USTER AFIS PRO

QualiProfile

QualiProfile

Practical examples of how to use the USTER AFIS PRO test results for the QualiProfile are given in
this section. The function and interpretation of the QualiProfile is described.

7.1

General

The QualiProfile was designed to make the data analysis easier for the operator. The USTER AFIS
PRO measurement results are displayed in a pie chart. The customer can determine their own limits
for each value and the respective color will show if the result falls within this limit automatically. The
customer can select what measurements will be displayed, and also how large the respective
measurement will be shown in the pie chart.
For example, a mill might have established limits of 80 Neps/ gram and 22% SFC (n) for a specific
card sliver. If the nep values are actually 95 Neps/ gram, the pie slice in the QualiProfile will be
colored red, indicating an out-of-limit value. If the SFC (n) value is at 20% for the same sliver sample,
the pie slice will be in a green color indicating that it is within the set limits. Thus, the QualiProfile
helps in easily finding an out-of-limit value without having to check all the data.
In addition, the customer can choose to compare his results simultaneously with the USTER
STATISTICS values. Here, he has to be careful to make the right selections for the right material. This
will be explained further in the examples listed below.
The overall idea is to make it easier for the operator to determine if the results are within expected
ranges or not. It is a tool designed to show the data automatically in a graphical format that can be
applied universally.

Example 1

Below is an example of a QualiProfile. It shows all the selected values in different shades of green,
which all have the same meaning: The results are within the set limits of this QualiProfile for that
specific sample. The blue areas indicate the limit ranges of the selected measurements.

Example 2

In this case, the Nep Count value fell out of the selected limit ranges for this sample. The Upper Limit
for Neps Counts was set to 400 Neps/ gram for this specific sample. However, the result was 451
Neps/ gram. Therefore the area was colored red, indicating an out-of-limit value. This makes it easy
for the operator to go back to the lab manager, pointing out a potential problem area.
The light blue lines indicate the upper and lower limits of the respective measurement.

Example 3 - Comparison to USTER STATISTICS

Again, all the measurements fall within the selected limits since the QualiProfile only shows green.
However, in this case the USTER STATISTICS was selected as well to compare to: The solid black
lines indicate the 5%, 50% and 95% level of the USTER STATISTICS. The dotted line indicated the
25% level, and the solid blue line the 75% level of the USTER STATISTICS.

Custom Design

Fig. 7-4 below shows the design function of the QualiProfile. The lab manager will have to assign
various QualiProfiles for different samples to be tested on the USTER AFIS PRO. For example, the
QualiProfile to evaluate incoming raw cotton will be different than the QualiProfile for a comber sliver
in the process.
Here, all the necessary selections are made: The name of the QualiProfile, what length
measurements are preferred (either by weight or by number) and what units were used during the
regular measurement. Please, note that you have to select the same length units here as in the test
mode. Also, the properties included in the QualiProfile are selected here. Please note that only the
most important USTER AFIS PRO test results can be selected for this purpose.
The weight percentage simply indicates the size of the pie slice. Since all the information is displayed
in a pie chart, the individual results can be displayed either in even sizes (selected by Even Weight)
or in different sizes, according to their importance for the customer. In this example, Nep Count was
selected at 25%. This means the pie slice will be size of a quarter of the entire pie thus clearly
visible to the operator, and indicating a major importance to the customer. UQL (w) and SFC (w) were
considered of equal importance at 15%. Then follow SCN Count, Maturity Ratio and VFM% at 10%.
Of lower importance are IFC%, Trash and Dust content in this case. The total always has to add up to
a 100%, since this indicates the full size of the pie.

QualiProfile

Note:
The customer also determines the QualiProfile limits at this point. Of course, he needs to have an
understanding already of what USTER AFIS PRO data to expect for certain raw cotton samples, and
how the results of his process samples normally fall. This is very important in order to make
reasonable selections for the QualiProfile limits.
For example, a regular saw ginned US Upland cotton would probably show a limit value for neps at
350 Neps/ gram, whereas a combed cotton sliver will have a limit of maybe 30 Neps/ gram
(depending on the yarn count to be spun). There are no universal limits that can be applied to every
process and cotton in the same way. Therefore, we recommend establishing a database of the
current results in the spinning mill, first, before entering any limit values.
Also, it is recommended to print the design screen for a specific QualiProfile when the design process
is finished. This helps as a reminder of what selections we made for future references. We will refer to
the selections of the USTER FIBER STATISTICS in Fig. 7-5 below.

