VIBRATORY CONVEYORS
For more than half a century, Renold AJAX
Vibrating Conveyors have been used to transfer
granular and bulk materials. The systems can
be modified to perform many functions, like
screening, scalping, drying, cooling, grading and
dewatering. The conveyors are designed for
rugged heavy-duty applications and will provide
years of continuous trouble-free operation. Our
engineers can design a conveyor to meet
specific needs in widths from 6 to 60 and in
lengths up to 70.
VIBRATORY TABLES/PACKERS
AUTOMATED WEIGH FILL SYSTEMS
Renolds custom engineered Vibratory
Tables/Packers provide more material in less
space while filling and weighing materials
simultaneously. Our units provide the proper
vibration, eliminating voids and increasing the
density of materials being packaged. We
utilize a packer with our packaging systems to
get 20% to 50% more material in the
container. In addition, the units can continue
to weigh during the vibration cycle.

Renolds filling stations are unique because they are always

weighing. In addition, they provide proper bulk materials
compaction, resulting in:

BRUTE FORCE FEEDERS

Renolds Vibratory Feeders meter bulk
materials into the process at rates of
1,000 lbs. per hour through 1,400 TPH.
Our feeders are custom designed to
meet application needs. Rugged
equipment produces the consistent
flow rates and trouble-free operation
needed for efficient processing.

The Renold AJAX R/KBM and R/KBC Series is the most economical vibrator
drive available in the North American market today. No other electric vibrator
motor delivers more value and quality per pound of force output. The new
KBM series matches competitive mounting holes. Our full line consists of
models operating at frequencies of 900, 1200, 1800 and 3600 RPM.
Eccentric weights can be manually adjusted to vary the centrifugal force
from 0 through 100%. A suitable model can be supplied for most any type
application or environment, and are rated for continuous operation.
Special features include: foot mounting, cast metal housing, Oring groove
sealed end covers, increased corrosion protection, external ground lug
with CE certification and optional 304SS end covers.
NOTE: 700 and 1000 RPM is also available, consult factory.

Applications
The AJAX R/KBM and R/KBC Series Rotary Electric Vibrators are specifically
suited for flow aids, densification, shake-out and metering of solid materials.
Examples defined are related to Brute Force designs.

Flow Aids (page 3)

Metering or Transporting (page 5)

When moisture, temperature or grain size of material

causes irregular flow through bins, hoppers, chutes, etc.,
vibration can be introduced to solve problems. AJAX
vibrators break up bridging in storage vessels, keeping
material in continuous motion and thus minimizing friction
along the transporting body. As a general rule, both
1800 and 3600 RPM are utilized pending the type
of application.

Dual counter rotating vibrators attached to feeders,

screeners, sorters and conveyors will meter and transport
materials. Both vibrators synchronize producing a
rectilinear motion at 30 degrees to the flow path. Special
consideration must be given to fabricating a rugged
mounting drive triangle as the vibrators must be attached
to the same one-piece mounting structure. Here, 1200
and 900 RPM are generally the recommend frequency
choices. Special attention must be given to the structures
moment of inertia when exceeding 1200 RPM. A dual
magnetic starter having a single starter with two overloads
is required for operation
(refer to page 10 diagram).
Other enhancements
include: variable speed control for tuning the flow rate or
fast/dribble feed control and
dynamic braking to cut off
the flow immediately.

Densification or Shakeout (page 4)

Dual counter-rotating vibrators
produce a rectilinear motion,
which is ideal for increasing the
density of material in a
container. The result is
20-50% more material in the
container and a reduction in
containers, warehouse space
and freight costs. The same
principle in reverse will
shake-out foundry molds. Refer
to the densification chart for
recommended frequencies and
G-level. When using vibrators
in a shake-out mode, add
one (1.0) G-level to the
densification chart.

Why buy competitive brands

whose services offer
limited experience using
vibrators. Renold conducts
personal or group training
sessions reviewing the
dynamics of designing
vibratory structures critical
to sizing vibrators.

