BABERS ERA BEGINS

A proven winner and respected mentor, Dino
Babers begins his first season at the helm of the
Orange football program in 2016. Babers owns
more than 30 years of experience in the coaching
profession.
Babers arrived at Syracuse after serving as the
head coach of Bowling Green from 2014-15. In
that time, the Falcons registered an 18-9 overall
record, captured two Mid-American Conference
(MAC) East Division crowns, won the 2015 MAC
championship, and were victorious in the 2014
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.
Prior to Bowling Green, Babers was the head
coach at Eastern Illinois from 2012-13. In his two
seasons with the Panthers, the team claimed two
Ohio Valley Conference titles and twice advanced
to the FCS playoffs. In 2013, quarterback Jimmy
Garoppolo was named the 2013 Walter Payton
Award winner, which is presented annually to the
top player in the FCS.

ORANGE IN SEASON OPENERS

Syracuse holds an 80-42-4 overall record in
season-opening contests. The team has won each
of its past two season openers, defeating Rhode
Island in its first game of the 2015 campaign and
beating Villanova two years ago.
The Orange sport a 68-18-4 mark in season
openers at home. Syracuse opened every year at
home from 1900-55. During that span, the club
went 48-5-2 in season-opening games, including
an undefeated 41-0-2 mark from 1900-42.
The Orange football and mens basketball
programs will both open their seasons against
Colgate during the 2016-17 academic year. It
marks the fifth time in history that both teams
will play the same school in their season-opening
contests and first time since 1946.

Last season, Syracuse dominated Rhode Island in
its first game of the year, 47-0. The 47-point win
marked the programs largest margin of victory in
a season opener since the team defeated Buffalo,
63-7, to kick off 2000. It marked the first time
Syracuse had held its opponent scoreless in the
opening contest of the season since a 34-0 win
against Wisconsin in the 1997 Kickoff Classic at
Giants Stadium, as well.

SERIES HISTORY
Syracuse and Colgate have met 66 times on the
gridiron. The Orange have only played Penn State
(73) and Pittsburgh (70) more times in football.
Colgate holds a slight edge in the all-time series,
owning a 31-30-5 overall record, but has not
defeated Syracuse since the 1950 campaign.
In their last meeting, running back Delone Carter
led Syracuse to a 42-7 victory against Colgate
inside the Carrier Dome on Sept. 25, 2010. Carter
finished the contest with 172 rushing yards on 14
carries. The Copley, Ohio native also ran for four
touchdowns, which ranks fourth in Orange singlegame history.

Syracuse continued its perfect season with

a 71-0 rout of Colgate on Nov. 14, 1959 at
Archbold Stadium. The team erupted for 45
points in the first half, which still stands as the
most points scored in a half in program history.
In addition, the club registered a school-record
six touchdown passes in the contest.

In his final game played in Syracuse, N.Y., running

back Jim Brown set a then-NCAA record with 43
points scored in a 61-7 victory against Colgate on
Nov. 17, 1956. Brown scored six touchdowns and
converted seven extra points. The future College
and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee also ran
for 197 yards.

Running back Ernie Davis led the squad with

88 rushing yards and one touchdown against
Colgate. Davis also hauled in one reception for
nine yards. The Elmira, N.Y. native ran for 686
yards and eight scores on the 1959 campaign.

Colgates early dominance in the series quickly

gave rise to the legend of the Hoodoo. The
Hoodoo legend was based on a story that
during the construction of Syracuses Archbold
Stadium a Colgate student snuck onto the
construction site and buried a varsity maroon C
sweater in the drying cement, cursing Syracuse to
failure against the Raiders.

Immediately following the game, Syracuse made

the announcement that it accepted an invitation
to play in the Cotton Bowl against the champion
of the Southwest Conference. The team would
go on to defeat Texas, 23-14, in Dallas, clinching
its only national championship title.

The Syracuse mens basketball team has played

Colgate 168 times in the history of the program,
its most frequent opponent. SU holds a 123-45
advantage in the all-time series, which dates back
to the 1901-02 season. The Orange have won
each of the last 50 meetings against the Raiders.

