meanwhile things were going from bad to worse all over the
world and especially here in God's country. Sometimes I
began to think I had a duty to speak out, to warn other folks.
But my Ma didn't have any idiot children: I know when to
keep my mouth shut.
My final decUne and fall, as you might call it, was those

And that was the week that Nixon was on the television
from China, toasting Chairman Mao and calling Karl Marx "a
great philosopher," and I could see that we was really done
for. I suspect it was really Alger Hiss up there behind a rubber
Nbcon mask, but that doesn't make no never-mind. Why, if
the mask fell off, right on TV, it wouldn't make a difference
the way the moral fibers of the country are all shot to hell.
People would just say, "Well, maybe the way Mr. Hiss got to
be president was kinda funny, but by God now he is our president and we've got to support him." Makes no difference if
it was Joe Stahn or Adolph Hitler himself for that matter.
The godforsaken damned fools would just say, "He's our
president and we gotta support him." That's the shape the
country is in since all this pot and heroin and sex education
got into the schools.

of that. Doc HoUister was a lazy old coot to start with and

and keep it there, in the third place. And in the fourth place,
he was really pretty dumb in the first place.

One to attend a University of California symposium on how
to make the 21st century better than the 20th. The radio

doubtful whether there would be a 21st century.
The symposium was being held at the UC-Monterey

The future of intelligence looked as good to him as it
did to Hubbard.
He didn't get a standing ovation, but everybody was
hungry by then.
As we went out to lunch, I heard that somebody in
Pennsylvania had admitted, in front of TV cameras, that he
was afraid of a meltdown at Three Mile Island. It didn't scare
me, since I had been worried about that all along. I would
have been frightened if I thought nobody on the scene was
aware of that possibility.
Evidently, most of us ducked back to our hotel rooms
during lunchbreak to check out the Tube. When we got back
to the conference center, everybody had heard that people on
the scene at Three Mile Island were now admitting the possibihties of both meltdown and explosion. I put it in italics
because it seemed hke Terry Southern was writing the script.

rooms and listened to more contradictory and evasive statements about Three Mile Island on the Tube. Channel 9 from
San Francisco, a PubUc Broadcasting System station, found
one expert who delighted me. He was from California governor "Jerry" Brown's energy board, and he said he didn't
know what would happen at Three Mile Island. He said all the
other experts were just as confused as himself, but were tryit. I found his honesty refreshing.
That evening my wife Arlen and I had dinner with
Barbara Hubbard, Dr. Oyle, and the other speakers. Mostly
we talked about O'Leary's hope that Three Mile Island might
be the crisis that would turn our society away from the nukes
and toward space industry.

And, she added, there was more brain growth during that
transition than at any other period of evolution.
Lyn Burwell, a columnist from a local newspaper, Russian River Stump, said something that impressed me even
more. "The future exists first in Imagination," he said, "then

He took us then on a gentle, philosophical stroll through
the more baffling enigmas, paradoxes, and mysteries of quantum mechanics. If this is God's poem, he seemed to be implying, God is a very modernistic and recondite poet. But the

Quantum mechanics ceases to be mysterious, he continued, when we recognize that yes and no, space and time,
even matter itself, are all epiphenomena. What really exists,
he proposed, is "a series of acts of creation," from which
space, time, and matter emerge.
Things got a bit more concrete when Finkelstein went

The chemical revolution of the 19th century, Finkelwent on, allowed us to access 0.001 percent of the

Many passages in my novels were produced by the cutup method invented by William S. Burroughs and Brion
Gysin. I was sneaky about it; the cut-ups were inserted where
my characters were dreaming or on drugs, and I did not explicitly tell the reader that this prose was produced by mechanical techniques.
Scientists are allowed to experiment,
montage, and painters use collage, but we writers are still exmode is ordained by God or
too sacred to be breached. The exact reasons why literature
should remain stuck in the early 19th century while the rest
of our culture is moving rapidly toward the 21st are, to say
the least of it, obscure to me.
The cut-up method is both random and stochastic; it
disconnects linguistic tropisms and reconnects on a higher, or
more subtle, level of coherence. You take a page you've just
written and cut it into four quarters. Shuffle them and type

two pages and quarter each of them. Good. Now you have
eight pieces to shuffle. Take somebody else's prose or poetry

how the scientific Estabhshment treats them.
This interest was particularly concrete at this time because there was one part of the historical Novel that was
giving him trouble. His hero, Sigismundo Celine, had seen a
meteorite fall. Celine had dragged the Damned Thing, which
couldn't exist according to 18th-century science, to the Academy of Sciences in Paris. Naturally, he was roundly denounced and mocked for his troubles. This was accurate:
anybody who reported a meteorite to 1 8th-century scientists
was treated like a Close Encounterer of the Third Kind today.
The problem was in recreating the mental set of the scientists of 1780, those self-declared Men of Reason who were
so sure of their own enlightenment. Certainly they would not

Randi 's presentation consisted of saying five different

That seems to mean that they saw him bend metal, but the

Randi refuses to believe this, and continues to damn and

that Euclid's system was not the only possible one was

Most Pop Ecologists rejected solar power satellites vioand shrilly, with arguments that ranged from the superstitious (one quoted an American Indian legend that if a
"house" were put in the sky, the world would end) to the
moralistic-misanthropic ("I don't think humanity deserves to
survive," one wrote to Co-Evolution Quarterly) to the barely
plausible (technical problems in the original designs were
alleged, but those who hit on this objection did not suggest
better designs; they insisted the whole idea be abandoned).
Physicist J. Peter Vajk commented on this nearly universal
rejection of solar satellites by eco-puritans: "They seem to

one percent (0.00000025 %) of all available energy on the

ideology or philosophy, but simple inventory, and Dr. Fuller
insists that it can be demonstrated to anyone who will look

SILVIO GESELL
The only Utopian economist I ever liked was Silvio
Of course, Gesell was a businessman, not an academic
or an ideologue, so he had some common sense. In his ideal
society, there would be a one percent tax on money, to
accelerate circulation and to discourage hoarding. At the
beginning of each month, you would have to put a 1<? postagestamp-like sticker on each dollar you owned, but not on
productively invested funds. There would thus be a strong
incentive to either spend or invest everything you earned in
any month before the next month began, and Gesell thought
this would stimulate continuous economic growth without
inflation. There would be no other taxes, which would
allegedly keep government at a reasonable size; and this single
tax would never be painful, since you would have $100 of
unspent, uninvested money on hand for every $1 you owed

Are we talking about substitute sex for the crippled, the
malformed, the hopelessly ugly or neurotic? Only in the first
generation of such technology. Brain-wave and other biofeedback studies lead inevitably into the concept of cybernetic
sex robots programmed to scan neural signals from the human
partner and provide exactly, precisely, exquisitely what is
desired in every second of sexual union. In fact, reports from
Masters and Johnson indicate that their crude and precybernetic (brainless) ACE model (artificial coital equipment) produced no frustration in the women who tried it. Eventually
such mechanized substitutes can be programmed for an effect
"better than the real thing," as William S. Burroughs fantasized in his Sixties science fiction novel The Soft Machine.
