Importance of Earth to Man

Earth is the only planet where life is
found
Environment provides many services
Bio-diversity is vital for man
Life has sustained because of the
natural cycles
Earth is witnessing imbalance

Who is responsible for

imbalance?
To know who is responsible lets see how
earth evolved?

What is global warming?

How Global Warming Works

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)

Example of the
Greenhouse Effect
The Suns energy
passes through the
cars windshield.

This energy (heat)

is trapped inside
the car and cannot
pass back through
the windshield,
causing the inside
of the car to warm

Whats the difference

between global warming
and climate change?

Difference
GLOBAL WARMING
is the increase of the
Earths average
surface temperature
due to a build-up of
greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere.

CLIMATE CHANGE
is a broader term that
refers to long-term
changes in climate,
including average
temperature and
precipitation.

Effects of Global Warming

Rising Sea Level

Increased Temperature

Habitat Damage and

Species Affected

Changes in Water Supply

Whats the proof that

global warming is taking
place?

happening?

What Is A Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is a
measure of the impact our
activities have on the
environment, and in
particular climate change. It
relates to the amount of
greenhouse gases
produced in our day-to-day
lives through burning fossil
fuels for electricity, heating
and transportation etc.

The carbon
footprint is a
measurement of all
greenhouse gases
we individually
produce and has
units of tonnes (or
kg) of carbon
dioxide equivalent

manufactured goods,
materials, wood, roads,
buildings, and services. For
simplicity of reporting, it is
often expressed in terms of
the amount of carbon
dioxide, or its equivalent of
other GHGs, emitted.

What can you do to help

solve the problem?

Simple Things To Do
Turn off your computer or the TV
when youre not using it.
Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.
Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or

curtains.
Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

Be Bulb SmartUse CFLs

Incandescent

Whats the
difference?

Compact
Fluorescent

500 lbs.
of coal
1,430 lbs. CO2 pollution avoided
$30 saved

Simple Things To Do
Dress lightly when its hot instead of turning up
the air conditioning. Or use a fan.

Dress warmly when its cold instead of turning

up the heat.
Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on
your AC and furnace clean.
Walk short distances instead of asking for a
ride in the car.
Plant a tree.

Recycle.