AGAINST FCS FOES

For the third consecutive season, the Orange open
the year against an FCS opponent. Syracuse is a
perfect 14-0 against FCS foes, formerly Division
I-AA, since the separation of major college
football programs into two divisions in 1978. This
streak also includes a 13-game win streak inside
the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome.
In total, the team has won its past 32 games
against current FCS members. This streak predates
the separation into two divisions. The programs
last loss to a current FCS team came on Oct. 4,
1958 at Holy Cross, a 14-13 setback.
Following the separation in 1978, Syracuses
first matchup against an FCS opponent was
interestingly enough in a bowl game. The Orange
were selected as an at-large opponent to play the
champion of the Southland Conference, unbeaten
McNeese State, in the 1979 Independence Bowl.
Behind 155 rushing yards from all-time leading
rusher Joe Morris, Syracuse cruised to a 31-7
victory.

EMPIRE STATE OF MIND

Syracuse owns a 71-78-11 (.478) overall record
against current FBS and FCS members located in
the state of New York.
The Orange have won each of their past nine
contests against opponents from the Empire
State. In its current streak against in-state foes,
Syracuse has outscored the opposition, 337-87.
The teams last loss against a program from New
York came against Army West Point in 1986.

WEEKDAY WARRIORS
Syracuse owns a 6-4 overall record in 10 weekday
games at the Carrier Dome and has won six of
the last eight non-weekend Dome clashes since
the start of 2011. Prior to 2011, SU had only
hosted two weekday Dome games (1989 vs. West
Virginia, 2007 vs. Washington). Both were losses.
Overall, the Orange hold a 9-2 mark in weekday
games dating back to their 36-34 win against
Kansas State in the 2010 Pinstripe Bowl, a game
that was played on Thursday, Dec. 30.
Louisville was the last team to beat the Orange on
a weekday, winning, 28-6, on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014.

OPPONENT CONNECTIONS
Syracuse assistant coach Nick Monroe coached
at Colgate from 2004-09. Monroe served as the
programs defensive coordinator in 2009.
Orange director of high school relations J.B.
Gerald was a standout receiver and kick returner
at Colgate from 2000-03. As a senior, he helped
lead the Raiders to the 2003 Division I-AA national
championship game.
Raiders assistant coach Siriki Diabate played at
Syracuse from 2011-12, serving as a team captain
in 2012. Following his playing career, Diabate was
a graduate assistant for the Orange from 2013-14.

ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

Head coach Dino Babers brought his high-octane
offensive scheme from Bowling Green to Syracuse
when he was named the Oranges head coach in
December.

In three of those four years, Babers unit ranked

in the top 10 nationally in total offense, including
in 2013 when his Eastern Illinois squad led all of
Division I (FBS and FCS) with 8,253 yards. The
only Division I program to average more yards per
game than the Panthers 589.5 in 2013 was Baylor
(618.8).

MAGIC NUMBERS
Head coach Dino Babers owns a perfect 30-0
overall record when leading after three quarters
of play. In addition, his teams hold a 31-3 overall
mark when holding a lead after the first half.

If history is any sort of barometer, Syracuse fans

will see an immediate jump in tempo. The Falcons
ran 1,136 offensive plays in 2015 (81.1 per game).
By comparison, the Orange totaled 751 offensive
snaps and averaged 62.6 plays per contest last
year.

Babers offenses have been known for putting up

outstanding numbers through the air, but also
having success on the ground. His teams own a
16-1 overall record when rushing for at least 200
yards. On the flip side, Babers holds a 2-3 overall
record when his teams do not run for at least 100
yards.

Bowling Green got off a play every 20.7 seconds of

possesion time, while SU averaged one play every
28.1 seconds. Meanwhile, the Oregon Ducks,
the perceived standard in up-tempo offense,
managed a snap every 21.4 seconds in 2015.

On the defensive side of the ball, Babers holds

a 16-0 overall record when his teams hold their
opponents to less than 20 points. In fact, his
squads own a 34-2 overall record when their
opponents score less than 40 points.

THE SYSTEM WORKS

CUPBOARD IS STOCKED

In four years as the head coach at Eastern Illinois

(2012-13) and Bowling Green (2014-15), Dino
Babers offenses have generated 27,620 total
yards. Thats the equivalent of 15.7 miles! Its also
more yards of offense than any ACC team has
gained during that span.

