The two panels of Babylonian lion mosaics that protected the street of Ishtar symbolize

Ishtar, God of love and war. They are located at the Ancient Near Eastern Art gallery at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. These lifesize lions, located at opposite sides, are
made with blue and nude glazed bricks which give them an aspect of reality. The two lions give
the sensation of power and supremacy, as well as it makes one to feel protected just as they did to
Ishtar gates.
This life-size Marble statue of a Kouros standing in a frontal pose with his left leg moved
forward and his arms close to their bodies represents a Greek male. Standing at this youth
Kouros position it gives an appearance of a more primitive and nature image. While the
Polykleitos' copy of the Marble statue of the Diadoumenos gives an appearance of greater
anatomical precision and accuracy in representation when compared to the Kouros. It is clearly a
difference between these two marble statues, the Diadoumenos displays greater attention to
human detail than the Kouros .
The Egyptian Funerary Papyrus of the Steward by Dynasty 19 is located at the Egyptian
Art gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It displays three gods, Osiris,
Isis and Nephthys. Osiris, Lord of eternity and King of the Gods, is located at the left adjacent to
Nephthys as the most elaborately drawn and colored. Isis, Osiris' sister, is located at the right
adjacent as well to Osiris.
The Byzantine's modern restoration of a Fragment of a Floor Mosaic with a
Personification of Ktisis is created with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass and
marble. Small pieces of rocks, mostly roughly square, glass of different colors, were used to
create this picture. It is located at the Medieval Art gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in
New York City.
The French Virgin and Child in Majesty
Christ, as the Son of God, is Wisdom incarnate. Mary, who carried Christ in her womb and who
holds him on her lap, serves as his seat, or throne. She becomes the throne to the Christ Child as
he perches on her lap, symbolizing her role in giving birth not only to the human Jesus, but also
to the divine Christ. Virgin and Child in Majesty provides the museums medieval collection with
an exquisite example of the French Romanesque wood sculpture genre and the Throne of
Wisdom subject matter, both of which are highly sought after in medieval artwork.

Christs Descent into Hell
We found it so eye-catching because of its distinctive, dark color palette that makes it stand
out from the rest of the gallery, and also because of its surreal and macabre subject matter.
if you look closely, you can see a plethora of extremely creative and extravagantly hellish
debauchery: an owl with a human face reading a book, a half-submerged structure in the
shape of a gaping human mouth, and a veritable cornucopia of nightmarish creatures

The Denial of Saint Peter
After the artist's many attempts to intensify the dynamics of a scene from the right, this
composition offers a dramatic sequence of figures from the left. On a very dark night with
deep shadows and without any indication of artificial light, a soldier wearing a helmet and
armor appears from the left. He is turning his face so far round to the maid that it gets
swallowed up by the darkness. The maid herself, her face obscured by the soldier's shadow,
is peering at the soldier from close quarters. She is pointing her left hand at St Peter, who is
holding both hands against his chest in a gestion of confirmation. For the apostle,
Caravaggio has chosen a model who might well pass for an executioner or a villain. At this
point, the viewer is not expected to sympathize with Peter's plight.

Whale Transformational Mask
Whale Transformation Mask
A whale transformation mask, such as the one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (below),
gives the impression that the whale is swimming. The masks conveyed social position (only
those with a certain status could wear them) and also helped to portray a familys
genealogy by displaying (family) crest symbols.
How is it used?

Describe five of the most interesting elements hanging from or attached to the figure. Why does
it have nails and sharp objects imbedded in it?
Shiva Nataraja
Shiva as Lord of Dance is a symbolic synthesis of the most important aspects of Hinduism.
Nataraj is shown with four hands represent the cardinal directions.
The gestures of the dance represent Shiva's five activities, creation (symbolized by the
drum), protection (by the "fear not" hand gesture), destruction (by the fire), embodiment
(by the foot planted on the ground), and release (by the foot held aloft).
Why does this figure have four arms and hands and what do they symbolize?

Improvisation 27 by Vasily Kandinsk is generated from nature and spiritual beliefs which
makes spiritual music to come from the deepest of the paint. It is located at the Modern and
Contemporary Art gallery at the MET. The expression of the primary hues in the large sun,
yellow and red rays, give it a unique spiritual meaning.
The enormous size of Jackson Pollocks Autumn Rhythm located at the Modern and
Contemporary Art gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City gives the
sensation of life. The abstract expression it has and the large presence of black and white made
me feel free. As I walked to the whole painting all problems I had at that time were literally
gone.
