and musicians. The music students have
various styles of instruction to choose
from and have multiple opportunities
to showcase their learning, like making
the cuts at the esteemed Princeton
Festival Piano Competition, performing
two choral recitals at Trinity Episcopal
Church, or rock n rolling at a special
student show at Havana in New Hope.
radiusmag.com

The newer jazz ensemble rehearses at

the Studios on Saturday mornings, and
are in the process of looking for an event
that fits their style. And artists can even
contact LaFarge Hammil and Richard
through a submission page on the
website if they have ideas for submitting
work or exhibitions.
Theres a flock of creators these
days, both aspiring and accomplished,
experiencing Canal Music Studios in
different ways. But Adrienne Walshs
dream is clear throughout the bustle:
to inspire a new generation of local
artists and musicians. | r

A Sense of Place:
Harry Boardman
By JEA N N ET T E MOS E R- OR R

Harry Boardman is a Bucks County

native who is the son of a scientist
and a clown. That could be part of
why Boardman is such a diverse artist.
He is a graduate of the Pratt Institute,
with a BFA in illustration. Boardman
moved around for a while and settled
back in the area. He has, from an early
age, always wanted to be an artist.
From age four through his entire
education, he was involved in art
classes and programs.
When asked to describe his style,
Boardman views it as a cross between
Wassily Kandinsky and Van Gogh.
His work has a bold outline to it, as
he uses ink to define the work, and then
adds the color pastels. There is a clear
strength of line, but also a painterly
quality to the work. The subject matter
has a wonderful sense of whimsy.
Boardman doesnt take his work too

seriously. He wants his art to be relatable

while still being unique. He feels that
there is plenty of work out there that
is has deep meaning or controversial.
I like to be approachable, explained
Boardman. I just appreciate what is
around me, and I want to take people
along with me. I like to think that my
piece is the piece that goes in peoples
homes and they just enjoy it.
Boardman believes there is a strong
sense of place and continuity to his
work. This is apparent in his piece
Homage to an Overflowing Ditch.
Nothing pleases him more than for
people to look at one of his paintings
and know that they have driven by that
barn or seen that field of goats. His
paintings with animals capture the all
of their personalities and quirks. One
can clearly see the inquisitiveness of the
goats or the aloof attitude of the sheep.

His main medium is oil pastel, which

is not widely used. It is a stick that has
pigment embedded in wax. The colors
vary in opacity and transparency, and
the sticks are used directly on the
board. Boardman takes great pride in
the fact that he makes all of his pieces
himself from start to finish.
The process begins with cutting and
preparing the hard board. He then draws
the image in ink, adding the oil pastels,
and mixing the colors directly on the
board. Boardman also builds all of his
own frames for his work. By creating the
entire piece, he has the freedom to
select sizes that suit the subject matter.
He also created some very lively
and fun illustrated promotional
pieces for the local Souderton
event Concert Sundaes. The event
spotlights a different ice cream flavor
at each concert. And Boardman created

Boardmans strong sense of place
translates into a commitment to the
revitalization of the Main Street of

Boardman, an artist in glass and
jewelry, sold their home and purchased
an old cigar factory at 105 N. Main St.
in Souderton. They are renovating
it to be their gallery, studio, event
venue, and home.
One of their goals is to bring
business and vitality to the main street
of Souderton.
Every little main street wants to try
to revitalize, opined Boardman. You
dont have anything like Doylestown,

have dinner and come to the gallery.
Boardman is also involved in
producing the Souderton Art Jam,
held the last Saturday in September.
It features fine art, crafts, food trucks,
live music and a wine and beer tent.
Harry Boardman embodies a sense
of place for the Delaware Valley region,
both through his art and through his

Danny Degennaro Memorial

Foundation Provides a Leg up
for Local Aspiring Musicians
By R OL L I E JON ES

Danny DeGennaro had some

amazing friends.
While his musical talent is evident
in the soulful songs found on the Danny
DeGennaro Memorial Foundation
(DDMF) website, it is clear that his real
talent was in bringing people together.
When the world lost Danny in 2011
at the age of 56, his friends banded
together to create a website to help
track down his killers. According to
Edward Mero, president of the DDMF,
The site quickly became a tribute
forum for all those who had been
touched by Danny and his music over
the years, which then morphed into the
not-for-profit foundation it is today.
Although Danny traveled the country
as a professional musician, playing with
the Billy Squier Band and the Grateful
Dead off-shoot Kingfish, Mero noted that
Danny always came back to his roots in