Syracuse returns its statistical leader in nearly

every major category except punting. The Orange
welcome back more than 90 percent of their
production in rushing (92.6), passing (100.0), punt
return yardage (100.0), kickoff return yardage
(100.0), scoring (94.9), total offense (96.2), allpurpose yardage (91.7) and field goals (100.0).

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR

Senior wide receiver and return specialist Brisly Estime was
named to the 2016 Paul Hornung Award Preseason Watch List.
The Paul Hornung Award is presented to the most versatile
player in the FBS. Estime is one of 43 players on the preseason
watch list, which also includes last years winner Christian
McCaffrey of Stanford.
A 2015 All-ACC Third Team selection, Estime finished second
nationally last season in punt return average (18.1) and tied for
second in the country with two punt returns for touchdowns. He
totaled 937 combined kick return yards (665 kickoff, 272 punt) in
2015, the 11th-best total in the FBS. Entering his senior season,
Estime ranks third at Syracuse in career punt return average
(16.9).
As a receiver, Estime caught 17 passes for 293 yards and two
touchdowns, and led the Orange in yards per reception (17.2).
His 89-yard touchdown catch against Wake Forest marked the
third-longest pass play in SU history and tied for the longest
completion in the ACC last season.

By comparison, Syracuse has never had a

quarterback record a 4,000-yard passing season.
Only one Orange quarterback has ever thrown for
3,000 yards. That was Ryan Nassib, who set the
SU single-season record with 3,749 yards in 2012.
Nassib also established the season record for
most touchdown passes (26) the same year.
While playing for Babers, Garoppolo (17) and
Bowling Green quarterbacks Matt Johnson (10)
and James Knapke (5) combined for 32 300-yard
passing games. Thats five more 300-yard games
than in the entire 126-year history of Syracuse
football (27).

YOUNG GUN
Sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey certainly
played well in the first eight games of his
collegiate career. Dungey was 105-of-176 passsing

Dungey made the first start of his career against
Wake Forest on Sept. 12, 2015. He was 8-for13 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns,
earning ACC and ECAC Rookie of the Week
honors. The Lake Oswego, Ore. product became
the sixth true freshman to start a game for the
Orange since freshmen became eligible in 1972.
In the first game of the 2015 campaign, Dungey
made his collegiate debut. He became the 10th
true freshman to take snaps at quarterback in
SU football history, completing 10-of-17 pass
attempts for 114 yards and two touchdowns
against Rhode Island on Sept. 4.
Dungey was one of only two players to notch
multiple rushing touchdowns against Florida State
in 2015. He ran for a pair of 1-yard scores against
the Seminoles on Oct. 31. Houstons Greg Ward Jr.
also had two touchdowns on the ground against
Florida State in the Peach Bowl.

CENTER OF ATTENTION

STRICKLAND EMERGES (CONT.)

Redshirt senior center Jason Emerich was named

to the 2016 Rimington Trophy Watch List, released
in July. The Rimington Trophy is presented to the
most outstanding center in FBS football. Emerich
is one of 62 centers on the watch list, including 11
from ACC schools.

Strickland is a threat outside of the backfield,

as well. The Dayton, N.J. native hauled in two
touchdown receptions in his first season on
campus in 2015. He caught touchdown passes
in consecutive games, scoring six points against
Central Michigan and LSU.

Emerich moved into the starting lineup in Week 3

last season against Central Michigan and started
the last 10 games. He recorded five knockdown
blocks and graded out the highest of any Orange
lineman in Syracuses matchup against LSU. He
also helped the Orange rush for 242 yards against
Clemson, the most rushing yards allowed by the
Tigers in 2015.

NICE FIRST IMPRESSION

Off the field, Emerich is the president of the

Syracuse University chapter of Uplifting Athletes,
which is a nonprofit organization made up of
a national network of chapters dedicated to
inspiring the rare disease community through the
power of sport. For his community service efforts,
Emerch also is a nominee for the Allstate AFCA
Good Works Team and on the preseason watch
list for the Wuerffel Trophy.

