13% of High School students hinted that

Social Studies was important because of its
focus on citizenship education.

I feel as though not a lot of people can look at

social studies as a class that teaches on more
than just dates and numbers. One of if not the
most important parts of Social studies I its
ability t teach us how to be citizen. Showing
through things like world history that the world
is made up of hundreds of societies with their
own cultures and we should respect and
understand all of them.

#4

When students reflected upon their Social

Studies classes they were unable to recall
quickly significant learning experiences like
a field trip, simulation game or a class
discussion of a controversial issue.

#5

One interpretation might be that

elementary student find the study of
history and of other cultures to be

This was something that surprised me because

in my Social Study classes our number one
thing was the ability to have those discussions
and hear how our classmate interpreted
history, whether it be the same way or
differently. We always had really cool and
interactive history field trip jut so we could put
these dates to things like music at the
symphony, one of the field trips we went on.
I found his very much the case the case in my
high School. Everyone was always excited to
take classes like AP Psych and Sociology where

particularly interesting were secondary

students are more interested in the study
of human development.

they were always dreading taking AP World or

even just regular US government. And there
were very few that found enjoyment in the
analyzing of American history and things along
that nature.

Well, it got boring when you are

memorizing date after date, name after
name, president after president- that type
of thing. It got really tedious after a while.

This is the biggest complaint that I have had

with Social Study classes. People would
say it is a waste f time and energy when
e should be focused on math and writing
skills. But what people dont get I it is so
much more than that. History should be
see for the fact that it is the observation
of past events and how they have made
our world the way it is. So there might be
a lot of dates but without these events we
wouldnt have language or culture. All of
which are vital to our way of life.

Connections to previous MR: As a student Social studies was never my favorite. That was until 6th
grade when I saw for the first time to complexity of the world. Some people see history and social
studies as dates you need to remember. But I see it as more than that. I see it as a whole bunch of
puzzle pieces to make up the world we live in today. It is that complexity that makes it so interesting.
But it does not appeal to other students in that way. Often time its like pulling teeth for them to go. But
The study of history and other social study topic are important to our society. We need to get students
to become engaged in these topics to show them how important it is. To show them how to be citizen
and the world as a whole. That I why Social studies is so important.
