Royal Society Visit – Tuesday 15 June 2010
Staff from the Royal Society are visiting the University at 12 noon on 15 June, to encourage applications to
their funding schemes from UoY Early Career Researchers. There will be a one hour overview of their
schemes with the opportunity to ask questions within the session and over refreshments. Please alert
relevant staff and final year PhDs to the session. Anyone wishing to attend the session should email

European Oncology Nursing Society – Mentoring Grant ◙
 This grant is to support oncology nurses who are inexperienced researchers to work with a more
experienced oncology nurse researcher. The grant may be used to establish a project, conduct a

project proposal, or to conduct a study with the support of the mentor.

European Oncology Nursing Society – Major Research Grant ◙
 This grant has been established for European oncology nurse researchers with experience and a
research profile to undertake a research study of relevance to oncology nursing. Experience in

National Institute on Aging – Alzheimer’s Disease Drug Development Programme ◙
 Investigators in all relevant scientific disciplines and organisations are invited to develop and pre-
clinically test compounds which can slow the disease progression, reverse the disease process, or

decline.

Challenge ◙
 This is an opportunity for investigators working with molecular probe compounds to gain access
to a robust „virtual pharma‟ drug development network to develop neurotherapeutic drugs.
Disorders of interest include neurological, psychiatric and developmental disorders, dementias of
aging, diseases and disorders of the eye or ear, and drug and alcohol dependence and addiction.

 This Fellowship provides an opportunity for outstanding scientists to establish or to further develop

the research proposal, and the research environment provided by the sponsoring department. The

National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in
Research – PhD Studentships ◙
 Applications are invited for PhD studentships that will provide excellent scientific training as well as a
solid introduction to the 3Rs. This scheme aims to embed the 3Rs in the training of young
researchers from a broad skills base. Proposals relevant to any area of medical, biological or
veterinary research or safety testing will be considered and applications that integrate a range of
disciplines are welcomed, as are proposals with strong links to industrial project partners.

 Proposals are encouraged for exploratory clinical trials of drugs, biologics or devices, as well as

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke – Phase III Investigator-
Initiated Multi-Site Clinical Trials ◙
 These trials may address any research question related to the mission and goals of NINDS

to compare two or more existing treatments. This includes pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic,
and behavioural interventions given for disease prevention, prophylaxis, diagnosis, or therapy.

International Urogynecological Association – International Fellowships ◙
 This award is to allow for increased dissemination of urogynecological knowledge by funding travel
and living expenses for a Fellow to visit a renowned Urogynecology Centre and perform a clinical

according to the research interests and local situation of the host site.

NIHR Public Health Research Programme – Outreach programmes for traveller
communities (Evidence Synthesis) ◙
 The health of the traveller population is poorer than the health of even the most deprived groups of

and research is required in the form of evidence synthesis regarding effectiveness of these
programmes.