MAKING MOVES
Junior Ervin Philips made the transition to inside
wide receiver for the 2016 campaign after serving
as the Oranges primary hybrid back last season. It
marks the third time Philips has changed positions
at Syracuse. As a freshman in 2014, Philips was a
running back, rushing for 194 yards.
Philips led the team with eight total touchdowns
(3 rushing, 5 receiving) and was second on the
club with 48 points scored in 2015. He finished
second on the team in receptions (29) and third in
receiving yards (286), as well.
Philips prepped at West Haven High School in
Connecticut, where he rushed for a school-record
4,596 yards in his scholastic career. Only six miles
down the road, Syracuse legend Floyd Little
earned his stripes at James Hillhouse High School
in New Haven.

STRICKLAND EMERGES
After serving as one of the Orange hybrid backs in
2015, sophomore running back Dontae Strickland
has emerged as the clubs top running back.
Having lined up on the wing at South Brunswick
High School in New Jersey, it will mark the first
time he has played the traditional running back
role since his Pop Warner days.
As a freshman in 2015, Strickland picked up 81
yards on the ground and hauled in nine passes
for 137 yards. Strickland and classmate Jordan
Fredericks became the first SU true freshmen to
score rushing touchdowns in a season opener
since Damien Rhodes did so in the 2002 campaign
starter against BYU.

Sophomore running back Jordan Fredericks made

his name known in his first season on campus in
2015. Fredericks led the Orange with 607 rushing
yards on the year en route to 2015 College
Football News and CampusInsiders.com Freshman
All-America Honorable Mention accolades.
Fredericks was the first Syracuse true freshman
to lead the team in rushing since Delone Carter in
2006. His 607 yards on the ground rank third on
the schools freshman rushing record list behind
Carter (703) and Joe Morris (1,001 yards in 1978).
In his first game of his collegiate career, Fredericks
ran the ball 14 times for 103 yards and a
touchdown against Rhode Island on Sept. 4. He
became the first true freshman in school history
to run for 100 yards in a season opener.

OFFICER MAHONEY
After joining the Syracuse football team as a
walk-on from the College of DuPage in 2015,
junior quarterback Zack Mahoney was awarded a
scholarship prior to the start of the 2016 season.
Mahoney worked his way up from fifth-string
quarterback to make four starts for the Orange
last year.
Mahoney played in eight games for Syracuse in
2015, completing 54-of-117 passes for 535 yards
and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 151
yards on 41 carries and two scores.
The LaGrange Park, Ill. native made the first start
of his SU career against LSU on Sept. 26. Against
the Tigers, he became the third Orange signal
caller to throw three touchdown passes against a
top-10 opponent.

SLAYTON RECOGNIZED
Redshirt sophomore defense lineman Chris
Slayton was one of two Orange defensive players
to earn Preseason All-ACC accolades, joining
junior linebacker Zaire Franklin. The University
Park, Ill. native is coming off a rookie campaign
where he notched 22 tackles and 6.0 tackles
for loss en route to 2015 College Football News
and CampusInsiders.com Freshman All-America
Honorable Mention accolades.
Slayton played in all 12 games in his first season
on campus, starting five games. He started the
first four games of the 2015 campaign. His best
game of his collegiate career, to date, came at
Virginia on Oct. 17. He notched five tackles on
the day.

DEFENSIVE SPOTLIGHT

SLAYTON RECOGNIZED (CONT.)

BALL HAWK (CONT.)

After playing primarily as a defensive tackle last

year, Slayton is slated to start the 2016 season at
defensive end. Slayton played defensive end at
Crete Monee High School in Illinois, twice earning
all-state honors.

Winfield recorded 30 tackles, 2.0 sacks, three pass

breakups, one forced fumble, and tied for the
team lead with two interceptions in 2015. Against
Rhode Island in the season opener on Sept. 4, he
returned his first career interception 24 yards for
the games opening touchdown.