Bucks County, where had deep ties with

the community. And this community,
stunned by his death, decided to honor
his legacy by supporting young local
artists. In partnership with Bucks
County Community College, DDMF
awards annual scholarships to two
aspiring artists to attend a semester
at the college.
Even more importantly, the student
is provided with the opportunity to
perform live with professional musicians,
and free studio time to create a demo.
Its a chance for these aspiring
student musicians to hone their craft
and get to the next level Mero said.
In return, the recipient is asked to learn
one of Dannys 100 original songs and
play it live at featured events.
Past recipients of the Danny D
scholarship include Jeremiah Snyder
(2015), and Emma Spies (2016). Both

In 2015, the first music scholarship funded by the Danny DeGennaro Foundation (DMF)
was awarded to Jeremiah Snyder, a Bucks County Community College (BCCC) student.

COMMUNITY

Lisa Bouchelle, a loyal member of the Danny DeGennaro family.

Snyder and Spies will be backed

by seasoned musicians at upcoming
events on the BCCC campuses in
Bristol, Newtown and Perkasie, in
September and October.
Snyder, who hails from Pipersville,
Pa, graduated from Central Bucks
East High School in 2011. Thanks to
the Danny D scholarship, Jeremiah
has been able to record in studio with
veteran artists, and play several venues.
Spies is a dedicated student and
Army Reservist who is working her way
through college. Her soulful sound made
a big impression on the foundation. Also
featured at the events is Bucks County
native Alexa Korogodosky and her band
The Walldos. Korogodosky also wowed
foundation members when they heard
her by chance on Radio Bucksso much
so that they decided to cut a video for
her song Take a Chance on Me.
Finally, local legends such as Ernie
White and Friends of Rio, and Jim
Mitchell and the Repeat Offenders,
will be taking the stage at the Creative
radiusmag.com

Inspiration Tribute to the Allman Brothers

on Oct. 22 at the Zlock Performing Arts
Center at the main BCCC campus in
Newtown. That event will include a preconcert VIP reception hosted by Irish
Rover Station House Catering and Sand
Castle Winery.
Proceeds from these events will
go toward continuing to support local
young artists and musicians. The DDMF
has raised over $31,000 in two years,
and continues to seek local students
who could use a helping hand to reach
for their creative dreams. Hosting these
events is a large part of that, providing
the young artists with exposure, playing
time and mentorship. Mero hopes
more parents of students will see the
importance of these opportunities and
get involved, and those interested in
contributing can do so through the
webpage or at the events themselves. | r

El Tule in Lambertville:
Exotic, Innovative Peruvian
Cuisine Served Family-style

Its easy to pass El Tule by at 49 N.

Main St. in Lambertvillethe restaurant
front is attractive but subdued, and
the spinning red, white and blue pole
display outside of Joes barbershop
next door draws the eye.
But a quick glance reveals the lovely
outdoor courtyard at El Tule leading to
the modern, airy dining room that has
helped the restaurant draw a strong
following over the past seven years,
as has is its sister restaurant, Quinoa,
in Doylestown.
More interesting is that while billing
itself as a Mexican/Peruvian restaurant,
the eatery bears little resemblance
to any of the excellent Mexican food
joints around.
Its more of an instant Peruvian
cultural immersion, where traditional
cuisine meets modern fusion, all served
up by friendly, low-key relatives. In fact,

everyone at El Tule seems related to

someone else working there. Chef and
Co-Owner Said Anguiano is originally
from Zacatecas, Mexico, and is the
brother-in-law of Co-Owner Jack
Egoavil, whose extended family keeps
El Tule going and homey. Jacks mother
is also a self-taught chef, and traveled
with Anguiano to Peru for additional
professional and technical training.
Says Egoavil, It was hard at first,
but weve had a really good response
from people, and were grateful.
While the decor, music and staff
seem straight out of the Andes, dont be
fooledthe Mexican portion of the menu
may serve as a familiar reference point
for those new to Peruvian cooking, but
its fresh, for real, and on-target.
Take the Guacamole: typically
involving a simple recipe, good
guacamole is not hard to find in our