7.6

Selecting a QualiProfile

It is of equal importance to select the right QualiProfile for the right samples that have been tested.
Perform the following steps:
1. Select the respective QualiProfile
2. Then choose the customer (or file) name under which the
test results were saved.
3. Then select the Identifier within the respective file.
4. As a reminder, the basic selections made for that
QualiProfile show up below
This sounds more complicated than it is in reality. After a few
QualiProfiles have been selected on the USTER AFIS PRO,
the concept will be easily understood.

Running a QualiProfile

In the example below, the name of the QualiProfile that was selected was Raw Material, N. The data
that was selected for the QualiProfile was stored under Customer Two and Bale Carded. All test
data of that sample fell within the given limits except the Upper Quartile Length (UQL w), which is
highlighted in red. The Short Fiber Content (SFC w), which was selected by clicking on the pie slice,
was 9%, which is equivalent to the 70% level of the USTER STATISTICS for Fiber Properties at the
selected reference length of 1.20 inches.
Please note that definitions used for the QualiProfile, the Customer name and the Identifier are all
customized and that they will be different for different instrument users.

Built-in USTER FIBER STATISTICS

There are several selections to be made in case the customer wants to compare his data not only to
his personal set limits but also to the USTER FIBER STATISTICS. Depending on the material that is
being tested, he has to make the selection between Fiber Properties and Fiber Processing. For
example, raw cotton samples will be compared mainly to the Fiber Properties STATISTIC, whereas
card sliver samples will be compared to the Fiber Processing STATISTIC.

7.8.1

Fiber Properties

If the customer selects to compare his data with the Fiber Properties STATISTICS, he needs to
make sure to select the correct reference length for that material. The reference length is the basis for
comparing results on raw cotton (please review the USTER STATISTICS for further information). We
recommend using the rounded UQL (w) value of the USTER AFIS PRO length measurements to
determine what reference length to choose.

Fiber Processing

If the customers decides to compare his material to the Fiber Processing STATISTICS, he has
several more selections to make. First, he can choose between a carded ring spun process (Carded
Ring Spinning) and a combed ring spun process (Combed Ring Spinning). There are different
levels of measurement results between both processes. We recommend selecting the carded ring
spun process also for open-end spun applications. Further, the customer needs to select the sub
process, which relates to the different process stages during the spinning process. He needs to make
sure, again, to select the sub process that corresponds with his test material. For example, it does not
make sense to compare card mat results with card sliver data from the USTER STATISTICS.
Again, it is helpful to review the USTER STATISTICS publication for further information in this case.

QualiProfile 4

The example below shows a QualiProfile with the name Process, Comb, N. The USTER
STATISTICS that were selected for comparison was the Fiber Processing STATISTIC. The Identifier
shows that the material tested was card mat. Thus, the selected STATISTICS values were also from
card mat, in this case for a combed ring spun yarn. All fiber properties selected fall outside the set
limits with the exception of the IFC and SCN results. The highlighted Nep Count shows, in fact, 591
Neps/ gram. However, the Upper Limit was set at 500 Neps/ gram. 591 Neps/ gram are at the 75%
level of the USTER STATISTICS for card mat in combed ring spun processes.

Summary

The QualiProfile enables a quick overview of the USTER AFIS PRO measurements. It is a graphical
report of the data and allows the operator to quickly determine outlier results. All settings are
customized, which means the customer needs to make the initial settings based on his mill results.
However, the USTER FIBER STATISTICS are integrated. Thus, one can compare his
measurements not only to their internal standards but also to international measurement levels. After
the initial setup, this can be done easily and quickly giving the operator quality at a glance.