ALL OVER THE FIELD

Junior free safety Antwan Cordy looks to lead the
way for the Orange defensive backs in 2016 after
a strong second season. Last year, Cordy ranked
second on the club with 68 tackles and set a
program single-season record for most tackles for
loss by a defensive back (12.0).
Cordy got in on the scoring action at Virginia on
Oct. 17. The Homestead, Fla. native scooped up
a fumble and ran it back 44 yards for a score in
the second quarter. It marked his second fumble
recovery of his career. He tallied seven tackles
against the Cavaliers, as well.
Cordy has started each of the past 13 games for
the Orange, which is the second-longest streak on
the team. Junior linebacker Zaire Franklin leads
the club with 15 consecutive starts. In the season
finale in 2014, Cordy started at cornerback for the
injured Julian Whigham. He then started all 12
games at strong safety in 2015.

FRENCH CONNECTION
Junior linebacker Parris Bennett enters his
second season with the first unit in 2016. Bennett
started the first eight games last year at outside
linebacker, before being sidelined by an injury.
Despite only playing in eight games last season,
Bennett ranked third on the team in tackles. The
Detroit, Mich. native recorded 44 stops on the
year.
Bennett was one of two players to record at
least 10 tackles in a game last season. The junior
linebacker actually accomplished the feat twice.
Bennett notched 10 tackles against Central
Michigan on Sept. 19 before tallying a career-high
13 stops at Virginia on Oct. 17.

BALL HAWK
Redshirt junior cornerback Corey Winfield is the
teams most physically-gifted player. He began
his career at wide receiver before moving to the
defensive side of the ball in 2014. Winfield started
eight games in 2015, but missed the final four
contests due to injury.

The St. Louis, Mo. native sealed the Oranges

victory against Wake Forest on Sept. 12 with an
interception with 28 seconds left in the contest. In
the process, Winfield became the first SU player
to record an interception in consecutive games
since Durell Eskridge did so during the 2013
season.

GROZA CANDIDATE
Junior Cole Murphy has quickly established
himself as one of the nations top kickers. For the
second straight year, Murphy has been named to
the Lou Groza Award Watch List. Murphy was a
semifinalist for the Groza Award in 2014, which is
presented annually to the nations top kicker.
SU CAREER FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE
Name (Years)
Pct. (FG-FGA)
Patrick Shadle (2006-08).......................800 (40/50)
Ross Krautman (2010-13).....................778 (49/63)
Cole Murphy (2014-Present)............. .763 (29/38)
Last season, Murphy booted 16 field goals, which
ranked eighth in ACC and tied for fifth on the
Orange single-season record list. He has made 47
consecutive PATs, dating back to the 2014 season.
In addition, Murphy will handle kickoff duties for
the 2016 campaign.
In only two seasons on campus, Murphy has
already etched his name into the Syracuse record
books. He currently ranks ninth on the SU career
ledger for field goals made (29), third in careerfield goal percentage (.763, 29-38), and is tied for
10th in career field-goal attempts.

HOMECOMING FOR HART

When Dino Babers hired Mike Hart to be the
teams running backs coach in January it marked
a return home for one of the most decorated high
school athletes in the history of Central New York.

CHARTING THE DEFENSE

Junior linebacker Zaire Franklin enters his
second season as the man in the middle for
the Orange defense. After playing as an outside
linebacker as a freshman, Franklin made the
move to middle linebacker in 2015 and has not
looked back since.
As a sophomore last year, Franklin paced the
team in tackles with 81 stops on the season. In
addition, the linebacker ranked second on the
club with 11 tackles for loss. The Philadelphia,
Pa. native paced the Orange in tackles in four
games, including an 11-tackle effort against
Pittsburgh.
A proven leader on and off the field, Franklin
was the fourth sophomore in the history of the
program to be named a team captain in 2015.
Franklin joined Robert Adams (1894), College
Football Hall of Famer Joe Alexander (1918), and
Angelo Accocella (1945) as the only sophomores
to be named captain in Syracuse history.

yards in his scholastic career and set the national
high school record for career rushing touchdowns
(204). Hart played in the Dome several times
while suiting up for the Tigers, including winning
three straight state championship games (200204) in the buildings friendly confines.
After high school, Hart went on to become
Michigans all-time leading rusher and was a
two-time finalist for the Doak Walker Award,
presented to the nations top running back. He
played in 21 games for the Indianapolis Colts
before injuries cut short his pro career. Hart was
inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of
Fame in 2014.