area, but at El Tule, its smooth and

scrumptious, without overuse of garlic,
pepper, or onions, and sporting
a seemingly random tuft of fresh-cut
cilantro. Put simply, they nailed it.
Likewise, the Ceviche alone would
have been worth the trip. If youre
new to ceviche, think South American
sushi. Without going into a history
lesson, there was a huge Chinese
and Japanese influx into Peru in the
1800s, and while their numbers today
are relatively small, their influence
on Peruvian cuisine remains oversized.
In fact, at its best, Peruvian cooking
is the original fusion cuisine, combining
the best of South American and
Asian food.
Ceviche is popular in every country
in Latin America where theres a beach.
Usually made from fresh raw fish cured
in citrus juices and chile pepper, in Peru

its an art form and national treasure.

Peruvian ceviche usually combines
chunks of fish marinated in freshly
squeezed lime juice with onions, chiles,
corn and sweet potato.
At El Tule, these ingredients all make
an appearance in their multiple versions
of ceviche, but one variety, Ceviche
Caratillero (foodtruck ceviche) sees
the classic corvina fish topped off with
fresh, flash-fried calamari. The fish
is reminiscent of fresh sushimi, with
a delicate, but firm, texture and an
ever-present, almost ethereal presence
of lime. Its regarded as the best ceviche
around, hands-down.
The Palta a La Reina is another
standout appetizer. Its made by filling
an avocado with either shrimp, chicken
or vegetables marinated with fresh
cilantro-lime dressing, and served
with red onions and tomatoes.

The Yuquitas Fritas with Huancaina

Cream is a favorite, as well. Yucca is
a common staple of Caribbean and
Latin American cooking, and more
often than not may be served up on
the bland and overcooked side.
But El Tules Yuquitas were
essentially yucca french fries, served
with a natural Andean cream made
from milk, cheese and yellow peppers.
Pommes frites, Peruvian-styleso
tasty that they disappear quickly.

It was hard at first, but weve

from people, and were

The food truly is as well-presented

as it is prepared.
The traditional Chicha Morada
beverage is made from corn with
pineapple and apple peel. It was
a beautiful bright purple color,
fruity and crisp.
One interesting entre is the Aji de
Gallinashredded chicken in a creamy
bright yellow pepper sauce served
over slices of baked potatoes and white
rice. It is tasty and comforting, with
enough of a pepper edge to keep it
all interesting.
Another one to try is the Carapulcra,
a Peruvian stew with its roots in Inca
history. Made from dried potatoes,
pork and traditional Peruvian spices,
it was served with yucca strips and
salsa criolla. The Lomo Saltado is
another memorable dish. Created with
tender slices of skirt steak stir-fried

with red peppers and Peruvian corn,
it showcases the chefs versatility.
The Chaufa de Mariscos y Quinoa
is another outstanding entree that, along
with the Lomo Saltado, underscored
the fusion of South American and
Asian cuisine. Stir-fried in a wok with
quinoa, calamari, octopus, shrimp,
scallions, sesame oil and eggs, it is
an epicurean dream.
Desserts like the fresh dulce de leche
creations whipped up fresh are off the
charts and rich.
We were the first to bring Peruvian
food to the area, and the fact that it
was taken so welltheres nothing
better than that, said Egoavil. Were
breaking barriers.

El Tule has also received some

recognition along the way, starting with
a 54 Magazine article in 2012, followed
by a favorable New York Times story
and New Jersey Magazine mention,
along with scoring on the Hunderton
Happening list in the Mexican and
BYOB categories.
El Tule definitely breaks the barrier
between Mexican, Peruvian and Asian
cuisine, and in doing so, stands out.
And if youre still on the fence, coming
this fall is All-You-Can-Eat-Ceviche and
Tacos every Tuesday, and Locals Nigh
on Wednesdays.
El Tule is as friendly as it is unique. | r
