CELL CYCLE VOCABULARY

10 I
Interphase
Dictionary: The resting phase between successive mitotic divisions of a cell, or between the first
and second divisions of meiosis.
Own: Interphase is normal cell activity, where the cell do everyday stuff.
Sentence: During interphase of the cell cycle, a second chromatid containing a copy of the DNA
comes together.

G1 Phase
Dictionary: The first growth period of the cell cycle, during interphase, in which the cell grows and
cytoplasmic organelles are replicated.
Own: Phase when the organelles are duplicated.
Sentence: G1 is the very first step of the cell cycle.

S Phase
Dictionary: The period of the cell cycle prior to mitosis, during which the chromosomes are
replicated.
Own: Phase when the DNA is duplicated into 92 chromosomes.
Sentence: S phase is the phase when gnome is replicated.

G2 Phase
Dictionary: The second growth period of the cell cycle, following DNA replication and preceding
prophase, during which the cell forms the materials that make up the spindle.
Own: Phase when the enzymes are made.
Sentence: G2 phase, is the phase of secondary growth.

Prophase
Dictionary: The first stage of cell division, before metaphase, during which the chromosomes
become visible as paired chromatids and the nuclear envelope disappears. The first prophase of
meiosis includes the reduction division.
Own: The phase when a cells begin to divide with the appearance of centrioles and it the centrioles
start to move, the nuclei membrane also disappear.
Sentence: The cell cycle that leads to a cell division is prophase, metaphase, anaphase and
telophase.

Metaphase
Dictionary: The second stage of cell division, between prophase and anaphase, during which the
chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibres.
Own: The phase when the spindle fibres attach their self to the DNA, then the DNA start moving
into the centre (middle) of the cell.
Sentence: During the metaphase of mitosis, replicated chromosomes have a structure that enables
the spindle fibres to connect with them.

Anaphase
Dictionary: The third stage of cell division, between metaphase and telophase, during which the
chromosomes move away from one another to opposite poles of the spindle.
Own: The phase where the spindle fibres pull the DNA apart.
Sentence: This process is often described as separation of alleles and occurs at anaphase of a
metosis.

Telophase
Dictionary: The final phase of cell division, between anaphase and interphase, in which the
chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are formed.
Own: The phase when a cell starts to make a nuclei membrane again and mitosis ends in this phase.
Sentence: The anaphase and telophase is the two last step of metosis cycle.

Cytokinesis
Dictionary: The cytoplasmic division of a cell at the end of mitosis or meiosis, bringing about the
separation into two daughter cells.

Own: When cell begins to become them self and work as usual again.
Sentence: The conclusion of one cell cycle is a cytokinesis that produce two identical daughter
cells.

Chromosome
Dictionary: A thread-like structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living
cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
Own: Chromosome is when a DNA condensed, chromosome consist of genetics traits from our
parents. 23 from our Father and 23 from our Mother, so a human being has 46 chromosomes.
Sentence: A chromosome is a cell organelle that contains the genes traits.

Chromatid
Dictionary: Each of the two thread-like strands into which a chromosome divides longitudinally
during cell division. Each contains a double helix of DNA.
Own: Pair of chromosomes.
Sentence: Chromatid is like a twin.

Centriole
Dictionary: Each of a pair of minute cylindrical organelles near the nucleus in animal cells,
involved in the development of spindle fibres in cell division.
Own: A centriole is only exist in an animal cell, centriole is the one that produce spindle fibres for
the mitosis cycle.
Sentence: Centriole are made of a microtubules.
