Feel the Wind nomadic arts residency

ACM is hosting an experimental music


residency under the theme Feel the Wind
from August 30 to September 7 in scope of
the annual Nomadic Arts Residency (NAR)
program. NAR is an innovative nonprofit
artists-in-residence program of ACM jointlyorganized and sponsored by the Arts council
of Korea (ARKO) since 2008.

Nomadic Arts Residency aims to enhance


cross cultural artistic collaboration and
expand opportunities for Mongolian artists
to work and collaborate with international
artists.
NAR-2016 puts together Mongolian
Korean musicians, singer, composers, music
director in an intimate, immersive residency

American Film Showcase comes to Mongolia

During the residency artists will be asked to
improvise, and if possible create a complete
new composition from scratch through oneon-one interaction between musicians and
the exchange of ideas and inspiration in
the context of the natural environment of

contemplate the musical expressions of
nomads bringing new ways of thinking
about sounds, music, space, and place.
Each musician will enrich their musical
imagination and nourish his own creative
process by enabling the experience of
abundant strangeness in the Gobi desert
where one has never played their music.
Artists are encouraged to bring new
approaches to performance and creativity
from the perspective of the artist.
This year ARKO invited the Korean
fusion music band NuMori. Numori plays
traditional Korean music, Sanjo and Sinawui,
and Korean classical music in a bluesy
style. Their music is funky and jazzy with
traditional rhythm and its cheerful rhythm
contains wild flavors of rock music. NuMori
creates profound and mysterious echo
sounds with Korean traditional melodies,
pursues a feeling like meditation music and
spiritual sounds.
ACM invited Mongolian long song
singer Ariuntsetseg and Morin Khuur player
Batbayar from Mongol ongod ethnic music
band, limbe player Myagmartseren, dulcimer
player Barkhuu from the Ulaanbaatar
Ensemble, and throat singer Munkhbat from
Altain orgil ethnic music band.
Harmonized with a western saxophone,
keyboard and electric guitar, Korean
classical music traditional percussion
instruments yanggeum, janggu buk fuse
with Mongolian long song, throat singing
and nomadic music instruments to form an
eclectic blend of sound.
At the end of residency, new pieces
will be premiered at the Feel the Wind final
concert along with NuMori original music
at the Ulaanbaatar ensemble concert hall on
September 7 at 7 pm.

ACM will screen five AFS films during the
envoys visit and we hope that you will find
mutual appreciation in the different stories

Russian violinist Pavel Milyukov to perform solo concert in UB

The American Film Showcase brings


award-winning contemporary American
documentary and independent narrative
films to audiences around the world, offering
a view of American society and culture as
seen by independent filmmakers. Funded
by a grant from the State Departments
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
(ECA) and administered by the University
of Southern California School of Cinematic
Arts (SCA), the Showcase highlights the
value of film in fostering understanding and
cooperation, dialogue, and debate. The AFS
films explore diverse topics including civil
rights, disabilities, social justice, sports,
freedom of the press, technology, and the
environment.
On September 12-17, the U.S. Embassy

in Ulaanbaatar is partnering with the


Arts Council of Mongolia to organize the
2016 American Film Showcase (AFS) in
Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan. The American
Film Showcase is a major touring film
program bringing American documentaries,
feature films, and film education to audiences
worldwide. The showcase in Mongolia
consists of two primary components:
person-to-person diplomacy trips in which
two envoys travel to Ulaanbaatar for nine
days for targeted programming in the form
of classes and workshops, and an AFS
screening series at Tengis Cinema.
The AFS trip to Mongolia will host
two film envoys: Sandy McLeod, Director
of featured AFS film Seeds of Time, and
Director Andrew Garrison. Pairing a film

Production presents a Solo Concert by
Pavel Milyukov, a famous musician and
world music audience award violinist and
solo performer of the Moscow Philharmonic.
The concert is being held at the State Opera
and Ballet Theatre for the 95th anniversary
of diplomatic relations between Russian and
Mongolia.
Pavel Milyukov was born in 1984 in
Perm. At the age of four, he started taking
violin lessons from Honored Cultural
Worker of Russia T.A. Shvetsova. In 2000,
he moved to Moscow and entered the
Academical Musical College at the Moscow
P.I. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory.
From 2003, Pavel Milyukov has
been successfully participating in various
musical competitions. He is a laureate of

the following international competitions:


Kloster Shontal (2003, Germany, 2nd prize),
Ersi Sarazzi (2004, Greece, 1st prize), Violin
Competition in Togliatti (2002, Russia, 1st
prize), Robert Canetti International Violin
Competition (2005, Hungary, 1st prize),
Yamplosky Violin Competition (2006,
Moscow), Paganini Moscow International
Violin Competition (2007, Moscow), David
Oistrakh III International Violin Competition
(2008, Moscow), First International Violin
Competition in Astana (Kazakhstan, Grand
Pri, and Vibrarte (2008, Paris) as part of the
trio Con Spirito.