RISING FAST

Give the Orange their 702nd victory in program

history. Syracuse currently is tied for 21st on
the FBS ledger of winningest programs (11
wins from 2004-06 were vacated by the NCAA).
Extend Syracuses winning streak against
Colgate to 16 games. The Oranges last loss to
the Raiders came in 1950.
Be the teams 10th consecutive victory against
current FBS and FCS foes from the state of New
York. Syracuses last loss against an in-state
opponent came against Army West Point in
1986.
Extend SUs streak to three straight seasonopening victories. The programs last loss in a
campaign starter was in 2013 against Penn
State.
Improve head coach Dino Babers overall record
to 3-2 in season-opening games. Babers has
lost each of his past two campaign starters
since winning his first two as the head coach at
Eastern Illinois.

One of the brightest, young offensive coaches

in the country, Sean Lewis is in his first year
as Syracuses co-offensive coordinator and
quarterbacks coach. He was named to the post in
January 2016 after he helped run one of the most
explosive offenses in college football under head
coach Dino Babers at Bowling Green.

TOUGH SLATE (CONT.)

Lewis coaching peers have taken note of his

success. Lewis was a nominee for the 2015 Frank
Broyles Award as the nations top assistant coach.
He was also selected for the first AFCA 30 Under
30 Leadership Institute.

Four of the Oranges opponents Notre Dame

(892), Virginia Tech (719), Pittsburgh (704) and
Clemson (703) have more than 700 wins in their
histories and rank among the top 20 FBS teams in
all-time victories.

For the fifth straight year, Syracuse traveled to

Fort Drum to learn from the men and women of
the U.S. Armys 10th Mountain Division.

According to ESPN.coms Brian Bennett, Lewis is

one of five Power-Five coordinators 30 years old
or younger. Rutgers offensive coordinator Drew
Mehringer is the youngest in the country at 28
years old.

TOUGH SLATE
Syracuse will face one of the toughest schedules
in the nation in 2016. ESPN.com rated this years
Orange itinerary the eighth-toughest in the land
and Phil Steele ranked it No. 10 nationally.
SUs 12 foes combined for a 93-64 (.592) overall
record last season. Nine of the teams 11 FBS
opponents played in bowl games, while Colgate
advanced to the quarterfinal round of the FCS
playoffs. Only USC (11), BYU (10), Colorado (10),
and Ole Miss (10) are playing more teams in 2016
that went to bowl games last year.

The day of community engagement and teambuilding was an extension of a partnership that
began in 2012 when the Orange first spent a
portion of preseason camp on post.
The team kicked off the day by holding a youth
football clinic. Orange players and staff led
the children through various drills aimed at
improving their fundamentals. After the clinic,
senior linebacker Eric Anthony and redshirt
junior quarterback Austin Wilson addressed the
participants.
From there, the Orange sat down for lunch with
the men and women of the 2nd Brigade Combat
Team and their commanding officers. Head coach
Dino Babers was presented with a ceremonial
jersey, commemorating the five-year anniversary
of the relationship between the Syracuse football
program and Fort Drum.
In the afternoon, a little rain didnt stop the
Orange from playing a series of informal paintball
games with the soldiers.

GAME 1 - SYRACUSE VS. COLGATE - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

THE LEGEND OF 44

OVERTIME HISTORY

HARRISON ENSHRINED

L ike tailbacks at USC, quarterbacks at Brigham

Young and linebackers at Penn State, the running
back position at Syracuse has a rich tradition of
greatness. Much of that greatness has revolved
around one jersey number No. 44.
n Nov. 12, 2005, the number was retired. It is the
O
only retired number in the history of the Syracuse
football program. A No. 44 jersey is displayed in the
Carrier Dome rafters, honoring the legends who
have worn it.
eginning with Gifford Zimmerman in 1921, 25
B
players have worn the number. Rob Konrad was the
last in 1998. Three of the most famous to don the
digits Jim Brown, Ernie Davis and Floyd Little
rank among the finest running backs to ever play
the game.
ow much does the No. 44 mean to Syracuse
H
University and the local community? For starters,
the University zip code was changed from 13210
to 13244 several years ago. And in 1988, when the
University changed phone systems, the exchange
was changed from 423 to 443. No. 44 not only has
come to represent greatness on the football field,
it has become a part of the Universitys and the
communitys identity.

number. Under very special circumstances, the
committee can permit a current student-athlete to
wear it.

