And if you are selling your jowolry, these are just the kinds of details a sophisticated customer will notice, soldered Jump rings Jump rings are wire circles used fo connect jewelly components, including charms, chains, clasps, dangles, or other jump rings. Chain maille jewelry can be made entirely ‘out of jump rings. ‘A standard jump ring is cut along its circumference, which allows you to open nd close it. Soldered jump rings are permanently closed so they work welll as half of a clasp. Jump rings come in many sizes — some of them as small as 2 mm — in different gauges and finishes and in a rainbow of colors. Ityou get bored with circles, jump rings come in squares, triangles, hearts, and other shapes. Oval jump rings are particularly useful because dangles hang safely betiow the jump ring’s cut should it aocidentally pull open. Never open a jump ring by pulling the ends ‘way from each other - you'll never get them back in the correct alignment. Instead use. two pais of pliers to grip the jump ring on each side of the opening and move one lier toward you and the other away from you (forward/backward). Use the same movements to close the jump ting Another option to consider, especially if you use @ lot of jump rings is @ jump ting tool. This is basically a ring that fits on your finger and has one or more slots in i. You insert the jump ring into the appropriate sized slot and bend the jump ting to open or close it CRYSTALLIZED™ CREATIVE TIP #7 You want to exchange créative ideas with other crystal enthusiasts from all over the world, seek expert advice, and get design and style tips? It is neither soldered closed nor left open. The ting Coils around twice, like the ring on © key chain. Once components are added by sliding them around the coils. they are very secure Spit rings are not as elegant looking aso standard one-coll ring, but are very secure ‘and recsonably easy to use. Special splitring pliers are available for easier opening of the cos. Another jump ring hybrid is the snapping jump. ring usually found under the brand name Snapece®, They open like a regular jump ring. bul close more securely (Indicated by a tiny snapping noise when the two sides brush ‘against each other as the ring is closed). While the closure is the next best thing to soldered itis not quite soldered, snapping jump rings are net intended fo be used with beading wire (@ soldered ring is best) but rather for connecting charms or findings. You can make your own jump rings by wropping a piece of 18-20-gauge wire tightly around a pen. knitting needle, dowel, or other cylindrical object to form a coil. Remove the coil and with wire cutters ot a right angle to the coil, trim tho ctraight wire tails from each end of the coil. Slighlly separate the fist ing from the Coil. With your cutters at a right ‘angle, cut where the wire completes the first ring. Continue cutting rings off the coil Tips If you use diagonal wire cutters, the ends of your jump rings will be pointed, , 9 plain BOS.N80709 decorative Trim the points with the flush side of your cutlets. ang file the ends If necessary. The ‘ends of the jump ring should meet squarely when the jump ring is closed. There is also a handy gadgel made just for creating jump tings. It comes with several mandrels in difterent sizes. The mandrels come in standard jump ting sizes and in round or ‘oval shapes. It works on the same principle as the homemade jump ring maker, out is easier to rotate for perfect circles. Head pins Ahead pin is & wire with a litle nub (hood) at ‘one end. It looks like @ long, skinny nail. You'll need head pins to string beads for dangles. Head pins come in different gauges and lengths, but 2-in. (6 cm) 22: or 24-gauge head pins work for most projects. If you'e new to making loops, you might want fo use Sin. (7.6 cm) pins to give you alittle extra wire to hold onto. You can always trim the excess wire An eye pin has a loop (instead of a flat heed) at the end, You can make your own with wire, but if you need to mate lots of dangles, eye pins will save you time. Head pins come in a number of fancy vatieties too, with balls, paddles, crystols, beads ond other ombolishments replacing the nub or loop. You can make your own fancy head pin by cutting a small piece of wire and making a coil or other shape at the end (anything large enough to stop a bead). You can also pound the end of the wire into 0 flat pacidle shape. eye jeweled 2 CREATE YOUR STYLE with CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements * -Og- CREATE YOUR STYLE with CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements Inspiration Book ‘We proudly anrounce that the third edition of the CREATE YOUR STYLE with CRYSTALLIZED™ — Swarorski Bemen Inspiation Book, Africa & Scandinavia: Creativity at the Crossroads, nes been launches! “The incpization Book provides 2 fascinating look at the two culurally and geosrantically diferent, yet creatively equally inspiing design works of Africa ane Scandinavia, In addition to stories and information ebout the two regions and the CREATE YOUR STYLE intiative, the book styishly shoncases 57 designs exclusively created for the initiative by 30 clffeent international designers Watch the CRFATE YOUR STYLE website or downtoadable step-by-step instructions or selected designs starting in June, with new designs to become avaiable on a regular basis.