Flow Aids
Find the volume of a conical vessel:
V = 1.0472 x 7.794 ft x (52 + (5 x 1) + 12)
= 1.0472 x 7.794 ft x (31)
= 253 cu ft

Model selection or sizing of Renold AJAX electric motor

vibrators for bins, hoppers and silos is based upon a
ratio of product weight in the sloped wall portion of the
vessel and the force output (Fo) of the vibrator. The
general rule should be 10:1, i.e., ten pounds of product
to one pound of force output. Generally, the following
frequencies are used as flow aids:
Frequency

3600

1800

irregular flow

content, sticky,

Find the weight

of product:
W = 253 x 33 pcf
= 8,349 lbs

Most bins and hoppers only require one (1) vibrator

mounted 1/3 the total sloped distance from the
discharge as shown. When product is very difficult to
flow or the capacity in the sloped portion exceeds 25
tons, two or three vibrators may be required.
The vibrators should be staggered at 90 degrees
about the initial vibrator at 1/4 intervals thereafter.
When in operation each vibrator should not be
permitted to turn on simultaneously, but rather
intermittently. The use of an on/off timer will be required.

Determine the volume (V) of product in the sloped wall.

[Conical Shape ]
V = 1.0472 x vertical height x (R2 + (Rr) + r2)
Where: R = radius of the cone at the inlet
r = radius of the cone at the discharge

[Square or Rectangular Shape ]

V=

vertical height

x (B +

Bb + b)

Where: B = area of the pyramid at the inlet

b = area of the pyramid at the discharge
Convert all dimensions to feet. Multiply the calculated
volume by the bulk density of the product to find the
total weight.

or Shake-Out

Refer to the chart below and scan the density column

with respect to type of material. We find the optimum
frequency is 1200 RPM @ 2.5 Gs.

Vibration is created by applying an alternating force to

an isolated mass. The two critical factors when
determining the proper vibration are amplitude and
frequency. Amplitude is the distance through which the
mass is moved from one extreme to another. Frequency
is the number of times the mass is moved in a given
period of time (RPMs). G-level is referred to as the ratio
of force required to change the motion of a body
(mass). Whereby, mass resists any change in motion.

Twt = 850 lbs + 400 lbs + 2500 lbs

deck
vibrators load
= 3750 lbs
If G-level equals Fo divided by Twt, then
Fo = G-level x Twt
Find the vibrator Fo: Fo =

2.5 Gs x 3750 lbs

2 vibrators

= 4687.5 lbs, each vibrator

When dual vibrators are used to produce a rectilinear
motion (up/down) for densification, we can calculate the
size/model of a vibrator by knowing the material and its
bulk density.

Refer to the 1200 RPM chart (page 8) and scan down

the force output column and match the Fo calculated.
We find the vibrators should be R/KBC-3-400-6. The
maximum Fo of each vibrator is 5628 lbs. Therefore,
the eccentric setting should be set at the following
percentage:

Fo x C
Stroke =

Twt x f2
Fo

G-level =

( resultant
stroke )

%=

4687.5
5628

Twt
= 83%
NOTE: The energy level of 2.5 Gs is very large, and in
this case we calculated for a full load vibration cycle. If
the container requires vibration at various steps during
the filling process, the eccentric setting should be
reduced to match the first vibration setpoint. Side
restraints may be required to contain the pallet/
container to prevent walking off the vibratory deck, as
the flow into the box may not be directly into the center.

Pre-Design
Example: Find the vibrator size for a packer needed to
densify a 48 square container with pallet having a
target weight of 2500 lbs. The material is a granular
powder @ 60 pcf. Assume the vibratory deck weight
to be 850 lbs., and vibrators weighing 200 lbs each.

Metering or Transporting
When dual motor vibrators are directly attached to a
trough it is referred to as a Brute Force design. It is
very simple to calculate the necessary vibrator
size/model by finding the required force output (Fo), if
you can project the desired stroke. The stroke, also
referred to as amplitude (peak to peak), is the resultant
action produced by these vibrators when properly
isolated. The following chart depicts the maximum
stroke electric vibrators should operate at a specific
frequency in a brute force design. As a rule of thumb,
the feed rate will most likely be considered to be
approximately 35 FPM.

Fo = 3123 lbs minimum for each vibrator

Refer to the 1200 RPM chart (page 8) and scan down
the force output column and match the Fo calculated.
We find the vibrators should be R/KBC3-350-6, having
a maximum force output of 3988 lbs. Since the
calculated Fo needs to be 3123 lbs, the vibrators
can be set to the following percentage.

