Hike For Hospice Hike For Life
We invite you to join us on Saturday, September 17 for

the third annual Hike for Hospice, our major fundraising
event of the year.
Walk, run or hike the beautiful five kilometer Kaslo River
Trail, or follow the shorter, wheelchair and scooter-accessible route through Vimy Park. Dogs on leash are welcome.
Help us to raise funds for the Hospice Society of North
Kootenay Lake (HSNKL). Pick up pledge envelopes from
businesses around town and collect as many donations as
you can. Register on the day at the Kemball Building front
lawn at 1 pm. The hike begins at 1:30 pm. Refreshments
and prizes await the hikers on their return.
HSNKL is responding to an increasing number of
requests for palliative care assistance and grief counselling. Our services are offered free of charge. You can be
part of a community wide event to help support hospice
services in our area!

Creating A Canine Connection
Is there a dog in your life? Have you ever worried that

the dog you love and care for could harm or even just
scare the wits out of a child or other vulnerable person or
pet? Maybe dogs are a part of your working life and youre
the one who has had a bad experience with an aggressive
canine. What can you do to change a dogs bad behaviour?
Grisha Stewart, an international speaker, author and dog
trainer, has helped dog trainers and caregivers worldwide
to rehabilitate aggressive dogs to prevent the frustration
and fear that can send both dogs and their owners off the
rails. As caregivers, we have the opportunity to facilitate
two-way communication, empower animals to meet their
needs and teach them how to actively cooperate.
Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT), a technique pioneered by Stewart, does not employ cruel techniques like
prong collars and choke chains. I understand why people
may have used these tools, but decades of research and practice tell us that there is no reason to train with pain or fear.
She explains that there are better solutions for every dog
issue, including positive reinforcement and clicker training.

We have our eye on several projects for enhancement

and improvement in the village.
One such endeavour is the landscaping and outdoor gathering and visitation place with a parklike setting especially
for seniors in the cenotaph-library-wellness centre area.
This may be a three part project depending upon our fundraising successes. We presently have a spring village-wide
garage sale each April and are now organizing Family Fair
Day. This is a major undertaking for a small group of volunteers in the hopes of attracting people all through the valley.
The day will begin with a pancake breakfast at 8 am in
the Legion Hall. At 10 am the parade will begin and proceed up Harold Street to Giffin Avenue and on to Expo
Park. The parade is hosting the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band,
vintage cars and trucks, kids with decorated bikes and pets,
floats and horses just to name a few. We just may have
a surprise celebrity guest to add more fun in the parade!
