CATALAN EDUCATION

1. PRESENTATION
1.1
Hello, my name is Noelia Lpez Jimnez, Im from
Barcelona, I have 22 years old and Im studying primary
education. Im going to talk about catalan education and how
the franquism influence. First I will explain a little introduction
for the history of catalan education. Later I explain more details
about this with experiences and some feelings about catalan
people, how they had lived the catalan education during
franquism. Finally I will do a conclusion where Iwill expected of
future catalan education.
1.2
The franquism in Catalonia was implanted since 1939 to
1975, finished when Francos death. He implanted a repression
catalan language. Nowadays the situation is very different,
nobody can speak catalan and the language is recognized. In
the future I will hopefully more children abroad for catalan
identity.
2. HISTORY
2.1
(Past) Such as I said before, franquism It was a tough time
for education in Catalonia. To see in the Catalan language a tool
of the catalanism and a symbol of resistance against the
regime. This period of time anybody can speak and read
catalan, and all people must use Spanish languages and masnt
use things of catalan culture. The proposit was have to had one
language for all the country, with the slogan Espaa unida,
grande y libre. In this period of time my family wasnt in
Catalonia but the parents of my boyfriend staid there. I usually
speak of them to know more details about this period and how
this repression increments his independent feelings. When they
were in Barcelona during the franquism they were at school.
They cant use catalan, and in all the classrooms was a emblem
of Francos repression. They musnt learn them birth language,
and now they are very decepcioned to speak catalan perfect
but nowadays teach them to write correctly catalan. There was
an uncertain times, and there was two different groups to points
of view. Once thoughts that Franquism wasnt just for catalan
people and they wanted to aboil it. Another one were pro-Franco
and just fulfill the orders. Some of this people go to a camps
concentration, and it was the grandfather of my boyfriend. He
stayed there until 6 month. All this feelings they concentrated
in my families boyfriend and its a one of the reasons they are
want the independence of Catalonia.

2.2
(Present) Nowadays the situation is changed, we now can
speak and use catalan whenever we want but, even so, I think
the feelings of this part of history in Catalonia remain. A lot of
people things Catalonia should be Independent but another
group of persons not things so. This discussion is present in
schools just when we learnt the history of Catalonia. The
children knows whats happens and they create their opinion.
Its important to say that school is not a machine where the
children converted in Independents. In catalan school, like the
rest of schools from Spain, the teacher teach about what
happens and who it changed the mentality of Catalans and the
feeling about the rest of Spain. At school teacher, from a
objective point of view. Instead, when the Dictatorship were in
Spain, children only must to learn in Spanish and teachers must
to impose them what they must thing. If they werent agree,
they were punished. And I think its a one important suggest to
understand who the catalan education have changed.
Before I said the feeling about the rest of Spanish people, I think
that outside of Catalonia people thinks all Catalans we think we
want to be independents, but its a myth. A lot of catalan people
are agree with it, but some other people arent. For example, I
had never been to be independent because I feel Spanish, my
mothers comes from Andalucia and my fathers from Galicia, I
have a mixt culture family and I love It. However, I understand
the situation of my boyfriend family. They are Catalans, and
they lived catalan repression. They arent identify with a
flamenco girl, or a bulls. They are identifying by sardanas, pa
amb tomaquet and rumba catalane, for example. My
presentation is not going to change yur mind, only for thing
more about it. We are going to think about catalan language. A
lot of people things why the classes in catalonia was in
catalan? If I come there, I must to learn the language? Before
do this question its important things, What I want? If you
want learn more culture, and have a real catalan university
experience, you must to learn catalan. If you only want to study
subjects and no more else, you should be think before Why I go
to Catalonia and not another part from Spain where classes was
in Spanish language. Some people dont know a recent law. The
Upper Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) forces to the
introduction of the Spanish to the entire classroom where there
is one student the parents of which have demanded a bilingual
education for the judicial road. But, its the correct way? One
person of the classroom decided which language we make?

2.3
(Future) I predict we will be in the same situation during a
lot of time. People things are a difficult situation and I Thinks so.

3. Conclusion
In the future I wish the situation change; I would believe catalan
converted in a interest language around the world. I think
languages are so interested and reward our culture.