Fo x C

the total force output of the vibrator(s)

a constant having a numerical
value of 70470.91
total weight, combined value of the
trough, vibrator(s) weight and load

NOTE: In this pre-design there were assumptions made

such as trough and vibrator weight. Always re-check
your calculations with real values.

Pre-Design
Example: Find the vibrator size for a feeder needing to
deliver 75 TPH of sand @ 100 pcf. Assume the pan
width to be 30 wide and 72 long. Also for this example
assume the trough weight is 495 lbs and 1200 RPM
vibrators @ 150 lbs each.

= 78%
Remove the end covers and change the eccentric
percentage (page 10). Keep the covers off and start the
vibrators (momentarily) to verify each vibrator is counter
rotating, i.e. one running CW and the other CCW.
BE SAFEinsure there isnt any person or obstacle
near the vibrators during this check. Once rotation is
correct, disconnect power, and install both end covers.
The equipment is ready for final testing.

Find the depth of product flow

75 TPH =

Where: Fo =
C =

2Fo x 70470.91

60 sec. x 1.0 x 30 wide x depth x 100 pcf x 35 FPM

144 in.2 x 2000 lbs

Depth = 3.43, your sides on the trough should be

a minimum of twice this value.

See page 10 (Setting Eccentric Weights) for mounting

orientation of vibrators on feeders.

Setting of Eccentric Weight

Junction Box
Lifting Lug

If adjustments are made:

insure both ends of the vibrators eccentric weights equal the same percentage value
when utilizing dual vibrators in a configuration to produce a rectilinear motion;
insure one is running CW, and one is running CCW

when utilizing dual vibrators for feeders, and the outer eccentric weight is
thinner than the inner weight, one vibrator must be rotated 180 so the
vibrators synchronize when settings are less than 100%
(It is a good rule to do this all of the time)

AJAX QE Quadra-Eccentric Vibrators

The Ajax Quadra-Eccentric vibrator was developed for all
oil drip free and sound sensitive applications in the food
processing industry.
Gear set that requires no lubricationno oil leaks
Units operate in the range of 68-72 DbA
Nickel plated shafts
Polyamide 12 plastic driver gear
Changeable eccentric weights
Models 512 and 675 create a force output range
from 400-4,774 lbs. with an operating frequency
range of up to 1200 RPM. See rated RPM.
All eccentric weights are manufactured in cast steel.
Both model ranges (the QE 512 and QE 675) have only
two different size castings to cover the range from A to G.
Simply select which force output you require and remove the appropriate mass by drilling the weight. This gives you
the ability to change the force output very quickly, either on your shop floor prior to dispatch or when in use.

Dual QE Vibrators
As the demand in processing requires
greater production, it also requires larger
equipment which equates to more force
output from your vibrator. Renold Ajax has
tested and commissioned dual QE vibrators
for such applications. Drive shafts are
assembled left- and right-hand and
connected with a flexible coupling.

Lubrication-free Gear Set Vibrator

The QE Vibrator was introduced to the market after two years of development and rigorous testing, both in the plant
and in the field. Increased quality and value have been achieved as a result. For example, stress relieving of the nylon
gear blanks and hobbing the gear teeth individually to AMGA 9 standard, improved the quality and performance of the
QE range. Today, the QE Vibrator not only meets industry expectations, but will out-perform competitive models when
correctly selected and operated in line with the information given in this brochure.

Selecting a QE Vibrator
When a QE Vibrator is directly attached to a trough it is
referred to as a Brute Force design. It is very simple to
calculate the necessary vibrator by finding the required
force output (Fo) projecting the desired stroke. The
stroke, also referred to as amplitude (peak to peak),
is the resultant action produced by the vibrator when
properly isolated. As a general rule, brute force
conveyors should operate at 0.375 stroke @ 900 RPM
under load. The feed rate will most likely be considered
to be approximately 35 FPM.

Drill (2) 3/8 holes in both plastic covers,

see *NOTE.
Further:
Fo = 3.41 x 10 4 x f 2 x ER
Or

Stroke = Fo x C
Twt x f 2

ER =

Where:
Fo = the total force output of the vibrator(s)
C
= a constant having a numerical value
of 70470.91
Twt = total weight, combined value of the
trough, vibrator(s) weight and load
= frequency squared
f2
ppcf = pond per cubic foot

Fo
3.41 x 10 4 x f 2

If you supplement 1653 lbs. for Fo, the required ER

(unbalance, ft. lb. ) value is 5.98.
Refer to the QE Vibrator chart on page 6 and select
the vibrator on unbalanced ER value equal to the value
calculated, which is a model QE 675A.

