AnEngagingMarineTrainingExperience
BarcelonaOcean(www.barcelonaocean.com)isaneducational
initiativegrantinghighlyspecializedcoursesonallfieldsrelativeto
theMarineSciencesaswellasgeneralistcoursesonmanythemes
relatedtotheformationofresearchersandsciencedissemination.
BarcelonaOceanofferscourseswithatypicaldurationofoneweek
(30hours)thoughtherearesomeshortercourses.Thesecoursesare
generallyaddressedtoresearchers,professionalsandstudents,but
anyoneinterestedintheseaisencouragedtoparticipate.
BarcelonaOceanisajointeffortbyInvestigAdHoc
(www.investigadhoc.com),ayoungcompanydedicatedtoproviding
educationalandscientificservicesinthemarinefield,andresearchers
fromtheInstitutdeCinciesdelMar(ICM,InstituteofMarineSciences
-www.icm.csic.es),possiblythelargestmarinesciencecentreinthe
MediterraneanandareferenceoceanresearchEuropeancentre.The
initiativearisesasthenaturaloutcomeoftheresearchandteaching
experienceatICM,withtheparticipationofinternationallyrecognized
researchersfromtheICMandprofessionalsfromothernationaland
internationalinstitutions.
Thetrainingofferspreadsovereighttopics:Disseminationcourses,
GeneralTopics,MarineTechnology,MarineBiochemicalCycles,
ConservationofNaturalMarineResources,StructureandDynamicsof
MarineEcosystems,PhysicsoftheOceanandClimate,Marine
Geosciences.Thecoursesaregroupedintimeintwoblocks:aspring
blockonMarineEcosystemsandConservationandanautumnblock
onOceanPhysicsandGeosciences,witheachoftheseblocksincluding
severalkeygeneralcoursesonissuessuchascommunicationand
dissemination,writingscience,andcomputerprogramming.
AllBarcelonaOceancoursesareheldattheICMfacilities,locatedat
thebeachfront,besidestheverypopularBarcelonetaquarterandat
only15minutewalkdistancefromdowntownBarcelona,andwith
nearbyuniversitylodgingfacilities.Barcelonaisaverybeautifuland
safecity,wellcommunicatedthroughitsairportandport,with
excellentmetropolitantransportation,enjoyableforwalkingandwith
averyextensiveculturalandscientificoffer.TheweatherinBarcelona