Hall of Fame, Syracuses all-time leading receiver
Marvin Harrison earned the ultimate on-field
honor in August when he was inducted into
footballs most exclusive club.
Harrison added to Syracuses indelible legacy
in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Harrison, who
coincidentally wore No. 8 for the Orange, became
the programs eighth inductee. Only USC, Notre
Dame and Ohio State have more.

BROWN WINS TOP ALUMNI HONOR

Orange legend Jim Brown will be honored by the
Syracuse University Alumni Association with the
2016 Arents Award at a ceremony on Sept. 16.
The Arents Award is the highest alumni honor
bestowed by the University. Brown is being
recognized for excellence in athletics and social
activism.
A native of Manhasset, N.Y., Brown wore No. 44
for the Orange football team for three seasons
(1954-56) and is widely regarded as one of the
greatest athletes in history. He was a four-sport
star at Syracuse, playing football, lacrosse,
basketball and competing in track & field. Brown
earned first-team All-America honors in football
in 1956 and was presented with the NCAA Silver
Anniversary Award in 1982.
During his nine-year NFL career with the
Cleveland Browns, Brown led the league in
rushing eight times and was a Pro Bowl selection
every year. In 2002, he was named the Greatest
NFL Player by The Sporting News. Brown was
inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
1983 and the College Football Hall of Fame in
1995.
As a social activist, Brown supported AfricanAmerican causes by helping to create the Negro
Industrial Economic Union in the 1960s and
founded the Amer-I-Can program in the 1980s,
which strives to turn around the lives of young
gang members.

2016 ZUNIC AWARD WINNER

Three-time Orange football letterwinner Tom
Hermanowski 70 has been named the 2016
recipient of the Zunic Award. Hermanowski will be
honored on Friday, Sept. 16 during a dinner at the
Turning Stone Resort and Casino and recognized
on the field when Syracuse hosts USF Saturday,
Sept. 17 at the Carrier Dome.

2016 ZUNIC AWARD WINNER

Presented by the Syracuse Football Club, the
Zunic Award was created in 2001 to honor Mike
and Judy Zunic, who died tragically on July 18,
1989 when a United Airlines plane crashed in
Sioux City, Iowa. The pilot, anticipating landing
difficulties, requested if some strong passengers
would volunteer to give up their seats and sit at
the exit doors to assist passengers in the event of
an emergency. Mike and Judy gave up their seats
in first class to sit at one of the exit doors. They
both died in the crash and those in the Zunics
original seats survived.
Mike Zunic was a four-year starter at linebacker
and earned a bachelors degree (1981) and
masters degree (1982) in speech communication
from SU.
A leader in the fight against substance abuse,
Hermanowski is the executive director of ADAPT
Consultants, which provides comprehensive
alcohol and substance abuse education,
prevention and intervention programs for schoolage children in Southern New England. His work
has helped hundreds of kids to better understand
the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol.
Hermanowski was a defensive back for the
Orange from 1967-69. Syracuse posted a 19-11
record during his three seasons. As a sophomore
in 1967, Hermanowski intercepted one pass and
helped the Orange to an 8-2 record and the No.
12 ranking in the final United Press International
(UPI) poll.

SU, ARMY WEST POINT RENEW SERIES

Syracuse and Army West Point have agreed to a
future football series with four games scheduled
between 2023-26. The Orange will host the Black
Knights in the Carrier Dome on Sept. 23, 2023 and
Sept. 27, 2025. Syracuse travels to West Point for
games on Sept. 21, 2024 and Sept. 26, 2026.
Syracuse has a long gridiron history with Army
West Point, playing the Black Knights 21 times
since 1899. The Orange lead 11-10 in the series,
including a 4-1 mark in the last five meetings, and
a 3-0 record in games played in the Carrier Dome.
In the most recent pairing, SU emerged with a
42-17 triumph in a game that featured current SU
tight ends coach and 2000 West Point grad Reno
Ferri suiting up for the Black Knights.
