The compilation of poems by the American poet Billy Collins is a

combination of soft sounds, clear voice and vivid images which appeal
directly to the viewer's imagination. Collins` unadorned language and
appreciation for the mundane welcomes readers to slip into profound
observation on the everyday events. The writer not only addresses the
audience directly, describing all suburban, domestic and real worlds,
but he also explores its most serious preoccupations. Animated videos
let Collins fire the popular imagination with his contemporary style and
present inventive subject matter that help us feel the mystery of being
alive. Collins has the ability to observe with accuracy things as they are
in themselves, and with fidelity to describe them, unmodified by any
passion or feeling. These recordings(?) capture readers with Collins`
profound insight and thought-provoking image s. Rarely has anyone
written poems that appear so transparent on the surface but become
so ambiguous once the reader analyses them carefully.
Collins poem Forgetfulness warns the audience about memory loss
later in life:
Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue,
not even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.
The writer also makes reference to death appealing to the viewers and
tries to transmit them that those of all who remain dear to us will still be
here, always.
The dead are always looking down on us, they say,
while we are putting on our shoes or making a sandwich,
they are looking down through the glass-bottom boats of heaven
as they row themselves slowly through eternity.
He also writes Some Days , which makes a contrast between having
control and being controlled. In life you can either be a follower, the
one who is "lifted up by the ribs, then lowered into the dining room of a
dollhouse, or a leader, the one who "put[s] the people in their places at
the table."Another theme highlighted in the poem is the uncertainty that
lies with each day. One day you might have control over something,
another day you might not.
But other days, I am the one
who is lifted up by the ribs,

then lowered into the dining room of a dollhouse

to sit with the others at the long table.
"The Best Cigarrate" is a poem that narrates the speaker's experience in
several occasions in which he is smoking.

That was the best cigarette,

when I would steam into the study
full of vaporous hope
and stand there,
the big headlamp of my face
pointed down at all the words in parallel lines.
It is true that people treat poems like math answers, while they can be
analyzed and interpreted in a million of ways. Collins` poetry is a
phenomenon since he lets the reader experience a poem and discover
what its deeper meaning is by taking banal examples.
Reading/listening poetry is to experience, hear, see and feel it.
