family. Include their respective classification and
nature (6 marks)

Scenario
Samantha is a 17 year old student who is hoping to become a
high school teacher after she completes her HSC. She lives in a
2 bedroom home with her parents, 12 year old sister Katrina
and 8 year old brother Luke. Samantha is great at netball and
has been selected in representative teams since she was 13
years old. There are many expenses when playing at such
levels of competition. She works casually at the local caf.
At the beginning of the year, her father was made redundant
from his job. This was the first job he had since leaving school.

The family now has to rely on her mothers small income from
part-time administration work, as well as Centrelink
unemployment benefits. The familys one-wage income does
not meet the financial needs of the mortgage, car repayments
and living expenses.

for Samantha, drawing
her closer to achieving
her HSC goal.

B
Limited Resources
1 Money This is a limited resource as once money has been
spent and or used, it cannot be used again, and that money
must be replaced with new money. It relates to Samantha as it
plays a factor in her situation and will continue to play a factor
in terms of mending the situation.
2 Scholarship If Samantha receives a scholarship for
university or college (most likely based on her athletic
prowess.) it will be a limited resource, as it would only be useful
for a certain period of time and once used, cannot be used
again.
3 House/car Both are assets that once used would have to
be replaced by new ones; therefore being limited resources.
Both could prove as a source of money for her family and solve
issues such as transport and car mortgage and accommodation
the latter being important to her.

Preliminary CAFS Assessment Task 1

C
Goal 1:
One goal for Samantha would be; academic success for
Samantha in her HSC years, to, in turn pursue her goal of
becoming a teacher.
Values reflected in goal:
Important values reflected in this goal will be hard-work ethic
and determination. These two values will be the determining
factor of whether or not Samantha achieves the desired level of
success. Along with these, resilience and humility are
important, as the HSC years are tough, and for her to be able to
cope and keep a strong determination she needs resilience to
carry on through and she needs humility to accept any failures
and carry on regardless.
Goal 2:
A major goal for Samanthas family would be getting her
father back on his feet, and him getting a new job so that the
economic problems of the household can begin to fix.
Values reflected in goal:
There are many important values reflected in this goal,
which include values such as teamwork and respect. They all
need to work together to help their father get a new job, and
5
Preliminary CAFS Assessment Task 1

they need to respect it could take a while as being made

redundant has a big effect on ones self-esteem and their well
being as a whole. Furthermore values would include
responsibility and love; the father needs to assume the
responsibility of providing for the family, by getting back on his
feet. He will do this out of love and respect for his wife and
children.
Goal 3:
To meet the economical expenses her family faces, which is
to pay their mortgage, car repayments and to be able to afford
their living expenses, would be a very important goal for
Samantha and her family.
Values reflected in goal:
Important values reflected in this goal include preservation
and hope. As they need to pay off their debts in order to
preserve a positive well being, and they both need hope to
achieve this and will gain hope once they have accomplished
this goal. Resilience and optimism are two cardinal values that
the family will have during the pursuit of this goal.
2
Goal:
One goal for Samantha and her family is to help her father
get back on his feet and being anew at a job, so that he can
provide the economic expenses that the family must attend to.
Management Strategies:
This is an important goal for Samantha and her family, as
they are in debt and are in need of money to pay for the many
expenses that the family has. This would also furthermore solve
the problem of Samantha paying for her sport expenses, as well
as make a means to improve the situation of accommodation in
which Samantha shares a room with all of her siblings. There
are a number of ways that Samantha and her family can go
6
Preliminary CAFS Assessment Task 1

about using management strategies to achieve this goal whilst

maintain their well being. They must first set short term goals,
such as writing at a succinct resume, and helping their father
regain self-esteem which would have a positive reflection on
the wellbeing of everyone in the family. They could attend
family therapy/counselling sessions in which each of them
could express their issues and worries and have them
professionally dealt with. Once they have achieved their short
term goals they could move forward into setting medium term
goals for her father, all for the purpose of achieving their most
important goal of getting a job for their father and regaining his
self-esteem. These medium term goals would include attending
job interviews, handing at resumes and enjoying family time so
that all of the family is having a good well being during this
entire pursuit. They will need to have good decision making,
knowing what choices to make and they must be very good
organisation, in terms of organising interviews and sessions
with counselling and other resources. The family as a whole, to
maintain a positive well being throughout this goal can access
support, such as centrelink unemployment benefits to give
some economic stability, furthermore they could make use of
unemployment helpline or organisations such as the
Unemployed Help Centre (UHC). Accessing support is not only
limited to formal resource centres and organisation, they can
rely on other family and friends for support. They can ask them
for money and just have social gatherings which would
maintain their well being of all of the family, as it would
accentuate values such as love and belonging. Sustainable
7
Preliminary CAFS Assessment Task 1

behaviours will have to be adopted by the family along this

process, such as spending adequately so that no unnecessary
expenses are made, and all can contribute to the help of the
goal they are to achieve, which will in turn solve this issue; this
would contribute to a positive well being as the family will be
making progress and have a sense of accomplishment.
Resources can be used interchangeably, which can be
accentuated by them as they could interchange spending their
money on an expensive dinner, to buying an adequately priced
dinner as a family and save the rest for that payments they
need to make later. Throughout all this it is important the family
is engaged in other activities and pursuits, this includes
education for each of the children so they have interaction with
other people and maintain a positive well being by playing out
their life as normal teenagers. The wife and the husband must
rely on each others support and must remain resilient, which
would give them an optimistic outlook on the situation
sustaining their well being. Overall the family must adopt
important management skills and know to use the resources
and support available to them, whilst maintain a healthy
lifestyle. By following all of these management strategies the
family can get their father back on their feet with a job, and
maintain their well being throughout this pursuit.