Pre-Design
Once the QE Vibrator is mounted on the trough,
operate the unit and check the feed rate and stroke.
If parameters have changed after the pre design, such
as trough weight, vibrator and loads, you may find it
necessary to either increase or decrease the eccentricity,
thereby changing the stroke. Simply remove the covers
and change out the weights. QE Vibrators can be
purchased as core units and the eccentric weights
sold separately. Refer to pages 4-5 as weights can be
altered, changing the ER value by simply drilling and
removing mass. Consult the factory when doing this.

Example: Find the QE Vibrator size for a conveyor

needing to deliver 5 TPH of sand @ 100 ppcf. Assume
the pan width to be 18 wide and 72 long. Also for this
example, assume the trough weight is 205 lbs. and the
QE Vibrator @ 150 lbs.
5 TPH = 60 sec.2X 1.0 x 18 wide x depth x 100 pcf x 35 FPM
144 in. x 2000 lbs.
The resulting depth is 0.38. The sides of the trough
should be a minimum of twice this value. This depth is
the end of the dynamic angle of repose as it leaves the
trough. The inlet will be much greater.

*NOTE: Do not exceed the maximum RPM shown on

page 6. The maximum ambient room temperature
of all units is 100 degrees Fahrenheit, or 37.7 degree
Centigrade. Always drill (2) 3/8 diameter holes at the
lowest point through each of the plastic covers to
allow for water drainage when units are subjected
to wash down. If holes are not drilled, this will cause
corrosion and washout of the bearing grease,
thus voiding the warranty of this product.

Find the load of material in the trough:

0.38 x 18 x 72
x 100 pcf = 28.5
12 x 12 x 12
Find the total vibrated weight Twt:
205 lbs. + 150 lbs. = 28.5 lbs.
= 383.5 lbs.
trough
vibrators
load
Stroke .375 = Fo x 70470.91 2
383.5 lbs. x 900
Fo = 1653 lbs. minimum for a vibrator

Ajax QE Vibrator
Means Flexibility
Core units can be purchased. Included are
the basic housing sub-assembly and fastener
hardware kit less the four eccentric weights
and plastic covers with seal.

Complete models can also be purchased.

You must be accurate in your designs to
predict the required stroke. If you find that
design needs to change as your project
progresses, the QE Vibrator will provide
maximum flexibility very quickly since it is
so easy to change the weights, and
therefore the force.

If flexibility in your conveyor design is a

necessity on the lower end of an A through
D range, simply purchase for your stock the
Model D machined weight for either 512
or 675 QE Vibrators. The Model D
machined weights can be transformed
into a model A through C version by drilling
the appropriate diameter hole through the
weight. Always re-stamp the new weight for
future identification. All four weights fitted
into the one QE Vibrator must be identical.

The model E to G weight cannot be used

unless it is drilled for either a model E or F
weight. The model G weight must be specially
drilled at the factory level and filled with lead.

This new development gives us the ability

to change out the weights very quickly.

If you do not have the capability of accurately

drilling these holes, you must purchase
weights from the factory.

Refer to page 3 for calculating the required

stroke. Remember the total weight (Twt) is
the combined weight of the trough, vibrator
and the dynamic load.

The warranty of the Renold Ajax QE Vibrator

is valid only if they are selected and operated
within the guidelines set forth in this brochure.
If you have any questions on selection or
operation of these QE models, please contact
the Renold AJAX factory for assistance.

VIBRATORY
BELT
CONVEYORS
Equipment was custom designed to interface with an existing Carousel
Bagger for filling powdered protein into 50# bags.
50# paper bags are automatically loaded around Carousel Bagger fill head.
4 mechanical actuators lift the vibratory belt table flush with the bag bottom.
As product enters the bag, the vibrators are activated thru target weight,
then dynamically braked. The filled bag enters the sealing zone and is
palletized as the cycle is repeated every 10 seconds.
RESULT:
Densified product
Shorter bag lengths
Reduced pallet stack
cube for shipping
Less warehouse
space required
